How many of you can play musical instruments? How many and which ones?
I can play the piano and have also provided the notations in my blog-

Even if you don't know how to play or don't have a musical instrument, you can still play. I have written how to do it in my post.

I play belly dance music on the balalaika
It is a very stimulating experience, we first eat baklava and get very excited from too much sugar. Then the dancers slip into clothes and show off their pierced belly buttons. Then my eyes roll back, I face East and then break out into a tune which uses a flat 3 a flat sharp 7 and a flat 9.
I smile. -

if the question was "can you play a musical instrument well" I'd skip answering but as it's written... yes I can play piano...badly. I was a lefthanded student in a righthanded world, I'm lucky I can play as well as I do.
which really isn't that well but... my music teachers always said I had enthusiasm-
Thanks Achyut
Here's the logic behind it.
Music is about feelings, what happens is people try and play things that are a little above their level and they struggle. When you are struggling to do something in music, the mind is overactive and the whole focus is on trying to do something technical and not musical. There are times to focus on technique and there are times to focus on music with feeling. It is important that people take time out to be musical and play at a comfortable level. I see it as essential to explore and experience the emotive side of music. It is easier to make beautiful music when you are relaxed, taking time to listen to the subtleties of the notes as they sound. Lots of people don't really listen that well, they are trying to play faster, more complex, trying to impress other musicians; this is not music, I'm not sure what you would call it - maybe it's just sound or resonance but I'm hesitant to put it into the music category.
Good musicians take time out to develop various elements of music such has harmony, improvisation, chord substitution etc and gradually incorporate their new achievements into pieces of music, they sort of just become a part of the musical toolbox.
I often work on different material by lots of different players of various styles because other players come up with finger movements and musical possibilities that I wouldn't dream of. Then I gradually infuse a few, not all, of the things over a period of time, and they eventually become a part of my natural expression.
It takes a long time to slow down and play music. The role of any music teacher is to get the music student to play music as soon as possible, to develop an emotional relationship with music as soon as possible. However, everyone is in a hurry, and although it is great to have high level skills that are available when needed, it is absolutely essential to build firm musical foundations that are based completely in music.
Most of the great players I know play in a relaxed manner and many people would miss the nuances of their music which has grown over many years, they may play just one or two notes or chords like someone else does but it's just not the same, there's incredible life and history oozing out.
I watched a friend of mine play some old blues stuff at a gig the other week. A lot of guitar players wouldn't look twice, but I just sat there intrigued by the way he played what looked the simplest things but while he was singing his fingers were playing perfect fills and half chords. What struck me was the way he didn't even notice he was doing, he wasn't thinking, it just played by itself.
KEEP MUSIC MUSICAL

I used to play the cello when I was younger, but it was too hard so I gave up.
I intend to pick it up again soon. I've also been singing since I was 8 and am in a high church choir and currently preparing for my Grade 6 exam. -
I used to play piano, saxaphone, oboe, and (for a short time) the trombone. Floormodel, I'm a lefty, too. Have you tried ragtime? My span isn't really big enough for the chords, but it definitely gave my left hand more to do.

Mom taught me to read piano sheet music and use the correct fingering, but I never took lessons or learned timing. I can fake it if it's a song I already know...my daughter can play her armpit. She's very talented!

I 'try' and play the guitar. My Brother developed a guitar tuition device for Google Android phone which helps a great deal - check out SplashPlay.mobi.
I also play the didgeridoo, and Jew's harp.
I am currently learning Mongolian throat singing. I would love to hook with anybody in the Birmingham, UK area who shares these same passions for throat singing and playing weird and wonderful musical instruments. -

times or style?
I play jazz, blues, Indian music, bluegrass, country, funk, some rock... I can scream on a guitar but it really hurts my head these days. Irish music, open-tunings, folk, and variations of all the above. When I play some stuff I think more like a piano player than a guitar player. This comes from my jazz training with Ike Isaacs, one of Stephane Grapelli's guitarists.

I have a hard time understanding someone who uses the term wasted in connection with music but oh well . . . . I learned to play piano by listening to my mother's piano teacher - My parents didn't care about giving me lessons. That was over 60 years ago - I still play - took some lessons but mostly play by ear and recently played for 30 minutes at my niece's wedding. Music is what keeps me going!!!

I can't play dead. My husband and all of his friends are musicians. I have found a niche as a professional fan.

Been playing the violin since I was four years old.
Mostly I'm a fiddle player. I own about seven fiddles some very old some new.
I just bought an electric and its a totally new sound for me. i love it.
Now a question. Do you know thew difference between a fiddle and a violin?
If it has ever had beer spilled on it, then its a fiddle.

Haha sweet. Only saw one other trombonist in this discussion! Go trombones!
Yeah I play bass trombone for my high school. Junior and senior.
And i've played the piano for 4 years, but stopped two years ago.
Then there's that dreaded year where i took the guitar and my parents didn't want to sign me up next year cause i didn't practice enough
I regret that cause I would give up anything to play the guitar now. -

I played the clarinet, bass clarinet, tuba and piano. Also performed in marching bands and other competitions. Growing up in a small town, it was sports and music. Everyone in our family, and there were 5 of us kids, we all played an instrument or one sort or another. Unfortunatley, I haven't played much in recent years. But it has given me an appreciation for others talents.
