I'm curious as to the background/cross section of people we have contributing to BC on a fairly regular basis. I'd love to know if you have a degree (or several degrees), what they are in and if you are practicing in your field?

Call me curious - I know when people hear I'm an accountant, they are stymied because I've got such a "pick an adjective" personality as demonstrated in my posts LOL

I've got a B.A. in Business Economics, a Masters in Accounting and an MBA....

I have an EMT and Criminal justice music degree. It is all in one. I have a general education degree. Those are the classses I took to get it. I had an EMT licenses and paid for college thru jazz band.

Currently nothing (I'm 21 years old) but am studying at Georgia Tech for a B.S. in Industrial and Systems Engineering with a minor in Pure Mathematics. I don't really consider that the mark of my education though.
  4. ToughCookieMommy
I have a B.A. in Spanish with a minor in Education and I have a Master's of Science in Education in Literacy Studies.
  5. Agit8r
I have an Associates of Applied Science from a predatory educator that shall remain nameless.
    1. jeremyjanson
      LOL. Poor guy.
    2. Agit8r
      "poor..."

      yes

are y'all using your degrees for your current job/profession? for instance, my brother has a degree in psychology....and is running my family's truck driving school and testing sites. my older sister has a degree in restaurant/hotel management and is selling elevators and my little sister has a degree in sociology and is a school teacher (after moonlighting as a paralegal and analyst for awhile in manhattan). it always seems to be hit or miss if someone actually uses their degree(s) for the jobs/careers they have....
    1. Agit8r
No, but even when i was there wasn't enough money in it to pay off the debt incurred before retirement. The current system of indentured servitude known as the student loan system is what Conservatives refer to as "moral order"
  7. R1VERT1LT
    BSc in Banking & Finance
    MSc in Marketing Management
  8. amybyrd21
I was using mine until I got burned out and mad about an abuse that went on by a few other EMT's that could have laned us all in jail. I decided that is was not worth it. I maybe using my criminal justice soon or just opening a catering business
    1. sjtavo
i feel ya on the burned out part - sometimes I wish I were just a librarian (me, a building full of books, match made in heaven!). I've purpusely NOT gotten a CPA because I don't want the personal liability that comes with it. it's bad enough I work in an information-sensitive position with a publicly-traded company - I don't need more culpability than I already have so I try to avoid any and all sticky situations!
  9. Deray28
I have a BS in Chemistry and Biology with specialty in Clinical Lab, a Masters in Microbiology and I'm pursuing a PhD in Microbiology.
    1. polybore
      Yay microbiology rocks.
    2. sjtavo
sweet jesus - I'm impressed LOL science always was my worst subject LOL

I have a degree (BA) and two college diplomas (paralegal & library technician). I loved college and university too and I had great marks ie. honors. However, they did not prove to be particularly useful when it came to making a living.

I wanted to be an English major but couldn't figure out how I'd make any money with it. So I picked a major that I happened to be good at and could make money using...and now 15 years later, I love my job, I'm great at my job and I make money at my job, and all I want to do is write!
  11. timethief
I'm an artist. I'm self employed. I also I do part-time research and writing work under contract. I have other credentials as well, but as they do directly relate to my contracted work, and as that work is all done under contracts with non-disclosure clauses (NDC) I didn't include them above.

Bachelors in English. Currently doing outreach work for a low-income weatherization program paid for by the Southern California Gas Company. Previously worked in office administration for a general construction company. I've utilized my acquired skills from my English degree in everything I've done since college.

Most people don't know what can be done with an English degree. The biggest assumption is that we can only write. The truth is, we specialize in research, communication, writing (technical and creative), problem/solution analysis, character analysis, situational analysis. The most common jobs for English majors include being lawyers, human resource specialists, educators, and working in advertisement and marketing. You will also find business executives who have English degrees.

I always joke that the ideal job for an English major would be being a spy for the CIA. Why? Because English majors can adapt to any situation.

