I have just put a contact form on my blog, is that a good idea? Or is fraught with danger?

If you are referring to a wordpress contact form then it's fine. Why do you ask here? The forum for wordpress.com is over here en.forums.wordpress.com/
support.wordpress.com/contact-form/
After publishing, a simple contact form asking for the sender’s name, email address, website and message will be displayed. The IP will be recorded and made available in the email sent to the blogger.-
I removed mine.
(1) It was not frequently used.
(2) I began to get contact form questions that should have been comments on blog posts.
(3) I got requests for link exchanges and for advertising that were annoying. No advertising is allowed on wordpress.com blogs - DUH. I got tired of replying just to say that. Also I don't do reciprocal link exchanges. This isn't 1999 it's 2009 and all blogs need one way non-reciprocal backlinks. I also got tired of explaining that too. -
@ Timethief, I also get lot of link exchange requests. I do not usually to them.
But since my blog is self hosted WP, I have kept a form their so that readers can tell me problems about blog.
Just yesterday, a reader reported about a plugin problem which blocked users from commenting identifying them as Bots!
