My S.O. is always generalizing, his favorite thing to say is women can't drive. When i bring up the fact that men cause more accidents than women he says "yeah yeah what ever".
what is your opinion? do you think men drive better than women?

I dunno - I am a woman and I can drive anything. ANYTHING - and I have... I've driven trucks, winnebagos, cars of all types and speeds.
I drive better than most people - except my eyesight - which was expected is getting worse (I have always had extremely bad eyes, and the prognosis was early on to get bad... I'm as farsighted as you can get and still get contacts... LOL!) so night driving is getting to be more difficult for me in unlit areas...
But --- I can outdrive almost any male I've met on a race track. I dunno.
I think driving is an instinct.
Of understanding how everything fits together: the other drivers, the way the car operates, the way traffic is moving - and the road plus the conditions.
So there are good drivers of every sex....
And maybe a few drivers who have sex while driving. -
there exceptions to every rule. Men are proven to be better navigators though - we have a nickel deposit above our noses which acts like a natural compass.
Please don't ask me for a reference as I just pulled that out of my ass. -
Generally yes. There are exceptions. I know horrible male drivers and good female drivers. The reason is simply that women usually are more distracted by there phone, radio, person next to them ect.

NONSENSE. Utterly untrue stereotype. Precisely the type of sexist rubbish men convince THEMSELVES of... to deflect the fact that they take more risks, race, are harder on their vehicles, have more accidents, and have higher insurance.
I won't even eat in my car, nor do I pick up my cell. It just rings, and my life is worth more than whomever thinks they need to talk to me right that second.
Over the years, I have been rear-ended in commmute traffic three times by men, one of whom was SHAVING. I've seen men reading books and working on laptops in their cars. My ex used to eat with both hands, change CDs, gab on the phone while he swerved around, and it scared me to death. I actually GOT OUT OF THE car once at a stoplight, telling him if he wanted to risk his OWN life that was his affair, but he did not have the right to risk MINE.
This is about stupidity level, not gender. -
Polish statistics say that women are the reason of more percentage of accidents than man (that is crosschecked with a % of drivers by sex)... total numbers are of course better for women...
So yes men drive better, and it's not sexism - it's sociology.
but on the other hand... if a woman has good coordination/orientation skills, she will be better than man, because less testosterone driven
not fighting on the road, just driving...

Maybe. When I've gotten into accidents, the person that hit me was always a woman. Coincidence? I don't know.

The word "better" is subjective. Do you mean that they have a superior ability to weave through traffic cones on a course? That they have some kind of testosterone-fuelled superiority that allows them to leap tall dump trucks in a single bound? Or, by better, do you mean that men are safer drivers?
Unfortunately for those of you who are into stereotyping, the facts go against you: women cause fewer accidents than men and insurance companies...which employ armies of statisticians to study this sort of thing...therefore give women of all ages preferential rates. This, then, would indicate that women are safer drivers than men and by my definition of "better," this makes women as a group better drivers than men. -
No, there are more male "leadfeet" than female ones, in my experience.
However, I will say this: the most consistently bad drivers are those who purchase BMWs. -
Women tend to look at themselves in the overhead rearview mirror fairly often, checking if they are having a bad hair day or something. Men tend to look down and pull at their trousers and underpants fairly often, loosening the tugs on their crotch. Both talk often on cellphones. Woman maybe more than men. But men are more likely to be diverted by some female pulling up alongside in traffic.
I'd say they are about even. I didn't learn to drive until I got out of the army. I quit driving 7 years ago. (Couldn't afford repairs/insurance on my '82 Ford Escort.) Which is kind of a downer. But I've read non-drivers on average have a three-year-longer lifespan.
Back to women and men drivers. As stated, I think fairly even. But if I'm hitchhiking, and a woman driver and a man driver stopped at the same time and both offered me a ride...uh, I'd go with the woman. Prejudiced I guess. -
No--I think good driving comes from a combination of having common sense, having good reaction time, and being considerate. I think that both men and women can do well in these categories . . . or do poorly.
Most people are poor drivers, imo. Most are too self-absorbed to be really good drivers because good driving skills mean you have to consider other people constantly. -
