most people learn from life's lessons -
wisdom is different than just knowledge. It's like applied knowledge.

What do think?

Any insight to share

Sure, that is until they get too old and stubborn from old age.
    1. lisleman
stiff stubborn - not good but you can be that at any age

Wisdom comes from experience, which in most cases comes with age. Thing is not everyone learns from theirs or another persons experiences. So at times a younger person might be wiser than a more mature person about certain things. So i might be wiser in computer related issues than my mom, but with life in general she's much wiser than i and i often consult with her about things concerning that!
    1. lisleman
yes I agree - wisdom is something that you don't learn in class or in a book (or blog).
  3. tinatina
They should be gaining wisdom. If not, they might be stupid.
    1. lisleman
if you don't learn from experience then hopefully you had fun anyways.

it depends on what you want to call wisdom. some people believe that the only thing one needs is to live life to the fullest, which not many do. inexperienced, stupid, feckless people sometimes lead ostensibly better or fuller lives because they're not bogged down by rules or any other forms of inhibitions. on the other hand, there are those who have never had to face difficult problems because they've been prudent all their lives. i'm not sure what qualifies as wisdom and if wisdom is actually acquired with age.

your words here have thought behind them - so I would guess you might not have written or expressed these thoughts years ago. My question is what gave you the wisdom of these words? It is not defined easily. One of those, you know it when you see it type items.
    2. archiegottlieb
i don't know. maybe it was indeed time. i can't imagine what i would have said 10 years ago; i'd like to think that it would have been different, but somehow i doubt it. i don't actually feel like i've grown wiser since then.

i'm more prudent now for sure. while it may seem clear that prudence is acquired with time, it doesn't definitively and directly answer the question of whether prudence is an articulation of wisdom. i'd rather say that it's more of a refraction of some deeper fear. but fear could be conceived of as a type of wisdom, that is, a certain foreknowledge of one's action that prevents one from acting in immoral or pernicious ways...argh! i'm tired. this could go on forever and yet never reach any absolute conclusion.

Indeed wisdom is an applied knowledge. Wisdom cannot be confined to any one time or place. And when We find Wisdom in unexpected situation regardless of time, it is more meaningful. It is more wonderful finding a precious stone in a garbage heap than in jewelry stores. This awakening is purer and its effect is different. Wisdom is more beneficial if found in unexpected places and extra ordinary situations. This is only I can say of Wisdom, who has another name....

Wisdom and cynicism both. And many times, mistake one for the other.

"Do most people gain wisdom with age?"

Depends on if you can erase what you've been taught... Wisdom comes from learning from your own mistakes and making your own conclusion from them.

people do gain wisdom with age, but then stop attaining wisdom with a "i know it all" attitude. But if u observe great leaders they sought wisdom until their last breath.Even a small baby can silently leave u a lesson-

Wisdom is the reward for the things we lose with age.
    Like, bladder control.
    1. lisleman
like that one (the wisdom - not loss of bladder)
    2. aningeniousname
That would be awful, really awful.
  10. roentarre
More people are getting demented with ageing
  11. edgecrosser
I don't think so, very few i guess.
  12. xmarks
Gain wisdom but can't find their pants
    1. roentarre
Maybe not able to hid the dangler beneath the pants?
    2. lisleman
Oh the here after - as in what was I here after. The key to life is finding the keys.
  13. Hangingonahyphen
Yes. I think so. You can only say you truly know things if you've been there and done that.
  14. jafabrit
Some do, some don't. So no I don't think one gains wisdom by virtue of aging, but by how they have experienced life and learned from it.
  15. siralmo
    not always
  16. LynneaUrania
They only grow wiser if they learn to dream, to be quiet, and to forgive.
  17. bizmashups
Wisdom is indeed applied knowledge. Wisdom cannot be confined to any one time/age.

If looking back at all the mistakes you've made and knowing how never to repeat them is wisdom ... I should be on a mountain top espousing my deep thoughts to the masses!!!
  19. dcarroll
I hope that people gain wisdom with age. I keep getting older. Maybe that is the one good aspect of aging.
  20. Floormodel
    the lucky ones do.
  21. amrhima
Depends on how you use time, if you are eager to learn and to gain wisdom then you might be much better than someone twice your age, also if you learn from the wisdom of others you do much better.
  22. bloggore
    Information...Yes... Wisdom... not necessarily
  23. SomeMuslimMan
I think people gain wisdom by rolling into expirences and intellectual advances; I mean using their minds to think. It's not necessarily that it has to do with aging because you might meet people older than you but they have no wisdom and vice versa.

I elaborated on this topic over my blog couple of months ago in the post entitled "Grow UP"; welcome to check if you want.
  24. HollytheHousewife
No I know a few that grow dumber by the second

"Bodily decrepitude is wisdom." Take it from an old man: old men know nothing.

Besides: The wiser you think you are, the more life fools you.
    1. bloggore
That WAS profound... but well said :-)

The main thing I am learning is acceptance. Capital "A". The biggest hurdle is learning acceptance of self. I have life-long been open to what others might offer. I have been curious-driven all of my known life. I came to being in a socially conservation time here in America, the South. Racism was a given. Japanese and Germans were evil personified. A woman was the nest provider. Homosexuality was not a known. (Or certainly never discussed, either by elders or childhood friends.)

Much changed. Very much in my 70 years. And change I always welcomed. I never understood the basis for automatic prejudice or caste-typing in the first place. I always wanted to know more.

So have I grown in wisdom. Yes. I do know more. I accept more than at any point in my life. Even death, which for decades I saw only as n abstraction - one to deal with later,I face and accept now.

As stated at the beginning, my main hurdle in acceptance has been of self. That I am neither bad nor good. I have neither a closed heart nor a truly open one. Fear still resides. But without the strength it once possessed. I pray for acceptance to my Higher Power (whom I choose to call "Love") daily. And feel I am getting there. I AM me. And to be me is more and more okay.

Is this wisdom? I choose to say yes. Has it taken time? Yes, many, many years. I am grateful for what I have today.

Haven't you ever heard the saying "there's no fool like an old fool"?
  28. dosox
No, in my opinion if it gains from age.. It is experience. Wisdom is perception of understanding.

Question: do most people gain wisdom with age?

Answer: IMHO wisdom and age are not necessarily linked, for some young people are very wise and some older people are not. IMHO knowledge and life experience are not necessarily linked to wisdom either, for their are many people who have a great deal of knowledge and who have had many life experiences but remain foolish. IMHO none of us can become wise, unless or until we "awake" and that "bodhi moment" can occur at any age.

These are wise quotes of Siddhāttha Gotama; the Buddha. It doesn't matter which faith you follow or if don't particularly consider yourself a religious person, you will find truth in his words. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTsb-woP3jI&feature=related

Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.
    -- Buddha

Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.
