Some states are approving same-sex marriages while others are banning them. Many supporters of same-sex marriages cite "separation of church and state" as their battle cry. Their reasoning is that the "church" defines marriage as being between one man and one woman.

With this being said, let's consider polygamy... Would it only be fair to allow someone to marry multiple partners? Maybe two men and one woman? Three men? Three women? Or whatever?(Who knows what possibilities there are.)

Note: Before someone starts to whine,
(1) I do believe in one man and one woman.
(2) My purpose is to make people think.
And
(3) I am doing research for possible blog post. It is better than just shooting my mouth off.

Thank you for your input and opinions.

I have been avoiding a blog post on gay marriage... After some reading on Thomas Jefferson's "Wall of Separation," I got to thinking... If same-sex supporters use "Separation of Church and State" as their argument.. why not take it one step further? Why not question the idea of turning the "church's" definition upside down and throw it out the window?

so then where do you draw the line on how many people one can marry?

then you must consider the ethics behind such an act are they all willing participants, what if one decides to leave the relationship.

      what about alimony?

there are quite a few implications regarding this topic

its then that we come back to the argument between right and privilege

now as i understand it (call me narrow minded) americans think that pretty much everything is a right, and more to the point it is their right

i follow the belief that everything of mine is a privilege, that it is subject to change at any point in time

I did not know that. However, my thoughts are to look closer at the ideals about defining marriage...

      Thanks for the info....

I think legal marriage should be seperate from religious marriage. I really don't care who marries who or how many, more power to them as long as it's all consenting.

I personally think polygomy is worse than same-sex marriage. I think the entire purpose of marriage is to commit yourself to one person, it include MONOgomy and a vow between two people. There is nothing stopping anyone from having a harem of girlfriends and boyfriends, but honestly polygomy is quite the oposite of marriage by any standard (be it "church" or "state")...

Same sex marriage abides by the SAME things as opposite-sex marriage. Monogomy and commitment to ONE person...the ONLY single difference is the gender. The comparison is totally ridiculous, and a cop out for people with not real basis to make their objection to gay marriage from.
    1. becthomasphotograp
That is just a view point from one religious standing not the view point from any standpoint as you suggest, some religions say polygamy is the only way to commit.

So long as there are appropriate laws in place to protect every spouse involved in a polygamous marriage equally and clearly, then I see no problem with polygamy.

I wouldn't personally enter into a polygamous marriage, but then again I can barely handle to the one spouse I have, so... But if otehrs are happy in that arrangement, I see nothing morally or legally wrong with it.

(Of course, the obvious needs to be stated, laws need to protect equally, and all partners need to be consenting adults).

I am tempted to agree based on freedom of contract... but what would greedy investment bankers due with such lax restraint?
    2. Anok
Do you mean with regards to finances, inheritance, estates and so forth of a polygamous marriage? There would have to be very clearly defines laws protecting spouses involved in a polygamous marriage and strict laws about how businesses can handle legalities of polygamous marriages. (With regards to loans, insurance policies, mortgages and so forth)

How they would do that is beyond me. I think that's one of the main reasons it's not legal, truthfully. It's just too darn complicated.

The rest of us will end up as their eunuch servants

*agit8r is being rediculous for the sake of it now*

I am with Anok one relationship is hard enough to work at
my biggest problem with polygamy is the inequality of it all but each to his own
being gay isnt a lifestyle choice but polygamy is you cant compare the two

I actually wouldn't lump inequaltiy and polygamy together. Some polygamious relationships are not equal but others are. I have actually known non-morman or any religion for that matter) polygamious relationships that work very well and are quite equal.

    Marriage = hell
Polygamy = hell times however many are participating
    1. nothingprofound
Suzie, I admire your clear objectivity on the subject of marriage.
  8. nothingprofound
I say anything goes as long as we're talking about consenting adults and laws are established to protect all parties involved.
