do you believe that we have full capacity of making ourselves happy?

and to make it lasting we should better spread the seed of happiness around us?

Yes, to an extent, just as we can also make ourselves miserable or apathetic or etc and so forth.

Of course we don't control everything, nor should we always keep strict control on our emotions. The human experience requires the full range of feeling from sad to angry to happy to elated.

    dear anok,

i too agree with you. i think we should let every feeling come to our life, every type of experience, or else we will leave the world feeling incomplete.

    warmest wishes,

you will have to search your happiness within yourself, its not that tough.
you can start by stopping negative thinking and counting your blessing.
relishing the things you love, always finding out some time for them, and try to include more and more in that list.
    2. hatingtherain
It's not that tough? I disagree. I do agree on the rest though. I do count my blessings. At least it isn't terminal. At least he isn't blind, or has to go to the pain managemetnt center, or use a wheelchair.

I think people can try to set the stage, make a decision to work on it, try to be but there are some circumstances that can severely thwart that effort. There are circumstances that make us powerless in that regard.

yes, i agree. but if our foundation is strong, that is if we have created a strong sense of happiness in our own heart we can bounce back from the darkest ditch.

The problem with your argument is that it assumes one can bounce back, but sometimes people are caught in situations there is no escaping and it is a struggle to be happy no matter how strong their foundation. How can one be happy if they are in terrible pain (the kind that requires prescription meds), or watching a loved one slowly die or suffer long term, or has lost a loved one to murder, or is fighting cancer.

Being happy all the time is not always appropriate, there are times for somber reflection, melancholy and introspection, sober thoughtfulness, or accepting that moments of unhappiness are part of the cycle of life.

So while I may have a happy personality and have made choices to support that I am not a proponent of the happiness bandwagon at the expense of facing normal emotions.

I decided to be happy today. It's a frame of mind.and it is also a choice.

Happiness is entirely self-created. You can't find happiness in love or work or in traveling all around the world; you have to bring it with you.

No person, thing or circumstance controls our response to that person, thing or circumstance. We choose our own responses. We have complete control over our state of mind.

do you agree with me that you can make yourself happy?
do you believe that we have full capacity of making ourselves happy?

Yes. Happiness is a decision made between the ears. We choose our emotions; they do not choose us. And we are capable of choosing to be happy despite our circumstances.

and to make it lasting we should better spread the seed of happiness around us?

No I don't go for this should stuff. It leads to judging others. The truth is that our lives are full of >strong> coulds options - alternatives - choices we can make.

Many factors affect the choices we make at any point in time. Once I have made the happiness choice between my ears there will be a natural spread of goodwill. However, I will not agree be bound to any agenda that compels me to spread happiness, and think positively all of the time, because that wouldn't be balanced or achievable or desirable.

to quote from timethief: Many factors affect the choices we make at any point in time. you've hit the nail there:)

that's exactly why we have to avoid exposing ourselves to situations which can make us make wrong choices. television, the stories we read, the friends we go out with, the environment we're surrounded with: these are the things that are crucial in fostering our well being. i am not saying angst is wrong or sadness is bad.some artists need those to create art. what i am only concern is, if you can handle them and that you already made those choices.
    1. writings
      agreed again.

    Hi all

Well the question here is not about "Should", it is about "if"..
I agree that we should welcome our feeling, and embrace and understand them, but still it's besides the point.

Point is - We CAN make ourselves happy.
It connects to the point above when in a situation someone
feels low, and they cheer themselves up (if its a momentary
sad feeling), or turn their whole way of life around
(If we're talking about a deeper sense of "happy" and "sad" etc..)

We should even try and make ourselves happy whenever possible.
In the little things as well as the big ones. Try to stress
as little as you can about life - It WILL go on, no matter
what happens, so theres no point in stressing, just relaxing
and dealing with whatever is served.

Well thats it for now, I think I made my point.

    Cheers!

The power to make yourself happy belongs to you and you alone.

I think you of course can make yourself happy and have great happiness in your life created solely by yourself. The one factor that comes into it for me is money. An idealist would say you don't need money to be happy. And I would agree. But I am more of a cynic and money does give one the opportunity to be completely free and that provides great chances for improved happiness.
    1. writings
you are not absolutely wrong, we cant survive without money, but lust of money creates unhappiness. using it for our own good and welfare of others is a step toward creating great happiness.

I think we should be able to feel happy about ourselves without any outside influences. Although I think happiness is a reflection of a life that is viewed as somewhat fulfilled. A full life often consists of a rewarding career, family & friends and so on. So at the same time, if we want to be happy we have to be willing to build a life that sustains happiness. We can't just lock ourselves away and expect to be happy because we like ourselves.
