There are many books that are just displayed in shelves and not read.
Does Catcher in the Rye belong to this genre?

No. There are many high school students that are still required to read this. Actually it's a classic. It might seem like it sits on the shelves, but only because so many people have already read it.

"Some books are to be kept in shelves
      Some others can be chewed
Still others can eaten, vommited or shitted."
      Bacon

Ok that is not his exact quote, but it is something like that.
I think Catcher belongs to first group

Oh. You must not like the book. =)
  2. jims
No, I really loved this book. I did my Post grad thesis on it. Read it four times cover to cover.Just that you need to be a really dull person to enjoy it.
    1. ariwat
Oh, don't say that! I'm sure you aren't dull at all. A dull person is one who chooses to stay ignorant.

    Lol

loooks like the book has some great fan following. It is even higher than Paulo Coelho's Alchemist and is placed just below Da Vinci Code

    See Wikipedia:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_books

Thats way to high for a book that no one hardly reads

But come on, it has got to be higher than Da Vinci Code. I'm going to go on a limb and say that book was pure garbage.
    2. ariwat
Why? Because the ideas in it were eerily similar to The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail?
    3. jims
Book might be garbage, but I do feel sorry for Holden though
    4. ariwat
He might've meant The Da Vinci Code was garbage, jims.

I was actually talking about the Da Vinci Code. And I thought the plot was ok, the writing was rigid, repetitive and predictable. But that's just me, don't take it personally if you liked the book. I don't like the Harry Potter books either, but them I have bigger issues with.

Nope. Don't even know what it's about

But I've heard the title too many times.
    1. jims
Its about growing up in a world that is too 'phoney'
    2. freshtunesfinland
Jims, what did you address in your post grad thesis? Just curious.

And I've also read Catcher in the Rye many times, and the rest of Salingers books. I like the writing style, but Catcher in the Rye is pretty much the only of Salingers books that has gained appreciation.

I love J.D Salinger's writings. The Catcher in the Rye is an example of an outsider's interesting view about the world. There's a Holden Caulfield in all of us one way or the other
    1. jims
It reminds me of Albert Camus "Outsider".

As for Da Vinci Code, well its a nice story. Go read it to a a five year old kid. No one else is going to believe it.
  7. trailofpen
    No, it's a great book.
    1. jims
Da Vinci Code is a great fiction, but difficult to really believe in the code and all that...If Dan Brown never insisted on the books so called truths then I would have loved it better
    2. trailofpen
I'm not talking about the Da Vinci Code.

freshtunesfinland, my thesis was about censorship and book burning cases related to the Catcher in the rye and how the cover of the book managed changed people perception about the book
    1. freshtunesfinland
That sounds interesting. What did you study, ie. what field was your thesis in?

I haven't read A Catcher in the Rye since I was in high school in the mid 1980's. I thought it was a pretty good book, but a bit dated. It's pretty accessible and easy to read. It's not very long. I would recommend taking it from the shelf and reading it on occasion.
    1. jims
Yeah, it is something of an old world stuff. Is there any new book that is something similar to it?
  10. celticmusicfan
Well the book became very controversial in 1980. the guy who shot John Lennon was reading THAT book.
    1. jims
Well what about Hitler reading the Bible.;-)
  11. celticmusicfan
The same irony why Hitler love listening to Classical music especially that of Wagner. And I love Wagner ;-)
    1. jims
      That makes you dangerous :-)

Just wanted to read similar books like catcher, any other books like that?
    1. celticmusicfan
You can try William Goldman's The Temple of Gold. It's the same kind of story.
    2. freshtunesfinland
You've probably went through the other american 50's writers right? Like Heller's books. Even besides Catch-22, his books are entertainingly witty and well-crafted, in my opinion.
  13. celticmusicfan
Yes they belong to the same era. I would also suggest On The Road by Jack Kerouac if you are into beatniks.
    1. jims
Jack Kerouac's On the Road was good but it lacks wit
  14. jims
I loved Catch 22. It was a thick book, but I read it in one go.

I was looking for the name of a book that was about the columbine tragedy. The book was published in 2001 I believe. It was somewhat similar to the catcher. I tried googling it , but didn't get it.

    Anyone knows its name.

I don't know if you're talking about A Separate Peace by John Knowles. But it's also a good book .
    2. ariwat
A Separate Peace is an excellent book! It's kind of sad near the end, but it's worth it.
  15. jims
William Goldman's The Temple of Gold
I haven't heard of that, thanks celticmusicfan, I will try that
  16. celticmusicfan
    You are welcome
  17. freshtunesfinland
I actually think I know what your talking about jims, but I can't think of the title. I'll let you know if I find it.
    1. jims
Something to do with God...I remember reading lots of swear words
  18. jims
Who wrote Separate Peace? when was it written
    1. ariwat
John Knowles - but yeah, I realized the book is also kind of old published in 1959, so about 8 years later from Catcher in the Rye. Well, I dunno. But it's still a good book.
  19. jims
1959..that was the time when all was well with earth. There was no space for anomics back then..

    Ok now I have two
William Goldman's The Temple of Gold
    and John Knowles Separate Peace
