Do you consider yourself as creative person ?

What i observed is that creativity makes a person restless, and that brings unhappiness .They find it bit difficult to adjust to their sorroundings.

Are they confused souls ?

and whats your say on pseudo intellectuals ?

I honestly don't think that creative people suffer from depression any more than any other type of people. But then, depression affects so many people (did you know that more people missed work in the U.S. last year due to depression than ALL other physical illnesses combined?).

I just think we notice the depression more in creative people because they are more likely to be involved in things which also make them famous.

      yes you are right,
but ,still i feel ,or rather question that,Are they confused souls ?.As we do not have any barometer to decide about who is creative nd who is not.
the syndrome and feeling of being creative litterally torcher many .

I think creative people are not any more confused than noncreative people.

I think you can tell who is creative by what they produce in their lives. For example, creatively, I am a musician and I have been an actor in my life--I am also a writer. I think all of these aspects of who I am point to creativity.

People who aren't creative don't have a driving need to create art--in whatever way art is created. For me, it has always been a strong need.

great reply. That means success or failure of their produce is not the barometer.

Urge to do something aboslutely new or in established domains falls into creativity.Did i got it right .
    4. melindaville
Well, it's not just the urge to do something but the urge to create art (which can take many different forms, including artwork of any kind, writing, acting, music, crafting, etc). Creativity is a personality trait, I think. It is an inherent part of a person--and cannot be removed or stopped (unless something like a brain injury occurs--then that can truly change a person's fundamental personality).

Fine , but when i see examples around, esp writers not only in india but other countries also, I find they have the worst life histories of inter personal relations with their sorroundings,peers,wife/s and childrens .

But don't you think that you just hear more about the people who have terrible, hard lives (who are creative) because there is more interest and the public follows them--because they are famous?

For example, Earnest Hemingway, arguably the greatest American author, was depressed and committed suicide. He was incredibly creative. One could could conclude that since he was creative and depressed, those must be correlated. But just as many non-creative people are depressed and commit suicide. We just don't hear about them because they aren't famous authors.

In other words, creative people are more likely to be famous than non-creative people. I don't think their creativity has *anything* to do with their being depressed. Most depression is caused by a neurochemical imbalance--and this has absolutely no bearing on creativity. They are seperate phenomenons.

Hmmmm... You have made your point very convincingly .Then , what is Creativity ?,Although there are set definations available in dictionary and other places.
whats, your defination. How will you describe and define "Creativity "
    8. melindaville
Well, I think I've alreay described it (and this is a somewhat subjective term) that creativity is the need to create art--in whatever way that is, be it writing, art pieces, dance, theater, music, etc.

But creativity, as I suggested, IS a subjective term. You might think my creations are bunk--as I might think yours are. Therefore, you might not consider me to be a creative person at all--yet I believe I am.

I should also add that creativity need not only be applied to art. One can think creatively about absolutely anything. For example, my husband is an engineer--and he has creative ideas which he has developed into a successful business.

I agree, like art, creativity is subjective. What drives me to create is not what drives others. For me creating is like talking only I do it visually.
    10. melindaville
I totally agree with you, jafabrit. It's very subjective.

I feel that I am very creative and I'm not depressed at all. In fact, sometimes when I am feeling down if I do something creative it lifts my moods.

"feels alienated and misunderstood due to the perceived ignorance or neglect of others who do not understand him and the things he feels are important."
      HIM? HE?

This is the line which struck me. And probably sorrounding my initial question

      thanks

About this quoted comment from wikipedia about the tortured artist "feels alienated and misunderstood due to the perceived ignorance or neglect of others who do not understand him and the things he feels are important."

This applies to many people in all walks of life, genders, careers, cultures. I can't say in all the years working as an artist or with artists that I met too many displaying this mentality.

I actually feel more creative, the better mood I'm in. And I'm over 320 pages into writing my novel. I think it very much depends on the person.
    1. Adityavardhan
will you share something more about this novel
    2. ThriftShopRomantic
It's a humorous science fiction story. Tonally, it's a long the lines of Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy or maybe Terry Pratchett's writing, if you're familiar with that.

For now, I'm keeping the plotline a secret.

I'll be singing and dancing when it's finished, I think. Of course, finishing it off is always the easy part.

Getting someone who wants to publish the thing will be the trick.
