I just finished a post on my blog entitled: "The Nietzsche Philosophy: Become a Superman to Protect yourself Against Swine Flu" which you can read here: www.knowledgereform.com/2009/09/12/the-nietzsche-philosophy-become-a-superm...

I was just wondering what ways can we protect ourselves against the dreaded Swine flu?

I don't want to be vaccinated or wear one of those silly masks...or is this supposed virus just scaremongering by the media?

If people think that a mask can offer protection, why not an oversized moustache?

well the moustache will not cover your nostrills.. reason no. 1,
  2. SweetViolet
Sterilizing it every night...it will collect those germs and hold them, you know...could be a rather painful experience.

As writings says, it won't cover your nostrils and if you grow it long enough to keep germs from entering via your mouth, it could make eating difficult.

I suspect the vaccine is probably the most convenient...and effective...option available.
    1. humanbeing1940
      What about all that mercury?

And I'm not talking about Freddie...although he did have a nice moustache.
    2. SweetViolet
Are you referring to the preservative used in the vaccine?

If you think that flu is deadly enough to be concerned about,
I hardly think the minute amounts of mercury in the preservative contained in a one-time injection is a reasonable concern.

When the shot is available here in South Africa, I'll be getting one. Better safe than sorry.
    3. humanbeing1940
Good luck! I'm sticking to growing my moustache as soon as possible - so many other benefits come with having one.
  3. lostrose160
    stay home ...blogging
    you wont catch the virus
  4. Rainhat
    lol
Well, your moustache would have to be dense enough to filter out bacteria.
    1. SweetViolet
Even if it was...imagine sterilizing the thing? Owwwww!
    2. Rainhat
A big splash of alcohol in your face. Could be fun, depending on the kind of alcohol.

And to be completely safe, you'd have to grow an impressive bush in your nostrils too. Sterilizing that might be a bit more painful... Ever get tequila up your nose by coughing after you take a shot? Burns like a mofo!
  5. crpitt
I will get the shot and grow a moustache.
    1. Agit8r
      that's very bold
    2. humanbeing1940
Why not try the moustache first - see if that works, then there would be no need to become a guinea pig (guinea PIG?? excuse the pun) and inject something more nastier than the virus itself.

Can you imagine if we all grew moustaches instead of taking the vaccine, we would put all the pharmaceutical companies out of business.

The only business that would be laughing would be the barbers.
    3. humanbeing1940
LOL Very fetching tash there, crpitt, if I must say so myself
    4. crpitt
That is not far off what I would look like with a tash:

I've been trying to grow a mustache for years but I just can't seem to do it. It must be all of the estrogen.
    1. Rainhat
You could start using steroids. I've heard that it has some interesting effects on your body.
    2. legbamel
I've always wanted an "interesting" body. This whole curvy thing is getting old.
    3. Rainhat
Yeah, psshaw, that's like so common.
    4. humanbeing1940
Mostly down to genetics. I got plenty to spare so I can lend you some hair if you want.
    5. legbamel
Plenty of what, facial hair? [Pictures opening an envelope full of mustache bits.] Eeeek! No, thanks. I'll just get some from hubby.
    6. humanbeing1940
LOL Fair enough. Don't say I didn't offer.
  7. FaithfulinPrayer
If some states have their way, you may not have a choice about getting the vaccine. Some states are passing a law to enforce vaccines and quartantines.
    1. Agit8r
      that darned 10th Amendment!
  8. Agit8r
I work at a university. If we catch "flu-like-symptoms" we are required to be out of work for a week, so we are all paranoid til we can get the shot
    1. nothingprofound
A young college student in my town just succumbed yesterday to swine flu. Now the whole city is in a panic.
  9. Deray28
How can a recombinant protein be nastier than the virus itself?

As SV said, you seem very worried about dying from the flu but not enough to get a vaccine?

A mustache is great place to retain bacteria and viruses, no, ethanol is not enough to sterilize it, it only disinfects.

The best you can do to not catch the flu is wash your hands, constantly, and avoid human contact. It shouldn't be hard.
    1. SweetViolet
Yah, I was not thinking alcohol but good old fashioned autoclaving...
  10. timethief
Do you have some kind of fear about being vaccinated? I ask because it sounds like you are grasping for straws.
Early Data Show H1N1 Vaccine Is Highly Effective
A new study in the Sept. 10 edition of Science makes the case for widespread and speedy immunization, suggesting that doing so could stifle the pandemic. The team found that by first vaccinating children, then adults, until 70% of the U.S. population is covered, officials would be able to all but stop the pandemic.

