There are so many excellent blogs around it amazes me why many don't get them published in a hardcopy book format.

It's not that hard with many self-publishing companies around.

The other alternative is e-books the job is just about done with your blogs and even an easlier alternative.

Has anyone done it this way. i.e. blog to book, or is anyone contemplating doing it? If so lets discuss ways forward.

My material is not high quality enough for that. I recall BC member Kevin of Pointless Banter blog hard copy published his material. That would be exciting.

If you have a wordpress blog it can be ordered in such a manner as to produce a book format.

How to write a book using wordpress
Almost. This shows you one way to write something that is chapter based.
A blog is a reverse chronological publishing tool. That’s what it is and to make it behave differently you will need to do some work yourself. You also need your readers to exercise some self-discipline.
Following this will produce a ‘front cover’, an ‘index’ and the actual work.
    1. Create a page called “front”
    2. Create a page called “index”
    3. Create a page called “chapters”
    4. Go to Settings > Reading
Make “front” the front of the blog
    Make “chapters” have the posts
    5. On “front” make 1 link to “index”
    6. Write a post - your Chapter 1. Publish it. Copy the URL of the post
    7. Edit “index” and place a link to Chapter 1
    8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 for each chapter
Recent Posts / Recent Comments and Archives widgets could let people move around more freely and could break the flow. You may want to remove them. You still need a link to the “index” - use a text widget for that link.
You could use Pages for the chapters instead of posts.
The names of those pages is optional of course.

      Thank you for the plug!

Yes, I hope to publish by the end of 2009. I have 400 pages of my book completed. I have about 4 chapters left to write and the rough draft will be completed (and then the real work of editing begins).

I have a couple of connections to literary agents in NYC, which I plan to take advantage of when the time comes. I know two people who have written several books between them and they have both offered to help me.

I'm planning on it in the long term, but I'm not convinced self-publishing is the way to do it.

The biggest cost is proofreading. You really need a professsional to do it if it is to be done properly.

The other consideration is the cost of marketing and promotion. Don't forget only around 35% of people int he UK have access to the internet so the market is quite limited in this genre.

If you want to go with the Big Boys--the N.Y. publishing houses--there's only one way. Get an agent. Most of these Big Boy will no longer even look at a book mansuscript, unless it is submitted to them by a Literary Agent.

i would definitely love to get my writings published ... in fact i want to establish myself as a non-fiction writer (these days i am also involved in writing a book, with a couple of people), but how to deal with plagiarism? one of my articles was plagiarized by a leading newspaper when i sent it to them to get published. this led me to take up blogging. it would be great if you could tell me something about how to go about publishing and all.

Publishing isn't the problem...there have always been vanity presses and now there are ebooks, which are even easier.

The problem is marketing the book effectively. It does no good to write and publish unless you can get people to buy. This is the reason that traditional publishing routes remain the best...they have the infrastructure to not only publish a book, but to promote it as well.

You don't see any NY Times best selling authors using self-publishing or e-publishing, do you?
    1. timethief
So true. For example crkian wrote an excellent ebook on Blog Catalog and even though the price is very low the marketing end of it isn't easy.
