Genius or what? I actually think he's better than either Bob Dylan or Johnny Cash. He's brilliant. The American bard.

His song "the river" is incredible... I'm just listening to him at the moment, and blimey! deep stuff.

"nothing man" is also effin' brilliant.
  2. aningeniousname
He is good but Billy Bragg is a better lyricist.
    1. daniel23
Billy Bragg can be kind of crude lyrically. I mean, I like his stuff. "Between the wars" is a great song.

I love Bruce - actually his new album is pretty good.

The River is one of my favorites as well. I sing that too myself in the car quite frequently - at least the last verse

"...but I remember us drivin' in my brother's car - her body tan and wet down at the resorvoir...."

I also love Thunder Road - there's a live version of that on a box-set they released about a decade or so ago that is to die for.

"The screen door slams....Mary's dress sways.....like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays...."
    1. MadameX
Okay, off to find whatever comp CD it has that has both of those songs on it...
  4. kdawg68
Some overlooked Bruce songs I love:

    -Badlands
-Atlantic City (so huanting - the background vocals)
    -Brilliant Disguise

These never get the credit they deserve.
    1. daniel23
Atlantic City is good. His version of "This Land is Your Own" was cool as well.

I have been really getting into his stuff lately.
  6. MadameX
That's my favorite Springsteen song, too, though I have a soft spot for Hungry Heart. And Rosalita. And...
  7. kdawg68
So who else sings "The River" to themselves? And do you get all crazy at the "At night on them banks I'd like awake, and pull her close just to feel each breath she'd take" part?

I can't stop - I'm singing at my desk now and folks think I'm mad.

"Now those memories come back to haunt me....they haunt me like a curse. Is it a dream of life that don't come true? Or is it something worse...."
    1. daniel23
I only ever sing Madness songs.

I know a guy who beat Springsteen out for a Grammy when he was nominated for The River, and his comment was, "I'm not sure what that was about."
    3. kdawg68
Who beat him out for the grammy? That's a good Trivia question.
    4. MadameX
Yeah, but the answer always upsets people...
    5. kdawg68
Edit: After looking up 1979 Grammy winners, I have to ask if you either know Kenny Loggins or Michael "Yah Mo Be There" McDonald?

Bob Dylan and Billy Joel are other possibilities it seems.
    6. MadameX
Wrong year, Kdawg. The River came out in 1980, but there's a lag, and it's not on a calendar year. The song was nominated for the Grammies that took place in February of 1982.
    7. kdawg68
John Cougar Melancamp? I give up!!!
    8. MadameX
Dude, didn't you ever read my profile page?

On a similar note, though, Mellencamp did win an American Music Award the next year over Paul McCartney.
    9. kdawg68
oh crap - I had read that before and it just never clicked. He won a grammy? How????

I can't lie - my wife loves Rick Springfield.
    10. MadameX
Well, I take issue with the question in general, but I would agree to the slightly extended, "He won a Grammy FOR JESSIE'S GIRL? How???"

He was nominated for another Grammy the next year, and won an American Music Award as well.

And had four platinum albums and 17 top forty songs.

And was named the top guitarist in Australia two years in a row and the top songwriter once. And represented Australia at the World Music Festival.

I like Springsteen too. But I liked him more when he was younger and wore tight pants
    1. MadameX
I liked him more when he was younger and didn't wear hair gel.
    2. Anok
      LOL, so true, so true....
  9. offendedblogger
    Uh, Springsteen SUCKS.

    Ugh.

    Awful!!!

    You have no taste.
    1. kdawg68
not all of us can be "Flock of Seagulls" fans, Chelle.
    2. Donlewis
Good God! Idaho...Insulting....potentially deranged....scary in a sailor suit...AND excellent music taste!

      Pant Pant

You're right of course. Springstein sucks. Always has and always will. I've seen him in concert twice. Fortunately there were good drugs available.
    3. offendedblogger
      Pffft.. Flock of Seagulls.

Try listening to something real like, oh, I dunno, Allison Krauss.

      Now THAT is a singer.

      She sings like an angel.
    4. daniel23
No taste. Tut tut. You like Johnny Cash tho I hope?
  10. cooper
I have never liked Bruce Springstein at all.
Only that I'm on Fire Song - it's pretty hot.
  11. DrowseyMonkey
Springstein always sounds like he's yelling when he sings. And I can't understand Dillan. Not a fan of Cash either...ah well. Just to top it off I always thought the Beatles were over-rated too. LOL Sorry!
    1. daniel23
I hate the Beatles with a passion.
    2. Hippychikky
you hate the beatles? who hates the beatles? WT lkajhsgdohiaughsfgluhaip
    3. Hippychikky
You cant understand dylan? The guy is a poetic genius. I will admit the harmonica can get piercing from time to time but it is his thing.
    4. daniel23
the Beatles suck bollox! John Lennon should be shot. Oh, wait...
    5. DrowseyMonkey
I grew up in the 70s...the Beatles are only thought of as amazing now because all the baby boomers like to remember their youth like it was something romantic.

Bob Dylan may be a good writer but he can't sing.
    6. Hippychikky
drowsey i am gonna take you down. He can't sing? Oh that is it, its on like don juan baby

I dont like the beatles for the oh they are such hotties factor cause they be ugly. I love their music. Great songs great meanings.
    7. DrowseyMonkey
LOL ... well, I don't like his voice...to whiney. As for the Beatles, I can't think of one song of theirs I can tolerate. I always preferred the Stones
  12. gerryPlanetEarth
I like many other people on this planet have been moved by the music of Bruce Springsteen and his E street band...

Bruce Springsteen's tremendous musical and vocal talents are greatly enhanced by the music of the E Street Band just as Frank Sinatra's greatest songs had the accompaniement of Count Basie and his Orchestra...
  13. Hippychikky
Better than bob dylan or johnny cash....OMG

    Are you on something?

That is like saying justin timberlake is better than jerry garcia
    1. daniel23
"Sunday Morning Coming Down" by Johnny Cash beats anything Springsteen has done. That's for sure. But still, on average...
    2. DrowseyMonkey
      Didn't Chris Christopherson write that?
  14. Hippychikky
Ok for shits and giggles i just purchased this river song on itunes give me a few mins......i am a music junkie so always willing to give things a chance....

BUT bob dylan, no way, no how, never
    1. kdawg68
You have to be able to take harmonicas. I love them personally.

Edit: I should probably read before posting. Okay, I see you like Dylan. I like them both. I thought you were saying you could never like Dylan, in which case I don't think the river would be up your alley.

LOL@ shits and giggles - one of my favorite expressions.
    2. Hippychikky
yeah that is true, my oldest loves bob but a few songs she plugs her ears during the harmonica solo's.

He is the most I have ever paid for concert tickets. 2 years ago my hubby and I went. Freaking memory beyond memories. I love him.
  15. Hippychikky
Yeah i guess i will listen to this song a few more times but so far i am pissed i just wasted 99cents
    1. kdawg68
