    We are experiencing a prolonged heatwave on the west coast in an area where air conditioners are rarely seen outside of commercial establishments. It hasn't been this hot for as long a period of time since 1880.

    We are on extreme forest fire hazard alert under a title industrial shutdown. We are conserving water and praying that all tourists obey the "no open fires" warnings and signage.

    While we swear and fret, my friends and I have been exchanging some cold drink recipes that we are drinking to beat the heat, and I thought that B.C. members might have some to share as well.

    I'll start things of with these three favorites:

    Iced Mocha
    Ingredients (Serves 6)
    * 6 cups strong brewed coffee, chilled
    * 2 teaspoons cocoa powder
    * 1/4 cup brown sugar
    * 2 cups half and half cream
    Instructions
    (1) Blend all of the ingredients in the blender in two batches until frothy.
    (2) Pour over ice and serve immediately.

    Thai Iced Tea
    Ingredients (serves 4 - tall glasses)
    * 6 cups water
    * 8 tea bags, black
    * 1 cup evaporated milk
    * 4 tbs sugar
    * 4 tsp cinnamon
    * 4 tsp cardamom
    * Ice, crushed
    Instructions
    (1) Boil the water and steep tea bags with cardamom for 5 minutes.
    (2) Strain out teabags and let cool.
    (3) Put ice into 4 glasses, and add tea, leaving about a quarter of the glass empty.
    (4) To each glass add, 1 tbs sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon and 1/4 cup of milk and stir briskly.
    (5) Serve.

    Summertime Slush Tea
    Ingredients (Serves 12)
    * 6 cups strong Darjeeling tea
    * 1 can frozen lemonade
    * 4 cans water
    * 2 1/2 cups pineapple juice
    * 1/2 cup sugar (while tea is hot)
    * mint leaves
    Instructions
    (1) Mix together.
    (2) Freeze.
    (3) Serve as a slush garnished with mint leaves.

    Please post your favorite cold drink recipes for sipping on hot summer days in the comment boxes below.

        WTH? Why not go all out and add a slice of lemon or lime?

      The advantages of iced water are manifold and easily overlooked:

      I have never understood the lemon or lime in ice water. My wife does it ALWAYS. It makes me gag.
    6. trailofpen
      Yeah, I always take the lemon/lime off of the glass when it's served to me in that fashion. Although, I am a big fan of the miniature umbrella. It's a great way to shade your drink and keep it cool.
    7. SweetViolet
      Here in SA they will ask you if you want ice with your water or soft drink, but not lemon...so the drink shows up with a slice of lemon floating in it! (which I detest in my water or Coke)

      I have learned to order my drinks "Coke Zero with ice, no lemon" which, last night, ended with the waiter asking if I wanted it in a can or "poured" and when I said "can" he then asked me which size can did I want!!

      Arggh! Just bring me a cold, unadulterated can of Coke and be done with it!

    Fill a third of the juice jug with orange juice, another third with cranberry juice, top the jug up with sparkling white wine.

    Serve over crushed ice with a slice of orange.

    Kind of like a sangria I guess, but a little bit different

      @Sam
      I like it! I'm into cranberry juice. Thanks.

    I love Thai iced tea and Thai iced coffee. I am going to have to try the slush tea. It looks amazing and it's precisely the type of summer drink I like.

    If you want an alcoholic cocktail, I like Stoli blueberry vodka with lemonade. Though lately, I am loving Mojitos.

      If you like slush then here's recipe for one we usually drink every day.

        Blackberry or Raspberry Slush
        Ingredients (serves 24 cups)
        * 2 (10 ounce) packages frozen blackberries or raspberries in syrup, slightly thawed
        * 12-ounce can frozen lemonade, thawed
        * 3 cups cranberry juice
        * 1 liter bottle club soda, chilled
        Instructions
        (1) In a blender, combine blackberries or raspberries and lemonade concentrate and blend until smooth.
        (2) In large freezer container, thoroughly mix the blackberry or raspberry puree with cranberry juice. Freeze for 3-4 hours or until slush consistency, stirring occasionally.
        (3) Pour slush into a 4 quart nonmetal pitcher. Add club soda, stir gently to blend, pour and serve.
    2. Stillthinking
      Yum! These are all ingredients I usually have on hand too. Excellent.

