Let's say everything else would stay the same as in your current career (time for family, hobbies etc, salary could go no lower than what it is now, you would not have to move, old job waiting for you in a year)

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR NEW CAREER TO BE?

I think I'd like to make a documentary about something. Maybe gasoline, maybe the first amendment, maybe the child-actor syndrome.

Other than being unemployed for a year & making the same money, I can't think of anything. It's taken me a while to get to this job, so ... I don't think I'd change it. But a year off with pay would be cool!
  3. robertstevenson
It's funny for me. I have four months off each year, but I miss being productive after about a month. I hope to get over that feeling soon.
    1. DrowseyMonkey
4 months off each year! I'm so envious. I don't get any paid holidays.

In certain countries, you hear about orphanages full of babies who are never held or interacted with, who go on to develop heinous psychological illnesses. I have always wanted to work for an orphanage and care for babies.
    1. robertstevenson
I hope for their sakes that you get that chance.

      what a rewarding position!
  5. DVS
    Porn star.
    1. robertstevenson
      Hey, what's stopping you?
  6. DVS
    Im camera shy.
    1. DrowseyMonkey
You'd probably make good money. Shy guys in porn, that's gotta be a niche market.

Hmmm....giving some thought to this one...

I sit behind a computer and operate on several different planes, so I think I would have to go somewhere that isn't so technoligically involved (hmmm...morgue's?), but I'd love to be a professional student (surely I can get paid for it, right?). I love to debate the scholars on BC, but I haven't the knowledge to keep up, yet.
    1. robertstevenson
Many scholars don't listen to the answers. They are too busy being impressed with their questions. just kidding if my colleagues are reading this. (seriously, if they're not)
    2. wolfcreek
I'm aware of that...and that's why I take great joy in trying to debunk their positions.
  8. DVS
Guess I could wear a mask or something...Batman porn? Could work.
  9. robertstevenson
@DVS Sounds like you might be on to something (or someone)
  10. DVS
Mayhap I should copyright forthwith or risk loosing my intellectual property!

I would love to fundraise for non profit organizations and empower those who are vulnerable. I would advocate for those who don't have a voice
    1. robertstevenson
Any particular causes more than others?
    2. lordiwanttobewhole
mental illness is my passion, so anything in that area would fire me up!
  12. Anniepooh
No thanks--on call 24/7 whether I feel like it or not and doing the job of 10 others is tiring. I don't want to spend that much time doing anything else.

If we can change it to a simple 8 hours a day, then maybe something like teaching cooking classes would be cool.
    1. robertstevenson
Maybe that'll happen for you someday. What do you think?
    2. Anniepooh
I did it for a short while. I owned my own business teaching people to cook in their own homes. It was FUN, but not very lucrative. I couldn't afford advertising. I may try to go back to it, if I can find the time now.
  13. ThriftShopRomantic
I would love to spend it writing a novel-- or possibly renovating the humor-sci-fi one I'd written a few years ago. That would be terrific!
    1. robertstevenson
I hope you get that time, TSR. Then I want a signed copy.
    2. ThriftShopRomantic
      Thanks, Robert.

I spend my days sitting on my couch. I'd be willing to sit on a different couch for a year.
    1. wolfcreek
Just roll to the other side.
    2. robertstevenson
      That's classic . . . Thanks for the laugh.
    3. sdk1988

    4. earthlingorgeous
      LOL this is too funny!
  15. BlueSunshine
Lead singer of a successful metal band. That would dominate.
    1. robertstevenson
I was also thinking of doing a Rockumentary, so if you do land that dream job, let me know. I might just apply for a sabbatical.
  16. nardeeisms
Jazz singer....still may do it - Nards
    1. robertstevenson
I'm hep to that jive scene.
  17. momscrazylife

    1. earthlingorgeous

    1. robertstevenson
Have you done anything like that?
    2. sdk1988
I have not - but certainly would like to!
  19. Theresa111
    Writing, Communications and Broadcasting.
    1. robertstevenson
How different is that from what you do now?
  20. aningeniousname
For me it would have to be archaeologist or historian, apart from being filthy it's my passion.
    1. robertstevenson
I can dig that. Sorry 'bout that.
Have you been on any digs?
  21. leafsoup
    Can't decide...
    -Start a community garden, or
    -Create quilt designs, or
    -Photography, or
-Teach art or practical science to second-graders, or
-Work (and hike) in a fantastic national park like Yellowstone, or Yosemite, or Crater Lake...
    1. robertstevenson
This year's edition of "What Color is your Parachute," states that the average person will have eight different careers, so maybe you can do them all.
  22. Nomadic
Tricky question. I am guessing it has to be very different from what I currently do? Is that the point? I guess I wouldn't mind being UN Secretary General for a year.
    1. robertstevenson
Dipolomacy seems right up your alley. I'd vote for you; it's time for Annan to take a breather.
    2. Nomadic
      Or even Ban Ki Moon?
    3. Nomadic
Just a coincidence? I think BKM is stalking me after this comment....http://publicsphere.worldbank.org/quest-peace
    4. robertstevenson
Well, I was giving Ban Ki a hard time during our recent game of raquetball for not telling me he'd been elected UN sec. gen. I sent him by to say hi to you.
    5. Nomadic
Yeah - he is very modest, old Banksi. I think I MAY have changed my mind about changing my career for a day though.....am I allowed to do that? Having worked very hard ALL my life and being a single parent entirely responsible for 3 kids, I would like to be a pampered house wife, with money to burn, and do F all just for a day.
  23. TimMc
I don't really want to change what I'm doing. My job/business is great. I was able to take my family and travel for 11 months (June 2006 to May 2007) throughout the US while still being able to draw in a decent, full time income. It's awesome. I work a lot at times, but I also (most days) have the ability to go fishing, golfing, or goofing around if the mood suits me. I just work later that day or longer the next day. Not too shabby, huh?
    1. robertstevenson
What is it that you do?
    2. TimMc
I own my own writing, editing, and proofreading company.

I have several different companies that I create, manage, and revise content for on the web. I also have two other companies that I work with to produce their newsletters, magazine articles, and other marketing materials.

      It's a blast!
    3. robertstevenson
That's right I remember being impressed when I read about you in the Grammar Group.
    4. TimMc
      Aww, shucks...
  24. cooper
I'm still in grad school and will be for a couple of years, but I just switched from working for an international organization working on policy, to working for a state organization working on policy for women, so I think I'm right where I need to be. I doubt I'll ever have one job for years on end though so I hope not to have to wish to hard to be where I hope to always be there.
    1. robertstevenson
Sounds like you're positioning yourself precisely to do what makes you happy and in something that makes a positive difference. Well done.
  25. wehireu
Everything would stay the same except my salary could go much higher for a year. Hmm, could I become a philanthropist and take a portion of their income for a year.
    1. robertstevenson
Sure go ahead. And when you become a philanthropist don't forget about the poor struggling professors out there.
