Not only do dogs smile, but they laugh as well. To us, a dog laugh sounds like a deep exacerbated pant. But it's a laugh.

I don't know about smiling but they can certainly look up.
    1. sisterofmercy
Oh can they? Can they really?
I've always wondered if dogs can look up properly.
As for smiling I'd like to think so, they look like they are in summer when they get hot and stick their heads out of the car window.

  11. Ori
yes they smile, I remember my dogs did smile, and their eyes are sparkling when they're smiling
  12. dosox
    Yea they can...
  13. sunnyberra
Yes. Matter of fact, when we were hand-rearing puppies, they were so used to 'seeing our teeth' that when another dog snarled at them, they would keep going toward them. At the time, we thought they were...just less than smart, but then we realized they thought seeing teeth was always friendly, even in other dogs, because we had smiled so often at them
That's why, now, every time we pet one of them or give them attention they grin at us

i don't think we can see their faces laugh or smile. For me, if the dogs waggle their tails, it means they are happy. But it really depends cause sometimes, they waggle because of anger.

Oh, for heaven's sake! They might be able to smile, yes, because that's a function of having a mouth and mouth muscles. But does it necessarily mean what we mean when we smile? Of course not! How could it?
  16. satijournal
Sure, dogs smile. Our dog smiles when she wants to play. They have emotions just like people. They get sad, happy, mad, lonely, excited...
  17. footiam
I know it can wag its tail!
  18. insomia
    it can smile..trust me!

My dog used to have an expression when he was surprised, like when he saw his first snowfall or when I presented him with a frog.
he would form his lips into a perfect circle and say with an almost human voice "woof?"
  20. ernestlobo
Well, dogs not only smile, they sleepwalk too :O

You could make them smile the way they used to make Mr Ed "talk" by putting peanut butter on their gums or for the more budget concious among us an electric cattle prod will give you pretty much the same effect at a quarter of the cost.

Some mammals and primates openly show both rows of teeth in a sign of non-aggression or friendliness. Snarls, on the other hand, are usually displayed with a closed mouth or snout, and might only bare the canines or the upper row of teeth.

So, yes, dogs do 'smile', just not in all manners that we define the term.
  23. aspotofblog
Perhaps dogs seem to smile because that is what we attribute to them.