Guys, don't get me wrong. This post was mostly in jest so let's not get too serious here.

If and when the family and I need to be vaccinated then we have the choice (or maybe not) to do so.

I'm certainly not losing any sleep about catching swine flu not to mention being killed by it - we are all mortal after all.

Just want to lighten the atmosphere for anyone who may have some anxiety about it.

For the record people: I'm no docter so don't listen to my suggestions about growing a moustache. It's up to you to make an informed choice about what you feel will protect you, be it a face mask, vaccine, or a Tom Selleck look.

I think only crpitt knew that I was joking...I guess, something to do with the old Scouse sense of humor - and believe me, there are plenty of Scousers (a person from Liverpool) with a moustache
    1. legbamel
With my response, you think I was taking you seriously?! I presumed that you must have been kidding, because I refuse to believe that anyone would really think that human hair of any sort makes a good biological filter.
    2. Deray28
Nothing that people believe nowadays surprises me so, I did believe humanbeing was being serious, my bad! :-P
    3. humanbeing1940
      @legbamel
Yeah, I don't think your husband would be too happy if you asked him for his body hair to stick onto your face as a moustache...worth a try though

      @Deray28
It's okay, my friend. Not to say I believe everything that the scientists and doctors tell us about the safety of taking the vaccine as well as the side affects it may cause.

But then again it's up to the individual to make a wise and informed decision on what is good for them, so please no more lectures on the matter - I'll leave it to you girls to argue over the subject.

I just want to be left alone to grow my moustache in peace - I'm up for the lead role in the new 'Magnum' movie released next year.
    4. Deray28
"I'm up for the lead role in the new 'Magnum' movie released next year"

That is a much better reason to grow your mustache jajajajaja

Best way, imo, to preempt swine flu is to maintain a vibrant immune system through healthy eating and exercise. One can also carry orgonite to protect against toxins and/or metals (which depress the immune system) in the atmosphere. A zapper also helps to clear the system of sundry parasites.
    1. Rainhat
What exactly is this orgonite that you speak of? I've seen you mention it in other threads too.
    2. harveyavatar
Orgonite is a mixture of resin, quartz crystals and metal shavings. Orgone was a term coined by a student of Freud - Wilhelm Reich.

      From www.orgoniteinfo.com
In the 1930's and 1940's, Dr. Wilhelm Reich was able to detect and measure the existence of etheric energy (life energy, chi, etc.), which he called orgone, using a modified geiger counter.

"Dr. Reich determined that stacking alternating layers of fiberglass (an organic substance) and steel wool (an inorganic substance) would actually attract and collect orgone/etheric energy of both the life-beneficial positive form (which Reich called "OR" or "POR") and harmful negative etheric energy ("deadly orgone" or "DOR")."

    3. HollytheHousewife
So what your saying is it repels germs?
    4. Rainhat
I see. The science behind its functionality is certainly... um... interesting...
    5. harveyavatar
      @HH,
No, it repels microscopic metal particules (eg barium or aluminium) which would depress the immune system.

Typical effects which have been observed my many individual users of orgonite:

      # Purifies the atmosphere, detoxifies water, ends drought.
      # Helps plants grow better, repel pests & require less water.
      # Mitigates harmful effects of EMF radiation.
      # Disarms and repels predatory forms of life.
      # Inspires a pleasant demeanor and balanced, happier moods.
      # Frequently remedies insomnia and chronic nightmares.

      @RainHat,
Reich spent years of his life studying ether/orgone scientifically. A good part of his work was only released last year - per his will. There are heaps of hard scientific analysis of the question, if that is the angle that interests you. Personnaly, I haven't read much of that yet, I was more interested in carrying out my own experiments (on plant growth, ice cubes, electromagnetic devices, people...). Imo, it is something that must be experienced first hand...
    6. Rainhat
      @Harvey

Well, if it works, I'm all for it. But some of the explanations and claims on that website seemed a bit peculiar. Some of the quick facts the page mentions:

      # Purifies the atmosphere, detoxifies water, ends drought.
      # Helps plants grow better, repel pests & require less water.
      # Mitigates harmful effects of EMF radiation.
      # Disarms and repels predatory forms of life.

