Having lost Millions on the stock market in 2000, we had to start again without money and for three years have lived for free by swapping goods and services.

Tell us your thoughts and leave your blog address so we can check you all out.

Thanks

Shirley and Holly.

No I cannot live without money. All nations of the world have monetary systems and governments, utilities, banks and financial institutions, etc. do not accept barter as a means of paying for telephone service, ISP services, electricity, health care services, taxes, driver's licences, etc.

Unlike the vast and overwhelming number of people on the planet, who live in cities and lead urban lifestyles, I live a draw water from the well and split your own firewood country lifestyle. It's a simple and barter based, recycled and reused goods, labor exchange and product lifestyle. FWIW this topic has been explored in another thread www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/in-a-barter-economy-whats-your-skill

Even the Bible (as I am Christian)...says if a man does not work, he can not eat.

I love luxuries of life so it would be difficult to live without money ...

      there are some conditions though.

I'll need to be hand fed fruit salad, have my back rubbed and my tail brushed. Then maybe you could clinch the deal.

I've learned to live off the canyons of the San Gabriel Mountains. I can go on without money.

Could I? Yes, easily. Is it feasible in this society? No, I'd still need at least some money.

I thought it might be kind of cool to live on a commune, but alas, I'm too old to do something like that.

Money is simply a subjective concept. Like 'respect' or 'divinity' or 'boinkability'. If enough people disagreed that little pieces of paper shouldn't represent value or worth in the world, then they wouldn't. And something else might. Or might not.

You can't survive for long without providing 'value' or 'currency' in some loose definition of the world, but could you survive without 'money', as we understand it today?

Sure. In the right society, you could still contribute, provide value, and generate currency among your fellow people. Isolated groups of people and enclaves committed to a barter economy have done it for years, even centuries. No physical 'money' might change hands, but that's all symbolism and voodoo, anyway. Just a particularly pervasive and convincing voodoo, is all.

Besides, I know from experience you can live without money, even in our current structure; I went to graduate school for four years. It's not much of a life, but it beats subsistence farming.

    By an eyelash.

.. i guess money speaks everything but what if money becomes worthless/valuesless? What if its just a peace of paper? What if the main source of trading is just a simple stone or anything?

I don't think I can ever live without it. Money buys all our needs.

If you take a trip to West Africa for example, you will find many people without money living in huts...Thing is, they are often among the happiest people you will ever find. Can we live that way? I doubt it, in the vast majority of cases.

I can live without a lot of money because I wasn't raised with a silver spoon in my mouth. All I need is enough to pay off all my expenses and have a little financial security. You don't need millions for that.

Nope, it's sad to say that we live in a world where capitalism and consumerism is key to society but I don't think my life would be as good without money, plus it gets you the basics-food, water, etc. These days nothing is free.
  22. xmarks
Yes but then I would need a gun.

If everyone else lived w/o money. In this society is hard. Some societies use shells for money.... I would rather not have to worry about money but hey folk we are not birds..(like in the Bible) that god takes care of the birds and they don't worry about anyting...If I was a bird all I would need would be a warm spot and some worms and seeds.....

The benevolence of the closest friends/relatives may be helpful to ward off hunger and clothing requirements, but otherwise in this materialistic world of necessities, money extremely essential. No talks of spirituality and other virtues do not come from the hungry body.
