i think it is wiser to exchange links with sites related to your niche. Preferably i try to do this. But there are some sites that i like and i don't mind at all adding them in my blog roll. how about you?

i think is good to have as many link as possible

thanks for the response. But i read it is better to have links which are related to your niche..Having blogs with the same topic linking with each other can help build Page Ranks.
  2. clockworkwar
I would but only a few want them on mine
    1. identikit

Not really, it depends on the contents. The usual stuff which is no hatred,no porn,no spam etc

I've never asked for link exchanges ... my philosophy is, if I see a blog I like, I'll note it somehow - bloglines, Blog Explosion's Blogmarks, Technorati favorites, or even Blog Catalog's Neighborhood... I'll also drop by with a comment where appropriate... and if the other blogger reciprocates with a visit/comment/link, then great, but if not, no biggie on my side. I obviously am not one of those who wants to build 1000's of meaningless links, LoL! In the end, it's up to you, what you are looking for, what are your priorities, y'know?

I think it is something related to my blog would be better. But if someone specifically ask...well, I can't say no unless it is pornography, gambling, or violence.

LadyInfluence, I'm in agreement with you. I do include a few links to sites not quite related to my niche but that I really like, but for the most part, people going to my site are probably looking for something-- an answer to a decorating or shopping problem. So presenting them with links for something entirely different won't do them much of a service. And I've found that site's I've link traded with, which tend to have a strong audience overlap, really do send traffic my way.

If links are unrelated, it ends up being very hit or miss.

Link trading less discriminately would probably work more effectively with blogs with broad subject matter.

I only link stuff that (1) I like and (2) is related. The second condition is because my blogs are narrower in focus. For me the issue is not just backlinks but the reader's experience and my integrity.

My philosophy on links looks a lot like willow's. If a site relates to mine in some way and I find it useful, informative, or entertaining, then I might add it to my blogroll. I don't solicit them or ask for a link in return. The links I add improve my blog. On the other hand, I will ask someone's permission to put their link on my site if I'm afraid they might not appreciate the association. I don't add links just because I expect reciprocation, and I would thank someone for adding me to their site, but it would not mean an automatic reciprocation from me. I'm a link snob?
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
Not at all. I think you're proceeding very sensibly. Stoneman said it well, it's the reader's experience and the blogger's integrity that's at stake. It's good to take linking seriously.
    2. legbamel
I never thought about asking anyone if they minded a link from me. It hadn't crossed my mind that someone would be upset to find themselves mentioned somewhere. Then again, almost all of my links are in positive reviews of a site as I write about useful or interesting information that I've run across.

I don't ask for links and I don't link to something irrelevant to my site. It's a lot more exciting (to me, at least) to get a "natural" link because of what you've written rather than because you asked for one.
    3. vixious
To clarify this point, I would not link a site negatively. Anyone who has ever read one of my posts is aware of this. I'm sure. However, my blog is a Christian blog, pure and simple and makes no excuse or hides from being such. I would never mind putting a link on my site that is not decidedly religious commentary if I feel it relates to my blog and the message. I do understand, however, that not everyone may wish to have their blog associated with a Christian blog. So, if I were going to add a site that was not about the Christian religion, then I would out of courtesy to the site owner ask their permission to do so. In most cases, I realize there would be no problem, but I just see no reason to create enemies out of misunderstandings.
  9. FemmedeBat
    No.

    I think I'm a link snob, too.
  10. Enlight
I link travel blogs in their own section on my travel blog and other blogs I like on another section on my links.

I don't link money making blogs, blogs that are only based on making money, I really don't like tech blogs either.
  11. WokeupToday
I prefer to connect with just the sites I like and I would prefer that only those that like my sites connect with them.
  12. alexhar
I am not sure about what search engines prefer. There seems to be indication that they prefer sites with relevant links..thought I am not sure how they do that. From a purely audience perspective, if I wrote an blog with a particular theme, I would logically want to include links only on that theme...for the sake of my readers.
  13. Scorpio12
I only link relevant content that I like. But never fear, because if I read your content that can't be linked but I like it, then I'll leave a comment. As for someone linking me? I don't trip on it...
  14. ladyinfluence
    thanks ddave..
  15. PhilipHarris
I keep links related to my bog-although I cover many topics from spiritual to climate change-they are all related anyway-I do feel it better to keep links on topic and to send people to sites that have similar or contrasting views. Since my site is called ALL THINGS THAT MATTER I keep the links tied to important issues affecting our lives.
  16. ladyinfluence
great! i do a lot of researching in increasing my PR for all my blogs and it seems i get the same message, Link with the same Niche is a better option than just accepting links from all types of niches. thanks thriftshopromantic
  17. ianternet
no I only grab equivalent and quality

so I will not accept a PR under 2 since I am a PR 2 and I will not accept a cooking site when mine is about success on line
    1. alexhar
I woudl say that's technically very "snooty".
    2. clioandme
Not accepting a PR under 2 doesn't make sense to me, unless you have a limited amount of space. Of course, if someone had a PR 5 and used your thinking, you wouldn't get on that blog, no matter how relevant or good your own was.
  18. VioletsVintage
I linked to a few sites that are not about jewelry or other topics related to my blog. I linked to sites I liked or I thought had helpful content. One site is about finances that I really enjoy reading and wanted to share with the people who stop by my blog.
  19. coffeesage
I get emails everyday day asking to exchange links. Most have nothing to do with my area of interest and therefore I will decline graciously. I've never once ask any site to link to me or back to me. I do generally stay within my field but if by chance I can justify the addition of a link here or there that does not run along the same subject as mine, I will. Those are few and far in between.
  20. neoauteur
I would add all the blogs that I like.
  21. nanciesweb
I plan on keeping anything that's no more than PG. I have a variety of interests so there would be very few links that I would decline.

