Topics: bloggers unite
If you are committed to Bloggers Unite For Human Rights tomorrow, please list your blog here to this discussion ... even if you have posted elsewhere.
CNN has asked me for a list of blogs that will absolutely be covering it.
I need about ten blogs. If you can add yours in the next hour, I will consider your blog for this list. Please remember that you have to be committed to posting by early tomorrow morning. Thank you for your help!

What does "Unite For Human Rights" mean? Exactly who is doing the uniting? What kind of "uniting" are we talking about? Is this going to be some sort of deliberative unification? I mean, are we going to be listened to or is this just another attempt to gather the masses? If we do unite, who is going to be making the decisions and how are they going to be made?

It really does no good and perhaps even hurts the causes for which you are uniting for if you really don't have a cyber-structure to carry it through.
Sure, it makes every one feel good to roar out their souls every now and then on issues they care about, but we need to do more than listen to our own echos.
We need to really use the Internet to unite like it has never been done before, like it has never been possible before.

MadameX,
In my case, I pointing out the:- Deplorable conditions in Darfur (and Sudan)
- The habit that some regimes have of killing offensive journalists
Worse, according to his logic, some petty tyrant will read what I've said about the Impunity Index: and as a result go out and make a journalist disappear.
I think his assertion is debatable, at best.
Although apathy is, I understand, regarded as a virtue in some circles.

I'll be posting my blog up tonight, probably in the wee hours, barring some unforeseen catastrophic event preventing me from doing so.

MadameX
How do you think it can "hurt the causes for which you are uniting"?
Well, after we all post our blogs and listen to the echos, we will all feel like we have actually accomplished something meaningful; when, in fact, we haven't actually accomplished anything at all except fool ourselves into even more complacency.

hum! speak for yourself!
Apart from the fact that many have taken time to address the issue, we have no idea if the bloggers are complacent about this issue (maybe some are and some are not) or if the readers are. We also don't know what they are doing in their private time to address human rights concerns.
I don't see how drawing attention to issues some might not be aware of, or some were not sure how to help with is a bad thing. -
David, I see your point, but I disagree that drawing something to the attention of more people can be "harmful". At worst, it accomplishes nothing, but that seems unlikely, given the ripples that every little action sends out (even if we aren't always aware of them)
Recently, I had the opportunity to hear Paul Rusesabagina (the manager of the "Hotel Rwanda") speak. His closing remark was that the single most important thing we could do was just TELL PEOPLE. He said that nothing changed until there was widespread awareness, and if everyone in the room went out and just told people about what was going on, it would make a difference. This campaign seems to me a very effective way to do that.
-

"Ok David, that sounds reasonable.
How would you approach it?"
How, indeed! That's the rub. We have this wonderful communicative tool called the Internet that can finally do away with time and distance...so how do we use it to unite?
Perhaps -- and this is just a thought -- perhaps we can involve the UN in a cyber presence to publish these efforts to their members, and ask for their response?

ravenscawl,
No doubt our echos will be clear and our souls cleansed, but human suffering and abuse will continue long after all the echos have faded away.
By the way, what is your assurance?

"No doubt our echos will be clear and our souls cleansed, but human suffering and abuse will continue long after all the echos have faded away."
One should remember the abused and suffering, One must- remember those who cause it! For without that action nones soul can truly be cleansed. -
I think I see the logic:
'What I do won't solve the issue, once and for all, in one stroke.
Therefore, I should do nothing.'
I believe I understand, but I don't agree.
Poverty and oppression will be around until human nature is revised.
That won't stop me from doing a little bit to at least point toward possible solutions, no matter how far from omnipotence I am.
-
-
Ravenscawl,
Yes, I am sure you are right. Still...we should be able to do more than just remember now that we have the Internet at our disposal.

Rich,
"If you visit the link I provided, you can see many actions go well beyond the Internet as would coverage on CNN. I understand what you are saying, but every Bloggers Unite campaign has had calls to action that go beyond the Internet."
Yes, Rich, I am sure you are right, and I have visited your link. And I am not suggesting for a moment that those who want to write their blogs on why they are against human suffering should do so. It just seems like if we put our minds together, we could apply this new tool in a better way, a more effective way. After all, don't the Chinese have the Internet as well? I was just trying to jump-start some thoughts along these lines -- thoughts I have been having about the Internet and its deliberative processes or lack thereof.
Perhaps CNN can get a few of these blogs, translate them and ask the Chines to print them in their main blogs. In return, CNN would reciprocate, and translate and publish their bloggers' responses to us.
ex animo
davidfarrar-
Yes the Chinese do have the internet but don't have access to sites such as this - the internet is strictly controlled in China. I take the point about presenting united front and yes it would be ideal - however one voice can make a huge difference and I would urge everyone to give vent to their own individual thoughts on this important day.

