More than 50 countries rank higher than the U.S. in the realm of civil liberties, according to "THE ECONOMIST" magazine

What could we do better?

Obama did wrong and apologized. What I can't get over is how hung up people are on this one special Olympics gaffe. America faces huge economic challenges and business as usual will NOT cure the problems. The huge economic problem affects almost every other nation on earth. So is this fixation on the gaffe an avoidance mechanism or what?

America could do so many things better.
For one, educating the police on what civil rights people actually have would be a great start. Too many police have little understanding of the laws they enforce, and so they enforce them incorrectly.-
Oh you mean like when the Bush administration ordered the wire tapping of journalists seen as unfriendly to the administration?
I know this is off the subject of civil liberties, but I saw the outing of Valerie Plame by agents of Dick Cheney (Scooter Libby) as a blatantly illegal act that should have been an impeachable offense.

It's not just about civil rights and the police, it's about the invasion of government with legislation such as the Patriot Act which allows warrant-less wire-tapping, circumvents the judiciary branch and subjugates basic civil rights such as Habeus Corpus.

If you think Extreme Rendition can't happen to U.S. citizens, just ask Jose Padilla (aka the Dirty Bomber)

Impeachment of Cheney? How about prison? And let's not stop there. Does anyone think all that crap happened without Bush's knowledge? Talk about naive!!

I know in the case of my demographic, civil rights do not exist except in 6 states. In other states we usually encounter the following:
1. We are denied the right to raise our children.
2. We are denied the right to correct identity on our documents.
3. We are beaten and raped while law enforcement often is not interested in the fact.
4. When incarcerated we are typically given the harshest sentences and are forced to use our birth names, even if legally changed.
5. Since Littleton vs. Prague, our marriages have been summarily voided.
6. We have no recourse in discrimination cases.
7. We are murdered, often without the crime being prosecuted.
8. We are denied shelter or medical treatment if homeless.
9. We are forced out of housing without recourse.
10. We are terminated from employment without recourse.
11. We are forced into sex work.
12. We are harassed by authorities and have faced expulsion from communities and entire states.
This is common for those of us who are transgender, intersexed, or transsexual. While there have been advances on this front, we still have light years to go.
But even so, this demographic is probably not even considered in this ranking because we don't have recognition among all world peoples that we even exist. Statistics more often than not are lumped into the numbers for gays and lesbians, even though we aren't accepted as a gay phenomenon at all by gays or lesbians. -

Just propaganda, US is no more or less democratic than European Countries: all are hypocrit democracies
The purpose of the medias are to publish these kind of articles to divide people between continents, each thinking having the best system of course. -
