In this very diverse and dynamic world of ours, there are many cultures.
I'm curious about people's takes on culture.
More specifically - Culture shock
Have you ever traveled to a place and been blown away by the diverse cultures?

Even in small communities, what are some subtle differences you've noticed?

in subtle level, all is same with a connection derived out of the same origin of its basic essence !

I generally don't have "culture shock" so much as culture awe. I am fascinated by other cultures, and like experiencing them.
That said, there are some things that I can't, or won't tolerate ("cultures" where hatred is rewarded, and some foods
). But again I'm not "shocked" just repulsed a little. -
I have lived on the west coast most of my life, however I did live in Columbus, Ga for a while. It was in fact a total turn around from what I was used to. 'I' actually became the minority. But only enough to make me make a mental note of it and go on with my life, lol. Meaning, it didn't affect me or bother me in any way. But it was a big town and there WERE other whites. It's just that the ratio was waaay off.
Now, I live in a small town where but for a few now and then, everyone is white. I have had more than one such rare person come into where I work and complain that there aren't enough of them there.
To me, this at first seemed like self perpetuated discrimination, but at the same time, you could tell that they were really feeling alone. I guess having a PREFERENCE for your own culture is not exactly the same as discriminating towards others.
I told one that he needed to 'open his mind and broaden his horizons'. I couldn't beleive it was ME telling HIM that, lol. And I also realize that part of what he was feeling was homesick, as he had been traveling all around, originating in Nigeria. Also I had seen with my own eyes the vibe and treatment that he got from the other locals in my town.
I can only sum it up to people's ignorance and fear of the unknown. But he also had the opportunity to let people get to know him and he didn't. He was too discouraged I guess.
