Topics: death threats
I have a guestbook on my site and I received a serious death threat this morning on it. I have the IP address of the person who posted it and have reported it to the authorities. I am doing my own investigation on this and am checking all of my logs to find out what site referred this person to my site. If I find out that it was someone from this forum I am going to out you. Don't mess with me or you will be publicly shamed.

Frank, I'm afraid to say that this might come with the territory, given your URL and all. But that doesn't make it right. Have you considered notifying law enforcement authorities? (And which authorities would those be?)
-
Okay. My point about "might come with the territory" was simply this: the U.S. is full of nuts who can get mean when you stamp on their religion---or anything else. I think Zawadi mentioned having some experiences of this kind years ago, though she's started up her controversial political blogging again.

Just ignore it I once wrote a story about a team of archaeologists finding Jesus's foreskin and a Christian fundamentalist talkshow host in NZ sent me an email threatening to blow me up with Semtex. For about three weeks he went on and on about it on his radio show then someone else upset him and he forgot all about me.

A "serious death threat"? How do you know? In my previous profession I received a number of death threats, some serious (requiring police escorts) and some jerks blowing off steam. In my experience, it would be difficult to assess whether or not a death threat was "serious" based on a comment on a blog.
And then, of course, if the threat WAS perceived to be serious, attempting to threaten and antagonize someone in a public forum would be perhaps the worst possible means of response. If you seriously believe someone plans to kill you, then threatening to out them on a message board is a pretty weak and meaningless response; if you seriously believe that they'll see your response, you feed the danger in two ways: by showing that you're feeling powerless and by further irritating a dangerous person who has threatened your life.
If you're really worried, keep your mouth shut and let the experts handle it. If you're not really worried...well...then...why are we having this discussion? -
Hey, frank.
I do threat assessment and management for a living.
I looked at your guestbook, but the offending comment had already been deleted by you.
What was it about the threat that led you to believe it was "serious"?
Just out of curiosity, what things factored into your decision to delete the comment? I'm not challenging your decision here, just trying to get a little more information. -
How can a threat be serious online? Can someone find out exactly who and where you are to carry out any type of threat?
-
Frankunknown, this is terrible! I hope you find the perperator and get them sorted. I had a few threats on a forum once but the guy in question was mentally unwell and he swung from accusing me of castrating men, and wanting to rip my eyes out to being my friend. He is thankfull and amazingly very well now.
hopefully the threat is just some immature idiot and when they realise they have been caught they won't do it again. Have you reported them to aol or whoever it is that hosts their internet connection? -
I am amazed!
Given the way YOU talk to people, like you told me to "eat dick" in my shoutbox it's not surprising you ruffle feathers is it?
I had NOTHING to do with this sort of crap, I got better things to do than make stupid death threats on people but I am just pointing out, you have a "controversal" blog, you troll places like this and yet you show here how scared it makes you by veiedd threats of "outing" someone, someone who may not even come here.
Sorry to hear about the death threat, NO-ONE deserves that but as been said, nutters out there.
You stoke a fire you get burned.
Not saying you deserved it, just you don't exactly lead by example do you?
You stoke things up.
Hope you do get it sorted, BUT WHY they did it is more important so you can avoid it again.
Best of luck, and to whoever it could be "if" they read this, you are NEVER really anonymous online, you WILL get caught out.-
"Hope you do get it sorted, BUT WHY they did it is more important so you can avoid it again."
Now, we all know I'm no fan of franks blog. And this tends to lead me to believe that my expectation of anger and hatred would be more likely than the shame he hopes to elicit in his target audience.
That aside, you are saying that he should stop expressing himself because some one else **might** be sick enough to want to kill him for that expression. Heck I got a couple death threats over things that got said at howtocorp. I never took them as serious, but each has to come to their own road on that.
But I don't understand blaming the person who was threatened with death for the threat. Speech is speech. Even if it's disgusting. Even if it's puerile. Even if it's stupid. It's not justification for a death threat.
That's like saying the way a woman is dressed is justification for rape. -
Dane, I am not saying he desrved it or anything, just saying it would be good to find out WHY they said it.
I don't think he should not say what he wants to say, it's his blog, I don't care if he blogs more or not, just think knowing WHY someone would go that far is important. ;o)
I am NOT blaming anyone, I am saying WHAT you expect is often not what you see in reality in responses to what you say.
Piss people off and you don't expect them to say.. "hello mate" do you? -
Not so much that you are blaming him as that you are looking for the reasons in the wrong place. The reason someone leaves a death threat, is in the person making the threat, not the person receiving it. Mother Theresa received death threats.
I'm saying that nothing he has or could have said is the WHY. The WHY lies within the less than optimally functioning mind of the threatener. And that goes for whether it's "serious" or not.

I used to have a political blog, and some people didn't take to what I said, and was really given death threats. They arrived in the (snail) mail and the person who actually did it somehow had the names of all my family.
If you're worried call the authorities. I closed my blog personally and gave up trying to argue and debate anything politics, there are nutters out there for sure. -
Here's some things to consider:
Is there anyone you've mad angry lately that you actually know?
Are they serious death threats, or simple "You should die!" type of things?
Don't go around on forums saying "If I find out that it was someone from this forum I am going to out you. Don't mess with me or you will be publicly shamed." All that does it make you look like an angry person, and it can tempt the other person to take things further (assuming they are serious). That's a big no-no.
Have you actually reported them to the authorities?
As MadameX said, be quiet and let the authorities handle it (if you actually did inform them), they exist for a reason. -
Jut another comment I want to add.
The worst things you can do is talk about someone's God.
When you do this. You will be in for a fight. Death threats have come my way.
I wont stop speaking about what I believe again.
People have been killed for doing just this. I will never put my Family in harms way, but Frank, when you do this, believe me it's no joke man.
My advice to you is block the IP, and that was good you reported it.
Also, If you believe in what you are saying and feel compelled to blog about it, speak up publicly about it, etc... Are you ready for more responses like that (threats).
If not, stop now.