    Coffee (or any other HOT drink) is the best solution to quench your thirst on a hot summer day .. that is .. chased by Cranberry Vodka and Orange Juice drinks on ice, and then jumping into a pool or lake.
    1. timethief
      @petlvr
        I can drink cranberry juice and I can sit in the ocean or a bathtub but I can't drink the vodka, so the good news is that there will be plenty for you if you visit the coast.

    Ginger Ale...Sprite works too!

    I used to make it in a punch bowl, otherwise I would give you easy measurements to work with.

    Although it is always humid and hot in the tropics, it is nothing compared to the heatwave you are experiencing. When I have to be in the summer heat during my travels, I make sure I have sips of orange ice blocks every now and then to keep me rehydrate.

    It gets really at night in Australia during summer, so we keep our blinds down a few hours after sunrise to keep the heat outl so the house stays cool longer.

    One thing I do like to have good cold shower in the morning as well.

    For drinks, well anything goes for me ... but my favourit is just hot tea and standing under the ceiling fan.
  7. celticmusicfan
    I love iced tea with cinnamon. nothing beats the refreshing taste on a summer day

    I've been making fresh squeezed lemon/limeade.

    Ingredients
    1 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar
    3/4 cup fresh lemon juice
    3/4 cup fresh lime juice
    Lemon and lime slices

    Directions
    In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar and 1 1/2 cups of water over moderately high heat; stir to dissolve the sugar.

    Just before the mixture comes to a boil, remove from the heat. Stir in 3 1/4 cups of cold water, then pour into a pitcher.

    Stir in the lemon and lime juices and refrigerate. Serve in tall glasses over ice, garnished with lemon and lime slices.

    I don't like coffee in any form and I don't care for iced tea...the tannin in it leaves my mouth feeling funny.

    My absolute favourite hot weather drink is gin & tonic. I use only Bombay Sapphire gin, as it is clean and crisp tasting, and Schweppes Tonic Water (here in SA we can get in glass bottles with the name "Indian Quinine Water" printed on it!).

    Fill a tall chimney glass with ice. Add 1 shot gin, fill to the top with tonic water. Take a quarter of fresh cut lime, squeeze into glass, then toss in lime after it. Serve with a straw and stirring stick.

    My favourite non-alcoholic home made summer drink is lemonade. I like big lemons which I roll (put a lot of pressure on the lemon while rolling) to make them easier to juice.

    I always juice them by hand, using an old fashioned glass juicer...the mechanical ones seem to put too much pith and oil from the peel, making the juice unnecessarily bitter.

    To 1 cup fresh lemon juice add 1.5 quarts water and 1/2 cup honey. Stir to dissolve honey then taste...add more honey if needed. I usually end up using about 3/4 cup honey, depending on how sour the lemons are.

    You can make it pink lemonade by adding some berry juice.

    You can jazz this up further by adding sprigs of mint, a bit of ginger...or a sweet liqueur...I favour a tot of Southern Comfort.

    There are also a lot of drink recipes on my cooking blog.

        I love fresh squeezed lemonade too, and I will check out the drink recipes on your blog as well.

    Bailey's Original Irish Cream
    1 cup light cream
    1 can sweetened condensed milk (14 oz.)
    1 2/3 cups Irish whiskey
    1 teaspoon instant coffee
    2 tablespoons chocolate syrup
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    1 teaspoon almond extract
    Combine all the ingredients in a blender and blend at high speed
    for about 20 seconds.
    Transfer to a clean bottle with a tightly fitting cap.
    Store, refrigerated, and shake well before using.

    Blueberry Lemonade

    1 cup plus 2 tbsp. granulated sugar
    2 cups water
    1 pint fresh blueberries
    1−1/2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice (from about
    10 big lemons, including pulp but not seeds)
    .
    First make a simple syrup by combining 1 cup sugar and water in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the mixture boils. Lower the heat and allow the syrup to simmer for another minute. Remove from heat and let cool. In a blender or food processor, puree the blueberries with 2 tablespoons of sugar. In a pitcher, combine the cooled syrup, lemon juice and blueberry puree. To serve, pour 1/4 to 1/3 cup ofbase into a glass and fill with water. Makes base for 12 servings.

    Galiano
    2 Cup Sugar
    1 Cup Water
    1/4 Teaspoon Anise extract
    1 Teaspoon Vanilla extract or Vanilla Bean Extract
    3 Drops yellow food coloring
    1 Fifth vodka
    Combine sugar and water in a pan and bring to a boil. Boil for 1 minute and immediately reduce heat. Simmer for 1 hour or until thickened. Remove from heat and cool.
    Pour sugar−water syrup into a sterilized quart−size bottle. Add anise
    extract, vanilla and food coloring. Stir gently and add the vodka.
    Cover and let the mixture sit for 10 days to 2 weeks before serving.
    Yield: 32 oz.

