If everyone loves others doing good to them, why dont they do good to others?

What's the exact definition of "good" that everyone can agree on?
Most people (I'll rule out the obvious sociopaths here) do want to do good, but their belief as to what will be good for someone else may be misguided, misunderstood or horribly flawed. This can probably explain most of the governmental screw ups around the world, for example.
