I have 2 digital cameras and they started out working fine and taking hundreds of pics before they needed new batteries. After a yr. or less, the cameras say "low batteries" and shut down after taking only about 20 pics or less. I have tried rechargeable batteries, one time use batteries made for digital cams, as well as regular alkaline batteries.

Has anyone had a similar problem?

btw-one is a Kodak easy share and the other is an HP

I recommend CANON with rechargable AA batteries. (I have 4 spare AA rechargable cells and a charger. It works great).

This is my 3rd camera and I am pretty happy with this.

I will draw portraits of people instead of taking pics before I will buy a 3'rd camera, heh heh.

I usually end up dropping or flooding my camera within a year. Like everything made today, they are designed to break or "wear out" in a certain period of time.

I thought about that, but I don't use my cameras much and don't think they should be doing this so early and they haven't had any trauma either.

I just started having this same problem this weekend - at first I just thought it was bad batteries but then went through all of the same battery changes, rechargeables, etc... even tried blowing out the compartment with canned air... only dif is, now, mine shuts off immediately after turning on... it was working fine just a day or two ago. Very frustrating - the camera is just over a year old.

So someone else feels my pain! I am furious. This shouldn't be happening.

Well it should say on the front of it "kodak C 433 or c 633, something like that, well if you have one, throw it away LOL it is known for eating batteries like peanuts, as for the HP cameras same thing, they work for a while then go all anal on you..
I myself know nothing about digital cameras and taking pictures, I point and shooooooot ... my partner is the camera freak, so I just asked him, yup truth be known I know nothing what I just typed I just took dictation.

I hope for once my partner is wrong as it totally sucks, though he is a camera freak, goodness me it took him 6 months of "investigation's" to get the camera back pack he has now, lets not talk about how much "investigating" it took him to get the camera he has, he has just decided to make a photo blog, not a lot there but hey, pblog.wagsplace.com

have the charging contacts got dirty? are the rechargables recharging when they're set to recharge? in my experience, 'throw away' batteries don't last very long at all but they do get you out of a tight spot if you loose all battery power out in the field.

Otherwise I wouldn't bother with them. Using features like preview and deletion of pictures taken will also use up loads of power - try taking pictures with screen off (if that's possible) and reviewing / deleting on your pc.

Oh and I understand that the process of transferring photos direct from camera to pc can also drain power so better to remove card and plug into pc separately again.

Hope that all helps and you're able to take some great photos soon.

I don't think dirt on the charging contact is an issue, but it's definitely something I will check into.

I had this problem before. Did you get 'new' rechargeable batteries? They aren't indefinitely rechargeable.
    1. calais50
      Yes I did. Same thing

Have you tried using Lithium non rechargeable batteries? Normal alkaline batteries do actually damage some compact cameras and Lithium based batteries are, in most cases the solution to this common problem.
