the hardest job is getting the visitors, get your blog advertised where people will see it, depending on the nature of your blog, get it into magazines and local papers, online get free ezine ads about your subject, just get people reading it or it is dead in the water -

The word money Blogging has been mis-used
a lot of time but it exists very strongly 
Search for your self the decide yourself what you should do to earn from your blog . Few hints
- Sponsored reviews
- PPC Advertising
- Selling ad space to advertisers

honestly ive tried a bit of everything and i make no more than couple of bucks so far. Adsense, payperpost, others like adbrite etc. Pay per post looks better for now. But i wouldnt know. Im still green in the blogging thing.

If you are in a niche field you can make money on advertising. There are people out there making 15K-30K a month. It just depends on your topic. If you are trying to make money off a personal/hobby blog I wouldn't hold my breath. Blogging is a ton of work just like running any other small business. If you are looking for a quick way to make money then I would look somewhere else. But if you are passionate about a topic, write well, are good with social networking, and are in it for the long haul then yes, blogging can be a career just like anything else. I would find something you love to talk about and then go after paid reviews.
You have to prove your site is popular, you will do better if you prepare a media kit and solicit your own advertisers. In the begining you might ask them to "sponsor" your blog instead, especially if your goal is to donate money to a charity. You will need 50k-100k page views per month at least depending on your niche.
I wouldn't expect to make any money blogging professionally for at least 12 months. If you are really good, a great writer, and spend 24/7 on the internet you could do it in 6 months.
So yes, like everyone else above here has said...don't quit your day job. However, blogging is a ton of fun and a great way to meet some of the smartest experts in the field that you could ever be lucky enough to be friends with.
Working while starting a blog is tough and takes a great deal of dedication. Many of my weekends are spent blogging, writing, and networking, but because I am in a niche field I am doing this with the understanding that someday far from now it will pay off very well.

in my bit of experience, yea money can be made. How much money? well that will depend on your dedication, your theme, and of course your writing skills. You can sell out and make paid posts for others or you can do the advert run which is a bit harder. I try not to monetize my blog, unless i need the cash for the blog itself. So far all the money I have made from my blog (which isnt much) has gone to the blog itself. Anything extra I would just make a contest or something to get rid of.-
