I'm in the process of doing a complete overhaul for my blog and I'm going to monetize it while I'm at it. I know posting "just any old image" off of Google Images can get you busted for copyright infringement.

So I ask you Blog Catalogers, where are the good places/sources to get relevant (up-to-date) Copyright-free images?

Regarding search engines, my method would be to type in "Copyright-Free" and then type in the image I was looking for.

For example: I would enter in Google: "Copyright-Free Hipster"

Unfortunately, this didn't turn up with anything at all that was relevant or close to what I originally searched for.

Any hints? Tips? Pointers? I'm really trying to avoid paying for images. (Not even $1 images---I know, I'm cheap. But I'm on a tight budget.)

      Well, thank you, MyDen. And how convenient that you blog about that very thing I'm looking for. (lol)

      Really, thanks again!

      And anyone else who may have more resources, I'm always looking for more to add to my FREE IMAGES bank.

      Thanks, GMoney! (Wow, I've always wanted to say that: "GMoney" and not sound like a poseur.)

      I've just signed up! Thanks much!

      I have thought about changing the name from Gmoney, but it is so goofy I love it. Back in the day I called myself luvbug (that is FUNNY)

    Hi,
    I have been working on a list of free for commercial use photo resources, it is not quite ready for primetime, and I have previously only made it available to the couple of people that help we with posts to the site.

    But I have published it for this discussion thread. - a bit hidden and blocked from search. I will probably take it back down when this thread dies out until it is finished an polished.

    You might also want to read some of the regular posts under wordpress and writing tips in the category listings for similar information
    1. thelookout
      WOW!! that's a monster list - you might want to let the stumble group know when you post the full entry as I bet everyone'll want to stumble (and bookmark) it
    2. LucyDee
      werelax - That's an amazing list. I can see you put a lot of work into it. Let me know when you're finished. I'll make sure to submit it to StumbleUpon (it's better if someone else other than yourself stumbles it) and I'll make sure to leave a solid review. Congrats! That's quite a feat!

      Wererelax---Thanks for the research and links!

    Just always make sure that if your blog is for profit, you use images that are free for commercial as well and personal use. Many of the sites that say they are free are only free for personal use.
    1. LucyDee
      *+*+*+*This is a very good piece of advice. Thanks April!

    If anyone checks out some of the sites on my list and has comments on any site they visit please leave a comment on the page, and I will add your viewpoint to the list when published in final form.

      are you saying that you only pay for photos in your blog?

      I tried looking at your blog, but it wouldn't load anything for me.
  10. PetLvr
    Meanwhile .. I couldn't trust BlogCatalog to never delete this thread, so .. I individually bookmarked every link posted! What a great resource!

    Thanks

    Getty Images are a great source too. But you may have to pay a little. :-)

      Please note that these photos require payment to use.
  12. Profitline
    I always use flickr for my photos and i will just give credits to the images use.
    1. LucyDee
      I never thought to use Flickr! Good idea, Profitline! Do you need permission though, in order to have ads and make money off of your site.

      If those photos are licensed underneath Creative Commons then it may be specified in their outline. But I think you would have to be careful if you're making $$/££ off of your site if you include those images.
  13. taylorblue
    Those are great! Thanks...I am always looking for places too!
  14. werelax
    I could not find anything on flickr that might waive typical copywrite rules for posted content. So unless the photograph provides a creative commons license or other explicit permission to use, most uses, commercial or non-commercial require specific approval by the photographer.

    Has anyone found something different?

    The way I read it they even request a link back to their site if you use your own photo's on another website as a condition of using their site for hosting your photos.
  15. techfun
    I do all my searching through www.creativecommons.org, sometimes I have to take multiple runs up against the Flickr search engine to find what I want.

    I just came across this site in my StumbleUpon account:

    I like yotophoto.com

    It's basically a meta search portal that searches several copyleft and royalty free sources at once for you. It also has some very advanced searching features like matching color hex code values.

    It WILL return some no commercial images as well, so be sure to check the license for any image you find there. Most of them are copy left and reusable though.
  18. LucyDee
    Someone just informed me of PHOTO.net. I'm not sure if it's Copyright Free though. (fair warning)
  19. jgriffin123
    my blog is all about this. if i can help out and it looks like people have done a good job covering all the basic ones, let me know. another good one is www.morguefile.com/
    1. LucyDee
      Thanks, J!
      Really helpful! I'll make sure hit up your blog and to PM you about getting celebrity photos, more particularly comedian's photos.

    hell dont worry about it unless its posted copy right infrig. than dont use the piccie!`
    1. LucyDee
      Well, it's the "making money" off of my blog with copyright infringed photos that I worry about. If I can avoid a lawsuit, I will.

      Are you going to dig up every dead post in the database referencing photos? That could get real tiresome real fast.
    2. timethief
      I think he already did because I keep running into them.
    3. PetLvr
      despite how apammy that sounds - I think that is a great useful way of using BlogCatalog and give CHEERS (that's good) to when his links ends up on resourceful posts like this one ... or www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/where-do-you-get-images-for-blog-posts#co... or this one .. www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/looking-for-good-clip-art-or-royalty-free... .. it's a relevant spam and promotional use to pass along his blog URL.

      However .. on threads like .. www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/do-you-place-a-photo-with-your-postsand-i... .. or www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/is-it-safe#comment_589640 .. or www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/do-you-attract-your-blog-readers-with-ima... ... I give great JEERS (that's bad) ..

      ~~~~
      e.g. to jordanmcclements & Others .. it's okay to provide your blog as a resource when people are asking for it - not when a keyword just pops up in a random search.
    4. DaneMorgan
      Bumping one old thread, sure. But when you post the same message to two or more, it changes.
      A better option still would be to post a new thread with his information and linking to the two older threads if he was being altruistic in bringing them to peoples attention.
    Click the link, scroll down to the bottom of the page and look under "Images". There you will find over 60 sites that provide free images that you can use in your non-commercial blog onecoolsite.wordpress.com/resources/
      Thank you, timethief - I just got the picture I needed for my next blog post from the U.S Dept of Agriculture, which link I found on your site
    2. timethief
      @jan4insight
      You're welcome. I have found that most government departments at all levels do have free images that can be used by bloggers. In all cases it's important to read the terms of use.
      In addition to the sites I have listed bloggers can check out