Good, Rich...try reading this one: For the Record, Rich,
I have re-read your link at "Bloggers United" and all I really see is you. Did I miss CNN's request for blog submissions? Or is this just a gratuitous attempt on your part to promote your own web-hits?
Usually, legitimate websites make it a point to tell the public "Who they are". I see no such endeavors on "Blogger' Unite" web page. In fact, the only coporate sponsor I see is you.
Why don't you help us clear this up before even more people waste their time pandering to your advertising platform.
Frankly, using peoples' natural heart-felt feelings for human suffering and human rights as a gimmick to advertise your website is despicable in the extreme.

"Bloggers Unite is an initiative designed to harness the power of the blogosphere to make the world a better place. By challenging bloggers to blog about a particular social cause on a single day, a single voice can be joined with thousands of others to help make a real positive difference; from raising awareness for cancer, to an effort to better education systems or support 3rd world countries." unite.blogcatalog.com/
Corporate sponsors include Copywrite inc, Amnesty international, and Blog World. CNN is a news organization not a sponsor. I will speak no more of this since I think you're just here for the attention. -
DavidFarrar, I know that you're either relatively new here or haven't participated much, but the BC efforts to use blogging to make the world a better, safer, kinder place are not new, and Rich has invested a lot of effort in that cause from the very beginning. I don't think that anyone who has been a regular participant here and knows the players has any concern about the motivation or the people involved.
I think it's shameful that you would jump into the middle of a charitable effort without bothering to gather information and attempt to cast doubt on it. Maybe you've succeeded...maybe you dissuaded someone from participating, and that person was the one whose blog would have been seen by someone who would have gone out and adopted a child or funded a program or engineered getting clean water to a village...the ripples go on forever. Fortunately for you, you'll never know how many people you might have killed with your reckless pride and hostility.

I DO hope that Mr.FARR's question of advertising is wrong. But even if Rich
is piggy-backing his blog off our commitment to our own truths then we might
just succeed better than the "corporate clip" from our good works. The ONLY
thing that is asked in ..."opportunity" is that we,the blogging 'CALM-UNITY'
RECRUIT A BILLION PEOPLE,(those not blogging yet ALSO!), to sit 'UP' and let the WORLD know that WHAT IS HAPPENING IS WRONG! And that there are, at least,
2.5 BILLION SETS of EYES paying attention. That's 25 billion fingers at key-
board, at checkbook,ETC.-
Yes, MonhandasLighque,
I hope I am wrong as well. But when just one person starts asking the blogasphere to recruit a billion people, you had better start asking, for whom and for what purpose.
As bloggers we all should know by now that every blog should be assumed to be fraudulent and untrustworthy until proven otherwise, and that the key function of offering a "web-link" is to establish their credentials.
As far as Rich's website is concerned -- does this guy even have a last name? -- all I see is Rich hawking his site by using these kinds of bottom-feeding tactics.

"I say we all just start hitting the report button."
Better if we just ping "Google" all at once! -
I, too, have just returned from "Copyright,Ink and pose this to Rich.WHO have you affiliated with on this beautiful effort? HOW do you plan to implement the combined efforts of every SINCERE writer? WHY have we NOT seen CNN's advertising of this event?
I'm still here until the bell rings for the final round, but I don't want
the community to suffer in its future due to a possible 'Corporate' gaffing.
This may have killed any chance I may have had,but a 'BLOGGER' takes the chance every time we touch a keyboard. -
I think it is premature to "report" anybody over this issue. After all, we simply could be misreading his blog...a common enough occurrence. Now if he was asking for money ...I assume he hasn't...things would be different. For now, all he has asked us to do is write our thoughts down and hit his website.

Sorry Mark.
I am leading a small event tomorrow for Lions HealthFirst Foundation (part of Lions International) where Veronica De La Cruz is the key note speaker. Twitter, etc. I'll also write up another post on the coverage in a bit.

I just want to say kudos to all of you wonderful folks taking part in this campaign. There are so many poignant posts, it makes one realize that even though there is so much injustice in the world, there are also people willing to voice their opinions, generate awareness and lend their support. Thank you to the always cool Tony, Angie and their top notch team at BlogCatalog for serving as a catalyst and home base for the Bloggers Unite effort. Keep up the great work.

Found referrals from www.focusorganic.com in my visits today. Following the hints, I found that Stef made a list of links to the contributions done during the 15th to the Bloggers Unite For Human Rights effort. It is around here:
focusorganic.com/bloggers-unite-list/
Nicely arranged by themes

Great work,
While looking through the list, it dawned on me that not one of the presidential candidates, or even their campaign staff, bothered to participate in "Bloggers Unite For Human Rights" by submitting their blog...guess they were too busy campaigning and all.
I would like to ask my fellow Blogcat members if they have any suggestions on what we can do next to further this case. One thing I am thinking about is to somehow pick the ten best blogs, or the ten that most examplify the criteria of the posed question "Bloggers Unite For Human Rights" and then the whole Blogcat membership pick the best and the runner-up blog and then we can donate some money to the winners. I'm game for $10.00 in support of Humane Rights. How about you?
It's just a suggestion and perhaps we can get a re-mention on CNN on this effort -- and move the effort further.
