All the good blogs have a great niche. A way to draw in visitors and keep them coming back for more. I'm desperate, people. I admit it. So I'm having a contest of sorts. Describe a fantastic niche. It doesn't have to be in use on your blog. It could be one you saw on another blog. Best niche idea gets a write up in my blog and a permanent "Likeable Link" to the site of your choice. Contest ends October 31, 2007.

I'm curious- are you looking for a niche you would then consider adopting?

It seems the best niche writers are usually already passionate about their topics, no matter what they are. It's easy to continue blogging about what you love. I don't know if that's something someone else can suggest for you.

Not that you won't likely get some very creative suggestions! :-)

      I agree!

Of course I would consider adopting. Why bother having a contest. Then again, I'm not the type to steal something somebody wants to make all their own. I would probably tweak the best idea to make it more original if I thought it could work. Personally, I think blogging about what one loves isn't enough. Ya gotta have a gimmick...or so the song goes. The real point of the contest is I thought the replies would make a good story. That's why I said up front that the best idea would get a write up and permanent link. Hope this clarifies the contest and encourages others to post real ideas.

Gotta say, I agree with Jenn (ThriftShopRomantic). You might get a good niche idea, but will you have the requisite combination of knowledge and passion for such a niche? Next to the contest you might want to do some serious brainstorming about what you know and like.

I hope you didn't misunderstand me-- wasn't implying anything about your motivations by asking the question I did.

I think maybe a "niche" then isn't what you're looking for as much as a "hook".

Blogging takes a lot of effort and time-- so I still stand by the fact you're going to need to enjoy your topic. But if we knew an area of genuine interest for you, finding a fun and unique hook to extend from that might be more the way to go.

      Just a suggestion anyway.

so many do this, but at least it's an idea. You're in the lead, David.

hmm... I have no gimmicks, but I do have a number of regular readers. No, I'm no John Chow, but that's okay, too.

How about this for a niche - just be you and write about whatever strikes your fancy that day. After all, there is no one else quite like you, right?

What about a niche blog about niche blogs or ideas for niche blogs. So a niche blog a niche ideas for niche blogging

I'm dizzy, but I appreciate the creativity. By the way, I put a shoutbox on my blog for the contest. Now you can enter and promote your own blog at the same time. Or, just keep the entries coming here. It's all good.

Some of the TOP blogs are solely about ONE popular,of the moment celebrity or better still a celebrity couple.

Shelf life may be limited but if you catch a newly created celebrity on their first hint of fame you can take the domain names and be ranked 1st in search engine.

I googled a celeb couple in UK and it was a blogspot blog that was number 1.

I like to look at things from different angles and explore how they're related, so my thinking comes pretty close to what Stoneman wrote above. In my opinion, defining a niche in advance and trying to fit your blog articles into it may be a mistake; you risk shortchanging yourself of the whole creative discovery process that's such an important part of writing. I would like to see more bloggers write about content that they're really interested in, and as Stoneman says, passionate about, rather than tag themselves with a niche.

Over time, your writing and your readers reactions to it can teach you a lot, and some themes will emerge that you can continue to explore. These themes may or may not fit the definition of a traditional "niche" -- but they're yours, you own them and can do what you want with them, and I think your writing will develop a more expansive quality and broader appeal than it would otherwise.

I realize this is contrary to the prevalent thinking around the net about blogging and how we should go about it, but I think it's fair to say that that advice is often coming from niche- and marketing-oriented writers explaining how they got where they are. As such, it's advice certainly worth considering, but maybe as just one element of your plans for your blog, rather than the starting point or the whole story.

It's an intersting subject, though, and I certainly don't want to diminish it in any way ... I would just hate for it to become a limitation or liability for anyone. Somewhere recently, I saw someone refer to their blog as fitting into a "random niche" -- and, you know, I thought that might be even MORE interesting....

Humm, I've seen a lot of gimmicks most of them bad.
I think passion is enough if you have a certain amount of charisma and you can articulate it through the blog.

I agree with the thrift shopper.

Then again it is all personal opinion.

I say, "A niche blog would be a concept that you have passion for. Something that you somewhat are knowledgable about. You can add ideas in offering products such as books to reference or products that revolve around that niche topic. It's not really that hard to think of niches, if you clear your mind and the first thing that comes to your mind, maybe you can create that niche blog. Then start researching about your niche. Write your own niche topic articles on your concept. Voila, niche blog created."

"Don't forget to SEO it, monetize it, post it, ping it and blog catalog it!"
