An interesting little article I came across ...

Two sexes 'sin in different ways'

A Catholic survey found that the most common sin for women was pride, while for men, the urge for food was only surpassed by the urge for sex.

The report was based on a study of confessions carried out by Fr Roberto Busa, a 95-year-old Jesuit scholar.

The Pope's personal theologian backed up the report in the Vatican newspaper.

"Men and women sin in different ways," Msgr Wojciech Giertych, theologian to the papal household, wrote in L'Osservatore Romano.

"When you look at vices from the point of view of the difficulties they create you find that men experiment in a different way from women."

Msgr Giertych said the most difficult sin for men to face was lust, followed by gluttony, sloth, anger, pride, envy and greed.

For women, the most dangerous sins were pride, envy, anger, lust, and sloth, he added.

I read that too. I think that it's pretty obvious that men and women would 'sin' differently because of their differing make up. It was entertaining that they talked about modern 'sins' too, like creation of poverty.

On the whole I don't get the whole 'sin' thing. Why make a being and then say but you can't feel any of those things that will be natural to you? It's like beating a dog with a stick for chasing cats. If humans never 'sinned' or had any 'sinful' feelings, surely humans would just so boringly perfect, full of love and good deeds which is all very nice but seriously unrealistic.

Well first of, sin is sin. In the eyes of God it all looks the same color. Personally, even if we do sin differently from each other, the main concern should be knowing the sins we have within ourselves as individuals. To do studies on differences like this may only feeds more into having the wrong attitude. Some may see it and start comparing. Comparing with can easily turn to pride, envy, anger... Got to be careful.

I believe we can sin differently while having the potential to sin the same. OK so we have the physical features that obviously separate men from women, however in nature we are all the same. I truly believe that. There may be "popular" sins within each sex but we all experience the same, just a different order. Doesn't mean we now should be more conscious of falling into those listed on top. We will start to live unbalanced, and somewhat ignorant or should I say temporarily blinded by the not-so-popular ones that in the longterm can cause serious damage.

It's an article that should be read lightly.

First, I'm not Catholic, so I don't really care what the Pope says. Second, men and women are inherently different to an extent so we're going to behave differently on any level. Third, even if it is true what bearing does this have on my life?

Some of us, of course, are too pooped out on the Pope to think of these "sins" that way. I should send him a box of homemade chocolates so he could enjoy my little sins. I'm sure the confessional could taste much sweeter.

@LynneaUrania - don't waste them on the Pope, send them my way yum yum Uh oh gluttony...In for a penny, in for a pound, that's what I say!

"For women, the most dangerous sins were pride, envy, anger, lust, and sloth, he added"

It is a matter of application... ultimately they all stem from selfishness. and all of them are equally dealt with by both men and women... each of those sins may be manifested differently based on how they emotionally deal with things. but each has its own pitfalls for both sexes.

This is why the concept of "Love God with all your heart" and "Love your neighbor as your self" are all inclusive. each of those "categories" are just boxes that we put particular types of "selfish" actions. If you can truly learn to be selfless then all of these types of behavior tend to dissapear...
that is why focusing on a particular "vice" is a hopeless endeavor... it all stems from selfishness.. fix the root of the problem not the symptom.

I find the essentializing nature of the article more disturbing than anything--"men" and "women" as the "obvious" categories, without considering, for example, that it might be easier to confess certain sins if that is what is expected. In other words, if women are constantly told that "women get jealous easily" then of course this will be a more recognizable sin.

But what if you don't fit so easily into those categories?

As soon as half the Catholic church removes their hands from the crotches of young boys I will give a shit.

It doesn't really matter, all sin is the same in God's eyes anyway.

Actually the all sin is the same thing isn't true in my opinion, at least from a Christian standpoint. Those who insist all sins are equal are surprised to read Jesus' words to Pontius Pilate: "The one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin" (John 19:11). That sin was worse than Pilate's.

Some sins are also greater because they bring harsher consequences to others. Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, John said, and God's law convicts me even for thinking of killing my neighbor. But if my sin remains in my heart and doesn't lead to action, my neighbor's life is spared. I would hardly say, "Thinking of killing him is just as bad as doing it," nor should I say, "Since I've already murdered him in my heart, I might as well murder him on his driveway!"

James was more precise: "Whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it" (James 2:10). He didn't say all sins are equal. He said God's law is an unbroken whole. To sin at any point makes one a lawbreaker.

Sin begins in the heart but the actions could be different. Some sins are sexual and some are attitudes but ll begin in the heart.

wow i just dont understand people who are talking about sin in 2009..
  12. footiam
Think so. One ate the apple; the other didn't.
  13. janizarzagon
Of course. Each and every one of us is unique.

Yes. Thats why they say Men are from Mars & Women are from venus
  15. MrCheeseburger
Men usually sin 57, while women sin 34. Men get 0.838 for the answer and women get 0.559. So yes, they sin differently.
  16. FatX
Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that men and women chose different sins, than to say they sin differently?
    1. Thundercatt99
Didn't really think about that ... But probably ...

The real question isn't whether women and men sin differently, but whether or not each individual has found salvation for their sins. Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ and He took all of our sins upon Himself and became the ultimate sacrifice.
