A conversation between my daughter and her friend got me thinking (and writing) about childhood memories. I think that as parents we often look for spectacular moments and big events that our children will remember forever, but that in reality it's often the little day-to-day things that stick with them.

I know that one of my fondest childhood memories is of waking up early on Saturday mornings to the sound of a lawnmower outside my window and the smell of fresh cut grass.

What's your experience? Does childhood nostalgia mean recalling a glorious trip to Paris or mom cooking pancakes while you sat at the table in your pajamas?

A visit from my great grandmother and her sister, when they were in their late 70s will always be a fond memory. I like old people and loved their stories of life before the turn of the 20th century on an Iowa farm...and how Aunt Kittie was considered a real rebel because she had never married and actually had a career (teaching). Fascinating old women. I am proud to be related.

When I lived in Rome as a kid, on Sundays my grandpa would take my brother and I for a walk to buy roasted chestnuts from the street vendors.

Visiting my cousins in Korea. We would go swimming everyday, buy little treats at a local mart and ride bikes home. It was such a great summer.

I have fond memories for both big things and the little things. I guess my mom did a really good job at making everything a little bit special.

Some of my fondest memories, though, are playing dress up on rainy days, playing at my great grandmother's apartment, The smell of my Great grandmother's perfume and washes dishes with her, Christmas morning (BEFORE opening the presents) decorating for the holidays, and the smell of the asphalt at our family's traditional vacation spot.

Summer vacations with my Mom in the Catskills, and one very special one, when my dad who always stayed behind to work, came along.
