I imagine Bush would be a great catch for a presidential library, because he will be a controversial lightning rod for generations, and therefore a good draw for SMU. -

Nah. SMU is too good a school to seriously suffer for long. It's also known as the school for all the privileged, spoiled kids in the DFW area, and I doubt they'll be ideologically opposed. And as long as the football program is fine, the SMU alums will be, too. The Bush Library will bring in historians and scholars from both sides of the debate because people feel so passionately about him.