I guess this would be completely up to how they define "purify" and "detoxify". I find it hard to believe that this substance would somehow make carbon monoxide and mercury just disappear out of air and water. And ends drought? How? If there's no water, pointing a cloudbuster at the sky is unlikely to make it appear out of nowhere. It repels predatory forms of life? Well, who decides which life forms are predatory? From one point of view, humans are predators, since we kill and eat other animals. Is it going to repel us too then? Even if this worked, it would not necessarily be a good thing. How would it affect the local eco system if all the predators suddenly ran off?

Maybe this website isn't the best one to represent the topic, I don't know, but it just seems a bit sensational with phrasings along the lines of "It makes all the bad stuff go away!"
Well, what is bad, and according to who? It makes it a bit hard to take it seriously.
    7. Agit8r
      holy gigantic pic Batman!
    8. SweetViolet
I have just spent an hour on Google trying to find one...just ONE...article on orgonite published in a peer-reviewed journal. Nada.

Harvey, if you can provide me with a link to just one peer-reviewed scientific journal on this substance, I would appreciate it. All I can find is junk science, speculation, and specious, unsupported claims.

Absent bonafide research and reporting in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, I cannot view this as anything other than an egregious hoax aimed at the gullible and/or desperate.
    9. Rainhat
Nice picture. Adding width="400" to the code next time will make it less humongous.

I looked around for more information too, and the only thing I could find was a wikipedia entry. Obviously, that's not the most reliable source, but it mentions that Einstein once participated in an experiment with Reich, and found no evidence of orgonite doing anything. The article also says that no one outside the group of Reich's students have ever found any evidence of it working.
    10. harveyavatar
      @Rainhat,

You are right in saying Wikipedia is not always the most reliable source... I have definitely noticed this for anything that has to do with occult power.

As I said before, this is something that must be experimented with... nothing can be taken at face value, including what I say...

The swine flu is a very serious problem. As this article discusses, it's likely to infect a lot of people. healthlifeandstuff.com/2009/09/the-winter-and-swine-flu-how-bad-is-it/

In addition to growing a mustache, the best idea is to keep away from people if infected. While I am very concerned about the lack of research into the safety of the vaccine, getting it may be a good idea. On the other hand, it may come to market too late.
  14. kab625
I agree. I think the vaccine is going to be late. It has already peaked in some countries, and on US college campuses it looks the same - great testing ground for how easiy it infects also. Yes, be prudent like with any flu, and wash your moustache faithfully....er hands. By the way, search "dung of the devil" on google. It kills swine flu in lab dishes at least - ancient chinese plant root remedy.
  15. therealanon
I'm not sure how to protect myself, but I will NOT take the vaccine. They haven't even done trials on it, yet they are soon to disperse it to the public. I believe the vaccine will cause far more harm than swine flu, which I think might have been man-created. Might be a way to cull the population. Think about it.

Baxter, the company who is developing the swine flu virus, has had prolems in the past with tainted vaccines. fightingforliberty.ning.com/profiles/blogs/baxter-vaccines-tainted-with
    1. LaurenM622
they actually HAVE done trials that are so far extremely successful - the completed trials in the US are currently looking like the vaccine they've made is more like the chicken pox vaccine than the traditional flu vaccine. one shot and the immunity generally lasts as opposed to a yearly vaccine.

i plan on getting the vaccine, since i'm on chemotherapy AND attending college classes. in addition, i carry hand sanitizer and wipes with me everywhere. my doctor's best advice after the vaccine is to constantly wash your hands.

Dr. James R. Shannon, former director of the National institute of health declared, "the only safe vaccine is one that is never used."
    1. SweetViolet
Um, that is true of everything...the only safe car is one that is never used...the only safe lawnmower is one that is never used...the only safe kitchen knife is one that is never used...

Virtually EVERYTHING in life comes with risks. So, what puts you at greater risk...getting the vaccine or not? If it is taking out people in the prime of their lives...like college students and other young adults...then my take is that the greater risk is in NOT having the vaccine.

As far as Baxter having had a problem in the past with tainted vaccines, (and having worked in the biotech industry so I am not ignorant of these corporations and how they operate) it is most likely that the previous problems have been thoroughly researched, the cause(s) identified and rectified.

Due to my age and certain medical conditions, both my husband and I are likely to have a less-than-optimal outcome should we catch this flu. When the vaccine comes to South Africa, we'll be first in line to get it.