Although, there may come a point where I just have way too many links as a result. I don't know what my policy would be then.
  22. cstrikedish
Never mind. As long as I wish! aha
  23. PrettyLady
I don't blog link exchange so to answer your question, no.
  24. suray
    Related Sites + Backlink = PR ++
  25. RTCunningham
Unless I find the blog offensive, I tend to swap links openly. If someone asks, I'll usually comply. However, I'll check in about a week to see if they added me in reciprocation and if they didn't, I remove the link. Fair is fair.
    1. ladyinfluence
hi RTcunningham.. I also experience the same thing with some bloggers not reciprocating links with me or they tend to remove the links thereafter. In return i remove their links too.
  26. cooper
I don't exchange links at all. I links to blogs I read or add them to my reader. My links are not on my front page anyway.

I don't expect people I link to because I like reading them to link to me if they don't read me.
  27. 2WriteHands
When I first started I accepted links from just about anyone. But now, I'm much pickier. Just because if I end up with 1000 links to blogs I don't even visit, they won't mean much to my readers either.
  28. edward
I know linking is important but my pr was due to a good entries and post.
  29. jerrydrussell
I generally only do link exchanges with blogs that are in my topic, and that I would read myself. Otherwise there's no benefit to my readers whatsoever
  30. coffeesage
I do not. Whenever I first got 'into' blogging, I did and wondered if it was hurting me in the long run. I stayed with a pr3 for a couple years, then once I weeded through the linkage (removed the blogroll and and opted for choice links to like minded blog/site) I jumped to a pr6 then leveled out to a pr5 for a couple years. Then.... I started using textlink ads and Google pushed me down to a pr4. There I stand now.
    1. acousticguitarist
I'll add to that. There are a lot of guitar beginners and non musicians with guitar blogs that often want to link, I won't unless I think they are real players/ guitarists who have something interesting to say or if they have something unique to share about music or the guitar. I get a lot of offers from bloggers doing affiliate marketing of music products, I've even had people steal my content and rework it. I think it's good to maintain a decent standard. A lot of guitar bloggers write a few lines of dribble, add a video of some player they have never met and then try and sell affiliate products.
  31. libdrone
I keep my blog roll very short and make clear these are blogs I actually read. And when I have taken the time to develop a real relationship with another blogger and then make a big deal about adding them to my very short list, they most always respond in kind. That real estate is too valuable to have links you don't editorially recommend.
  32. izzy69rocks
It's ok to exchange links ..... it kinda builds on your reputation...
  33. DaneMorgan
I don't do link exchanges at all. I link to sites I like and I try to post content that others will want to link to.
  34. binh
    Hi,

I haven't exchanged link with anyone. Really. But if people do ask me for exchange. I take these rules of thumbs.

    Don't:
    1. let Google know you are exchanging.
    2. exchange with Google's blacklisted sites.
    3. exchange with non G-rated sites. Anything beyond isn't good. Unless u are R-rated.
    4. exchange with site which doesn't match Google webmaster's guidlines. They soon will be black listed and you will be investigated.
    5. exchange with site that offer paid links.

    Do:
    1. Link naturally to content you like.
    2. Link with less commercial minded people.
    3. Link with quality content

WOW! Too many... sorry can't list all.
  35. wenghaan
binh, make a post about this. interested to know more.
  36. poochietub
I dont mind link exchange, as long as the blog content is similar to mine. But no blinkies cause it will be too messy.
  37. timethief
No. Quality reciprocal link exchanges in and of themselves are not a bad thing, but most reciprocal link offers are of low quality. If too many of your links are of low quality it may make it harder for your site to rank for relevant queries, and some search engines may look at inlink and outlink ratios as well as link quality when determining how natural a site’s link profile is.

The best linking strategy is to get a lot of non-reciprocal links (or one-way links), which are also relevant links to your site from high ranking and popular sites. When your site receives a lot of quality non-reciprocal links, the search engines consider your websites and the web pages that receive these inbound quality links as containing highly valuable web content.

    yeah it' pretty good idea
  39. littledean1
If they ask me, it's usually because they've read my blog, so I usually do because that puts me out there to that many more potential readers.
  40. pandanartrepublic
yup!!as long it useful to me!!
  41. Sukee
No I don't, I also don't automatically friend people on Twitter either. If I see something I like, I will link to it

FWIW I clicked the username of BC member who posted this thread way back on 7/11/07 and when I arrived on her BC Profile page this is what I found:
lady influence / Member since March 2007 / Last seen 5 months ago
IMHO directly contacting the BC member who posted the thread by using the contact information on her blog(s) is a better way to go in cases like this one. See: www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/no-link-dropping-at-the-end-of-posts-in-d...

I just posted this question this morning before I saw a discussion had already been posted. I believe in only posting links that are similar to my own.
