I feel as if I am crossing a threshold into previously unexplored territory - I'm actually using this site in order to ask a serious question!

When someone guest authors an article for one of the major travel blog sites, how does the compensation work? Of course the guest author gets some publicity and maybe even a link to their own website, but is there a standard rate per word (U.S.) or something like that?

Thanks!

Each site that has guest authors has a way to compensate them.

    Each one is different.

    For example:

One site may offer a PER WORD rate.
One Site may offer a one time pay.
One site may offer link stats - building.
One site may offer a Spotlight advertising post - and ad link.

It really depends on the site that you're writing for - and you should ask them directly BEFORE you submit any work - and then choose if it is effective for you.

Thanks WW - that does help. In order to understand everything you wrote I'm going to have to admit how ignorant I am about this field:

      - When you say "link stats - building" does that mean letting you post a link to your own website, or something more than that?

      - By Spotlight advertising are you referring to Comcast Spotlight? I think that advertising on cable TV is a little beyond me right now - but maybe someday?

Pretty much. Usually a big blog or a well known travel blog is going to have a higher PR than your blog - which means that the more high PR blogs you are linked to - your blog will rank higher in Google search engines - etc.

So there are some places that it is imperative to get links to ---- IF you could be so lucky. (on one hand... and on the other hand it's pretty freaking arrogant... LOL! - Call it the SEO money Keypoint Mafia Mentality.)

But also having your site linked at a major site that might have superior viewers is like getting paid advertising - as well... In it's own financial way - especially if those viewers somehow manage to go to your site and become sales or whatnot...

Spotlight advertising is --- well - it's several things... It could be a Banner rotating advertisement - or it could be a small link text - or you could have your own 125x125 little square spotlighting you... Or you could have your own guest column page - etc. etc. ad infinitum in the cyber realestate game.

      Yanno?

I've got a guest author who has contributed 3 posts, but as I don't make a dime myself off of my blog, nor do they. For them, "compensation" has been simply having an established platform from which to speak. I'm glad I could provide that...never thought 2 years ago that one day I'd be a "stable platform", but I guess that goes hand in hand with my ever increasing boringness.
