I'm on dial up - so I can't even listen myself... but I love the cover version of the Eurhythmic’s "Sweet Dreams Are Made Of These" that Marilyn Manson did To me it's 10 times more haunting than the original... which was just sort of psychologically scary. LOL
    1. harleyblues
      Hiya Anna

you know I have never heard one song from M. Manson I might have night mares:)

    2. annaswan
I wouldn't suggest making that one the first you ever listen to then! LOL His voice is so ... so... well, he just sounds like what I'd expect a dead person to sound like. Hollow, cold, unemotional, unattached.

But... at the same time, I love it! There's a word for this...
    3. Friday13
Ah, I've heard that cover. It perfectly suited the movie it was used on.
    4. harleyblues
lol Anna I'll keep that in mind

I think it was him that did a really, really bad cover of Personal Jesus, too. I find him too screamo and to be trying too hard to shock to be a good musician.

Grace Covered the song "Slave to the Rhythm"
Accept covered the song "Ball to the Wall"
Wendy covered the song "It's my Life"

Yeah I like Grace...she had some really cool album covers back in da day.
  6. drjay1966
John Coltrane's "My Favorite Things" is a true classic (in fact, any other jazz musician covering it is covering Coltrane's version of the Rogers and Hammerstein original--something that can also be said of "All Along the Watchtower"--even Dylan himself says he plays Hendrix's version in concert).

By Far - far - far the most outrageous cover I've ever heard in my life was of Snoop Dog's "Gin and Juice" - and for the life of me I don't know for sure who does it, some people have said Phish, some say Gossip Rag. But it's country! Has a mandolin and the whole bit - and it's sang in this real back woods country voice. Hillarious!!!
    1. harleyblues
      Anna

you can't be serious Gin & Juice is a cover? I thought Snoop Dogg & Doc Dre wrote & produced it?.,.,. that song rawks~ that's some urban culture there

      www.youtube.com/watch?v=czyfws7OLCs
      hb~
    2. annaswan
I'm totally serious - someone redone it - COUNTRY... I laughed so hard I hurt myself!!!! My copy came from a friend who burned a Mix CD and it said it was Phish... but I read on a forum that it's a group called Gossip Rag... so I have no clue who it actually is.
    3. annaswan
I bet so Friday!! It say's that version is bluegrass - and it certainly is - has a mandolin and the whole bit. I can't believe Snoop didn't FREAK over it... I would have. LOL
  8. drjay1966
Then, I once made a mix for somebody of mostly covers of the Gershwin's Bros. "Summertime." My favorites are Big Brother and the Holding Company's (feat. Janis Joplin) and Miles Davis with Gil Evans' versions, though there are lots of other good ones.
    1. harleyblues
Man Dr Jay I second that Summertime by Big Bro and the holding Co version is brill!

LOL They keep taunting me with DSL - but the nearest hook up thingie is still 18 miles away. So I clug along at the spankin' fast speed of... 21.6 Kbps.

      If I don't visit a person's blog - it ain't cuz I didn't want to - I couldn't get there! LOL

for any guitar lover Laurence Juber covering anything Beatles

for those that donot know Laurence played with Wings

check out "while my guitar gentely weeps"

    uk.youtube.com/watch?v=xCSQn_Xbp-g
  13. harleyblues
Maybe I'm amazed by Laurence Juber

    uk.youtube.com/watch?v=YfbcpvTtBrs&feature=related

I hope the Accoustic Guitarist listens to the Juber covers
    1. acousticguitarist
I have only one Juber album, it's not covers. One of the Bloggers that is a member of BC had Juber playing on his album that was recorded with the legendary (to me and people I grew up with in Autralia) John Batdorf from Batdorf and Rodney. Juber is the former McCartney guitarist who played with wings.

When it comes to covers, you'll keep me busy for hours calling them up.

Í still stand by Tim Obrien as a master of covers, based on the the two songs I mentioned

You might like Angelique Kidjo doing Voodoo Child
    2. harleyblues
well I'll search them out AG, of course I know who Laurence is!

dang I had another guitarist for yeah, but I'm not recalling his name at the moment dangit!! I have his cd will look it up

This is Grossman and Renbourn doing the song Round Midnight, you may be familiar with Wes Montgomery's version

Chrissie Hynde (from Pretenders) does a beautiful cover of Angel of the Morning originally by Juice Newton. If yer interested in listening you'll find it on my music player on my site. ( inmyredhead.blogspot.com/ on player #2)

I'm also a big fan of Cyndi Lauper and she did a beautiful version of Unchained Melody.( on my original player )

To turn it around a bit, how about a cover that is known as an 'original' but isn't, and the actual original is better? For anyone who's on the younger side and might only know the Celine Dione version of 'I drove all night', I love to point out that Cyndi Lauper did it first and waay more beautifully.. imho. She really does have an actual (non squeeky) voice when she wants to. (oringal player)

And who can forget Twisted Sisters version of 'Leader of the Pack' also done by the Shangri-las of the 50's era. Twisted Sister did their version from HIS point of view as a twist. (sorry, not on my players)
    1. harleyblues
Chrissie Hynde also does a brillant CREEP!
  15. legbamel
I've posted on a few of these so far on my blog. I'm a huge fan of versions (although I suppose I should use the term covers on my blog) and will likely have dozens more. Here are the five I've done so far: not-pop-jukebox.blogspot.com/search/label/versions .

There are bands that devote their whole career to covering songs in a certain style. Check out The Puppini Sisters, who've done Heart of Glass, I Will Survive, Walk Like an Egyptian, and others. Then there are Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, who take on just about anything and tranform it into their own sound. Then there's the lounge guy Richard something, whose name escapes me at the moment.

Emmy the Great's cover of The Pixies' 'Where is My Mind' is brilliant, she really makes it her own. I also really love Lightspeed Champion's cover of Amy Winehouse's 'Back to Black.'
