Can you really make money online?

This is a real question and I am not looking for spam, scams, or shams but, can you really make a living doing something (e.g. blogging) online?
Thanks in advance for the input.

I'm wondering about AdSense. A feminist blog in Britain I ran across had a Google ad offering dates with Asian women. Never mind what you might personally think of such an ad, it completely contradicted the purpose of her blog. But Google's machines somehow thought they were related. Feminism --> Women --> Matchmaking Service. ;0 Presumably Google offers some control, but that ad in that context made me wonder how much.

Just heard back from the owner of that site. She says she can't choose ads, that Google does it based on key words. She was able to put a block on the site advertising though. Now I'm wondering how many times one would have to go through this process before stuff like that won't slip through any more.

Apologies, I meant to post back and say thanks for the tips and information! My wife and I just purchased a Bed and Breakfast in the Caribbean and I was curious to discover some alternative means to help us meet the monthly mortgage payment.

Sure, you can. But you have to really work at it. You'll have to commit to doing on-line money making as a full-time job, if you want to make a living at it. Don't get sucked in by the Cinderella stories of people who work an hour a day and rake in thousands a week. Those are few and far between.
There's no guarantee of any income at all. You'll have to pay taxes on your own (no withholding) and pay for your own insurance, which means that you'll have to make a lot more than you would working for someone else. And you could get taken in by scams and waste your valuable time. But if you're careful and hard-working you can pay the rent and maybe save a little cash. -
You very much can, and you don't have do it as your full time job... just to have fun

If you want to learn how to monetize your blog, you need to learn how to build a huge traffic following and make your blog search engine friendly. Then optimal ad placement. And target your content for certain keywords that'll get the highest paying keywords relating to your ads. IMHO, WordPress is the best blog software for all of this.

I've been teaching IT for about seven years now, Flash animation, installing web servers, and all sorts of odds and ends. About 3 months ago I went to a couple of seminars and a number of people I met were doing very well, in facT it's embarrasing to say how much these people are earning because most people wouldn't believe it. Most of the people that I met that are making money are not IT people, this was a shock for me, especially when I'd been teaching stuff like perl, actionscript and things they had no idea existed. So i decided to explore the online marketing thing a little more. The bottom line is that I keep hearing, (and it sounds corny) but you've got to get your head right to allow yourself to make money, otherwise it's going to go straight out again, regardless how much you earn. The most sensible guy that I've encountered that has his head and heart in the right place is an Australian guy called Paul Blackburn ...Beyond Succes. A lot of the people I've come across are just after a quick buck and are getting it, and i feel pretty aweful after dealing with some of these people. There are a lot of people talking it on blogs but I honestly feel a lot of them are just spouting off what they have heard about other people doing it. good luck

Our main income from the net comes from selling templates, affiliate products and adsense.
swishit.com
over the past 4 years we average between $25,000 to $30,000 a year
our other sites bring in some other $ as well
We book real time weddings, ad space and internet orders.
With some work, you can bring in some $, I guess with the blog explosion you probably could do well for yourself if you find the right market to deal with. -
I think whatever it is it's all about numbers, you might have the best site in the world but unless it gets visitors your not going to make money. I've made good money playing online poker. I'd like to make money with my blogs but I am still learning how to get more visitors, without those you won't get sales or clicks. I read a little while ago on aol that one blog just hit $1,000 per day just from adsense, I decided I had to check his site out, it was a scuba diving site, his average click was between 10c and $1 but it was purely down to the fact that he had a few thousands regular subscribers.
I'm thinking of starting a news blog, watching the news this morning there were some good stories I could have submitted to the feeds which would have got quite a few views, and if you had related ads by google or yahoo probably would end up with quite a few click-thru's.