After 7 years, finally got a bachelors in PE after being kicked out of college for 2 years for being a bad boy. Went back twice: once to start a PhD program in European lit., again an MA in counseling and guidance-both times dropped out after the first semester. Mostly self-educated in literature, philosophy and psychology, although I did study at a private psychology school for over two years, doing hands on training with fellow psychologists and clients. My communications skills have definitely proved valuable in the meager amount of work I've done in my life.
    1. cookingasshole
      bad boy how?
    2. nothingprofound
I only came to school to cause trouble. Disrupting classes. Annoying professors. Destroying school property. A first-class jerk.
    3. cookingasshole
tisk tisk tisk. I was always a model student but bad in other ways.
    4. nothingprofound
Besides your obvious drug and porn addictions, how were you BAD?
    5. cookingasshole
      no porn...never needed it

just "other stuff" if you catch my drift.
  14. aspotofblog
I'm not qualified enough to answer this question
  15. CatherinetteRings
I don't have a degree and never needed one but , i have worked in the travel industry beside people who did have a degree and got promoted before them , I was also teaching in Japan and i worked in finance . Im a jack of all trades .

One of my favorite movie is Catch me if you can ? You dont need a degree if you work hard enough .

Very impressive, everyone! I'm about a year or so from my Criminology and Psychology degrees. I also have a diploma in professional writing as well as in Criminology. I really would be a professional student if someone would let me.
    1. sjtavo
I'm the exact same way - I'd love to go back to school, just can't think of what I'd like to major in! I've pretty much exhausted the business area. I earned my last degree online - absolutely loved the experience so I'd definitely want to go that route. If I'd want work to pay for it, though, it's got to be related to my field of study. hmmmm
  17. stellak
A Bachelors in Marketing and International Business, however I have yet to work in my field. My work experience is more in the banking/financial sector.
  18. meamwye
Both Bachelors and Masters in Computer Engineering.
  19. ryheanne
    BS in Information Technology
  20. Rivy
BFA in drawing and painting. 2 and a half years in MFA program - finished courses, final art show, but walked away without writing thesis. By that time (I had also spent 3 years in other special art schools) I realized I had no interest in more academia - the only place where an MFA would be an asset. No specific goals in life. Wound up 18 years in journalism. Also did my share of mopping floors. A drifter basically. Seeing what happens next. Okay with it.

Graduating this fall with BS in Accounting and Minor in International Relations
    1. sjtavo
are you going to look for a job in accounting? The market is pretty saturated but the more flexible you are (willing to relocate, do ExPat overseas (if you're in US), etc... the better off you are.
  22. clioandme
BA, MA, and PhD in History

I'm currently teaching history but am so poor that I might end up leaving the field.
    1. sjtavo
that's awful - especially to think of the money you invested to earn the degrees and now the job you have utilizing them isn't paying out.
  23. ThriftShopRomantic
I have a BA in Creative Writing and Professional Writing.

And yup, I'm using my degree for my job. I'm a marketing writer for B-to-B clients.
  24. Stillthinking
I have a BA in Architectural Studies. I was using it, but lately, I just twiddle my thumbs.
  25. MadMadMargo
I have a MFA in music performance. Unfortunately, I've never used this degree in this area.
  26. FaithfulinPrayer
I've been to college several times, but never got a degree. I could never figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up and still trying to figure it out. But research and writing and computer work is what I love to do and that is what I do every day now, so I'm happy with that.
  27. Richer44
I have a Bachelor of Science with a specialization in Wildlife and Habitat Ecology. As well, I have an Envrionmental Certificate. Currently I am putting my schooling to good use as a Senior Habitat Biologist for the Canadian Government.

Pretty interesting to see what everyone's background is.
    1. sjtavo
I'm always envious of people who do "field" work. I'm good at what I do, but how boring compared to working in nature or studying habits of animals. Doesn't matter how you wrap it up, Accounting is NOT exciting LOL
  28. christibroer
BA in English. Taught for a number of years too, but never really "hired," because I'm over a certain age. Love to write but sometimes I am so ADHD! :-)
  29. npuhalsky
Bachelor of Science in Business Administration - and yes, its as long and boring of a career ladder as you think
  30. TCblogger
I am probably on the lower end of the education spectrum unless you count self education. I've had a real estate license, the last college credits I got were for my EMT license, I have a secretarial science certificate or whatever you get in a year.
  31. newblogmogul
I have a Bachelor of Science, Business Administration concentration in Management degree, Just graduated May 2009 and still looking for employment. If I don't find a job within the next month, I am going back to school.