    Grand Marnier
    4 medium Oranges
    1 Vanilla bean
    2 1/2 cups Vodka
    1 cup Brandy
    1 cup white granulated sugar
    1/2 cup water
    Look for firm, heavy oranges which indicates lots of juice,
    and smooth−skinned ones free from soft spots and mold.
    Wash and peel oranges making sure to scrape ALL white rind
    from the peels to avoid bitter flavor. Slice in strips and add to
    liquor and vanilla bean. Steep 2−3 weeks, strain and filter.
    Boil together water and sugar for about 5 minutes at a full boil
    and be sure the sugar is dissolved. Allow to cool.
    Add sugar syrup to orange liquor and let age for 4 weeks.

      That's nice of you! We actually have a fully stocked bar, with a wine cellar at our house. My husband doesn't ever drink hard alcohol but loves wine--and I do have a very occasional glass of wine (like twice a year). We keep the stocked bar for friends and business clients of my husband's who come over for dinners.

    The best summer drink is chilled Buttermilk with lemon..
    and for the lactose intolerant, ice cold Mango juice
    1. melindaville
      I love mango. It was the juice I drank first as a baby in Egypt. I have an obsession with mango, as a result of my early imprinting.
    2. SweetViolet
      Ohhhh, Melinda...do I have a porkchop recipe for you! My husband's favourite way of eating porkchops...Mango Pork.

      And for people who don't like pork, it works with chicken.

      And if you don't like mango, you can make it with pineapple!

      Let me write it up and post it. Very tasty and quick to fix, too!
    3. timethief
      We love pineapple. We loathe mango so I'll be watching for your recipe too.
  18. timethief
    That's interesting. I detest the taste of mango.

      :O :O
      seriously? this is a first for me? Never knew someone who doesn't like mango

    Orange Julius has always been a favorite of mine!

    Half a can of concentrated orange juice, 1/2 C milk, 1/2 C to 1 C sugar, a dash of vanilla and some ice cubes. Blend until smooth. Best thing is, you can add any kind of fruit to give it a whole new flavor!
    1. timethief
        Thanks for the great idea. I'm going to make some.

    iced mint water (or peppermint tea)!
    1. timethief
        Those two are really good ones. I also like iced green tea and I do add mint to mine as well.

    Watermelon lemonade. I have no idea of the exact measurement for the watermelon, I usually blend 1/2 a small seedless watermelon with 2 cups of water, strain it into a quart size pitcher. Add the juice of 3-4 limes (I use key limes but regulars will do, use 2 if they are big), sugar and complete to a quart with water, add some ice and drink it! (yes, I'm using one of CA's sayings, jajajaja).

    It can also be made with cantaloupe. They are very refreshing.
    1. timethief
      @deray
        Wow! Two ideas I have never heard of. Also both contain ingredients I like so I'll be adding them to my cold beverages section. Thanks so much for posting.

    1 cup orange sherbert
    Whipped Cream or Coolwhip

    Blend juice and sherbert on med. speed till smooth

        I love the recipe minus the plastic coolwhip - it's gawd awful stuff. I'm going to make this with real cream. Thank you for sharing.

    Add rounded teaspoon of instant coffee stir well
    Add 1 packet of splenda or sugar
    Add liquid sugar-free hazelnut coffeemate to taste
    Pour over ice cubes in frozen mug, add a little water to fill mug if needed.

    Directions: Add 1 gallon water and Kool-aid drink flavoring to 5lb bag of sugar. Mix well.

    Enjoy!

    I'm caught in this West Coast heat wave and it is screeching hot.

    In this heat, water has to be the first drink of choice. Instead of adding lemon or lime - I don't like those much either - try tossing a few cucumber slices into a glass. It is unbelievably refreshing and makes drinking gallons of water in the heat a whole lot easier.
    1. trailofpen
      I know what you mean. I sometimes add slices of fresh radish to my water. makes it taste delicious and refreshing.
    2. timethief
      @Cindy &trailofpen
      I have never ever put cucumber or radishes in my water. WTH I may give them a try.
    3. tcinvestor
      That is a nice twist with the cukes or radishes. I still prefer the limes myself but will give that a go this week.
