We have been hard at work the last two months getting all geared up for blogworld this weekend. One of our goals was to have a brand spanking new homepage to show when we got there and we just barely made the deadline. (we leave for vegas in the morning) so without further ado please check out our new homepage and let us know what you think!

And I still think the blog deserves a better link than the one it has now from a tiny font in the lower right-hand corner.

While it's unlikely that the community blog will ever get a MAIN nav link pointing to it, there are plans to integrate it into related interior pages of the site (directory pages for example).
Give us some time while we roll out more of the updated pages, you should get a better idea of how it will tie into other major parts of the site over the next month or two.

I like it, up to the point where it lists virtually the entire recent BC blog post without formatting. Would a summary or the first paragraph of the 2 or 3 most recent posts be a better use of the space? (You'd draw a more diverse readership that way.)
As for the layout and categories, I think you've done a great job so far! -
I like it. I'm with Mark though on the blog. I think we should have a link for the blog in the top menu bar.

Another quick observation... The discription section that tells people what they can do should have the icons linked to the places where they can do them.
It 'feels' like I ought to be able to click the "Join the Discussion" icon and see discussions, or click the "Get The Latest News" icon and be reading the lastest news... -
New B.C Home Page looks very good. I remember that when I had visited B.C for the 1st time, It looked as if it was just a directory of blogs. But after a few months I discovered it to be a fantastic community of bloggers as well.
I think new home page clearly shows all the features of BlogCatalog very nicely.
Thegoodknife, keep up your good job and thank you very much for all the efforts and hard work you people do for providing us the best community of bloggers from all around the world. -

The front page should be a gateway whenever possible, IMO.
Since there is a Discussion forum and a Tools page, it makes sense to link to those when you can. [The Join the Discussion button is a lot more prominent than the smaller link to 'view all discussions'. So, it might be more likely to draw a click.]
I will say that I like the Blog category toolbar in gray along the midline of the page -- especially since you can scroll sideways to see so many categories. That's a nice addition.
I wonder about the color of the smaller links above the searchbox, though. Could it be that, since you've chosen a lower-contrast color, the links you *have* put in are so subtle that they risk escaping notice?
Overall, though, I think the design is really well-done. -
Yes, yes, and yes. They should be a way for visitors to get to the particular feature about which that section talks, even if it's just a landing page with links to the more specific pages/listings/sections. If they're interested enough by your description to want to click, for heaven's sake give them something to click!

Hmmm... looks cool... but... the top section is unnecessarily large in scale. It takes up too much of the vertical space... it really does, actually, I've never seen anything so unnecessarily large in proportion...
-
That can actually be a good thing stylistically if you want to accentuate just a few links for new visitors. Google.com comes to mind. I never use the front page of BC to get in so the changes won't affect me much.

But google.com is all there on one page. With this one, you have to scroll down to reach the content, so you can't really compare the two.

Another thought....
Downsize the header section so that the what you can do stuff comes further up the page. Bloggers tend to have lots of toolbars, so you want to bring the action closer to the top.
Maybe reducing whitespace some in both top/bottom padding of both the top nav bar and the header area.
