    What!

    Shocking!

Hyphens of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose but your context!

    This is an outrage!

How can civilization exist without the diplomacy-enhancing, word-bonding, hyphen?!

The squids will appreciate their ink saving efforts.

then what about my domain name?
  4. crkian
How will they write how a word is pronounced

Hyphens are not being eliminated; hyphens used in the spelling of a single word (such as bumble-bee and ice-cream) are being eliminated and the words either joined into a single word (bumblebee) or split into two (ice cream). I think that most of us were already writing them that way, anyway. Hyphens as punctuation are alive and well.

Well, I'm still using hyphens with some spelling, but that's because I rely on the Oxford American Dictionary on my computer. Even there I've noticed that few words use the dash. Interesting to learn that my frequent confusion might be due to changes in the language.

Didn't Hercules kill the hyphen a long time ago?

I've got 4 or 5 domains with hyphens in them, only because the ones without hyphens were taken .. Medieval-Site.com The-Lingerie-Site.com etc.

Hyphens will come back. Domain names need them!

NO! We love our - and apply sparingly whenever we can...

What about in Mathematics, +, X, / and then what? :0)

In my job (medical transcription) hyphens have been no-nos (hee hee) for awhile. You just smoosh the word together so intra-articular becomes intraarticular, etc. I like them in certain circumstances but I think they have been grossly misused in the past.

I refuse-to-be-intimidated. I will continue to use the hyphen anywhere-I-want.

Most likely Jack, so shall I.

I use the American Heritage dictionary a lot. The Oxford English Dictionary is mostly for academics and people who are writing for intellectual pursuits. I don't think it will affect everyday english that much, even in England.
    1. Nomadic
Yeah...the Oxford English Dictionary is for people who speak English, so I wouldn't worry.

Not the real, print dictionary they didn't. But at least they finally explained the darn thing. I rarely see it used in a context that fits the acronym, but now I might, someday, consider using it. The people I've asked didn't seem to know where it had come from and thus were simply sheep copying the word from strangers. Fie on them, I say!

oh my - i live by the hyphen - it is the water of grammatical fluidity - why it's the only thing that connects the unconnected. i am part of hyphen-nation!
alas - i'm dead without it.
the hyphen will always be with me.
drat oxford and all it's hoity-toities! can't even say that anymore without the hyphen.
it strikes me ... a plot.
curse you hillary and your oxford soul mate who is only your part-time soul mate.
    can't say that either.
i can not see the point in living anymore.
