Hey guys! I just read Oprah's favorite OB/Gyn's latest book "The Secret Pleasures of Menopause" and wrote a review for her.

The book is all about maximizing your nitric oxide levels (the chemical that Viagra became infamous for as Viagra inhibits an enzyme called phosophodiesterase, and that in turn causes the release of nitric oxide which allows blood vessels to dilate...use your imagination from there)

So, do you really think menopause can be a pleasurable time? Yes/no/why?

This book publishing company I am working with is looking at the review today so if you have time to drop a comment on the review I would really appreciate it...and will do anything for you in exchange (well not ANYTHING...freaks!)

Thanks so much!

man, that is a weird question lol! I can't imagine it is, unless one is doing things to get pleasure to distract from it.

Yeah that is the point of the book. lol

I am glad you are enjoying it!

I did menopause already. I did it without HRT and it wasn't that bad.

My doctor tells me the reason I didn't suffer the "classic" symptoms of menopause is because I am fat and fat tissue actually creates oestrogen. So, even though my ovaries shut down their oestrogen factories, all my generous little fat cells were giving me just enough low dosages of it that I never suffered from mood swings or hot flashes. I get night sweats but that's because I live in a hot climate...turning on the A/C fixes that!

So, maybe our natural proclivity for gaining weight in the middle years is just Mother Nature adding the fat pad that will sustain us through menopause. I know it certainly helped me!

okay, that explains the weight despite not stuffing my face with fast food, sweeties and desserts, arg!
    2. DocNicole
Praise the fat pad! lol..no but that is 100% true that adipose tissue peripherally converts hormones thanks to enzyme activity.

Glad the HRT helped you, it isn't the answer for everyone, especially those with family histories of breast cancer.

I didn't use HRT. I probably would have if I'd had symptoms that were interfering with living my life, but it just wasn't that bad!

Fascinating! Maybe I'm thin? I'm about 5-10 lbs heavier than thin. I haven't hit menopause yet, have been 5 yrs wrestling with perimenopause.

My mother had NO symptoms at menopause and she's at least 100 lbs overweight, so that bears out your experience. Thnx so much for the info!

It was miserable. The Crotchety Old Lady set new standards in crotchetiness.
I wasn't allowed to have the heat on for the whole winter. I wore sweaters and sweat shirts to bed.

Oh gosh you should have ditched her for Martha Stewart a long time ago! lol

Well you can still buy her this book as a thoughtful gift. I am sure that will get you a nice smack in the face

Shoot Joe, my wife is only 31, and she already keeps the heat off in the winter, and will not allow me to put my electric blanket on the bed. I am SCREWED when she hits menopause

All I can attest to is that pre-menopause (with fibroids) is the worst kind of physical hell I've ever experienced. I can only HOPE that it gets better from here!
  6. thinkinfyou
You've got to be joking right?
  7. pattiannstafford
Pre-menopause here. It has to get better right? Headaches, body aches, hot flashes, night sweats, flu symptoms, heavy bleeding--basically feel like I'm constantly ran over by a Mack truck.

And I've recently developed an allergy to rayon. Yep, feminine products are full of rayon. Where does that leave me now? Hoping I can find an abundance of 100% cotton products that only costs an arm and not an arm and a leg.

Why can't Mother Nature just shut the switch off already? When I see her----she's gonna get slapped..LOL.

I get crotchety now, am dreading menopause big time.

I am in pre-menopause and I am not crazy about the symptoms (so far), PLUS
'Aunt Flo' still makes her monthly visit so no relief there either! I mean, come on--aunt flo AND hot flashes? It just doesn't seem fair!

It has to be better than these damn migraines although I'm not rushing it or anything.

    @DocNicole
It's a roller coaster ride from hell and I want off.
I've been on this hell ride for 12 years - arrggghhh!

Meet the seven dwarfs of menopause
itchy, bitchy, sweaty, bloaty, sleepy, forgetful and psycho

P.S. I'm doing this drug free.
    1. Ecolux
Sublingual natural hormones save me. Call Dr. Nancy DeJesus in Delray Beach, FL. She can help those of you suffering as she did me!
    2. SweetViolet
Are you thin? Fat tissue creates its own oestrogen (see my comment and Doc Nicole's reply above) which really minimized my symptoms. I also did it drug free.

I'm not saying I didn't have symptoms, only that they weren't particularly bad. I rather liked going around without a coat in the dead of winter for several years, but I'm not too chuffed about that Forgetful dwarf...he can just go back home any time now!

JFC...it is great to be a guy!!!!

We DO have it made in the shade compared to women...exceot for that multiple orgasm thing y'all got going on.
    1. mtyler77
There has to be *some* benefits, right? Hee hee!
    2. RTBjr73
you ain't kidding there. My wife gets a visit from Aunt Flo, and all I will ever have to do is go to the store for her...big deal.

No, God is a woman...for she knew that man could not handle the pain and discomfort of many things in life, but knew a woman could.

Not so pleasant with breast cancer risk after hormonal replacement therapy

      @roentarre
Ahhhh dang! I'm so sorry to hear that. Take good care and best wishes for a speedy transition and recovery.

Should you really start this thread out saying "hey guys"
  15. Ecolux
Oops, sorry, doc, didn't realize the thread was posted by a naturopath until after I posted about my doc in Florida.
