GOP.gov has a list of Republican core values. Do you agree with them? Do Republicans actually follow these principles? How would a more realistic list of Republican values look? What would your list look like?

Here they are:

1. We're fortunate to live in America
The Republican Party believes that the United States has been blessed with a unique set of individual rights and freedoms available to all.

2. You can be what you are, and become what you are capable of becoming
The Republican Party is inspired by the power and ingenuity of the individual to succeed through hard work, family support and self-discipline.

3. Helping those around you is worthwhile
The Republican Party believes in the value of voluntary giving and community support over taxation and forced redistribution.

4. Small government is a better government for the people
The Republican Party, like our nation's founders, believes that government must be limited so that it never becomes powerful enough to infringe on the rights of individuals.

5. You know what to do with your money better than government
The Republican Party supports low taxes because individuals know best how to make their own economic and charitable choices.

6. Free markets keep people free
The Republican Party is supportive of logical business regulations that encourage entrepeneurs to start more businesses so more individuals can enjoy the satisfaction and fruits of self-made success.

7. Our Armed Forces defend and protect our democracy
The Republican Party is committed to preserving our national strength while working to extend peace, freedom and human rights throughout the world.

Well, we know how much the previous administration respected individual rights and freedom!

For the first time ever in a political discussion, I find that I agree with you, and I'm a registered Republican! Pillownauts criticism pretty much nailed it. It's too vague, vacuous and hokey to be of any value as far as I'm concerned.

    - about the last 3 words: simply false.

    2. You can be what you are, and become what you are capable of becoming
The Republican Party is inspired by the power and ingenuity of the individual to succeed through hard work, family support and self-discipline.

    - Where the fruits of your labor are eaten by middlemen.

    3. Helping those around you is worthwhile
The Republican Party believes in the value of voluntary giving and community support over taxation and forced redistribution.

    - 30% is hardly "tax"

    4. Small government is a better government for the people
The Republican Party, like our nation's founders, believes that government must be limited so that it never becomes powerful enough to infringe on the rights of individuals.

    - according to the daily whims

    5. You know what to do with your money better than government
The Republican Party supports low taxes because individuals know best how to make their own economic and charitable choices.

    - Not me, my employer is supposed to know better

    6. Free markets keep people free
The Republican Party is supportive of logical business regulations that encourage entrepeneurs to start more businesses so more individuals can enjoy the satisfaction and fruits of self-made success.

    - LMFAO

    7. Our Armed Forces defend and protect our democracy
The Republican Party is committed to preserving our national strength while working to extend peace, freedom and human rights throughout the world.

    - wasted all strength and respect on useless fireworks displays

"- about the last 3 words: simply false."

Could you please tell me who was stripped of their free speech, right to compensation for taken property or freedom of religion? Those three already make a set, and there are many more I could list.

"- Where the fruits of your labor are eaten by middlemen."

Middlemen? Or owners of the field you're working.

      "- 30% is hardly "tax""

3/10 of your income is a trivial amount?

"- according to the daily whims"

This one might be your only valid criticism, though they are working on changing it now.

"- Not me, my employer is supposed to know better"

You can buy your own health insurance. You can also select a new employer - most people do every 4 years these days!

      "- LMFAO"

China. They actually have some rights there now. By Comparison, in Seattle, WA where welfare for the homeless is really extensive, they've had to effectively resort to complete Fascism to control the cost.

"- wasted all strength and respect on useless fireworks displays"

Lengthy debate. We'll leave it at I disagree with your conclusion, though at least for this one I can't dismiss it in one line!

Reg the tax, the sarcasm was lost on you..

You want to know who those people are whose rights are trampled?

Shouldn't this discussion be posted at the politics forum?

I tried that one once, but no one notices.. General is best and simple IMHO

Numbers 3,4 and 5. How can they possibly post that. #4 especially. The republican party needs to change a lot before they become what they wish they were.
  5. pillownaut
Republicans (or any other individual political party for that matter) don't own the patents on gratitude, inspiration, generosity, freedom or protection.
  6. cookingasshole
Damn right! I am registered republican.
    1. DollinNYC
      you are dead to me.
    2. jeremyjanson
I guess I'm more dead to you, DollInNYC, though we may have creative differences.

"7. Our Armed Forces defend and protect our democracy. The Republican Party is committed to preserving our national strength while working to extend peace, freedom and human rights throughout the world."

Is this from The Onion? It's a good joke.

"5. You know what to do with your money better than government
The Republican Party supports low taxes because individuals know best how to make their own economic and charitable choices."

    This one is funny, too!
  9. Serbaunt
Obama is going to turn the U.S. into Canada. There's no fancy words the GOP can come up with to change that. Democrats just have to remind people of Dick Cheney.
  10. NatetheGrate
Not even Republicans believe in that crap.
  11. HollytheHousewife
Whateverrrrr, I'm damn proud to be an american....I am me I agree with some of the republic, and I agree with some of the dems, but I don't agree with what is going on in govt right now!
  12. TCblogger
    2. You can be what you are, and become what you are capable of becoming
The Republican party helps those who are a little bit rich get richer if they play by the "rules"

    4. Small government is a better government for the people
Small government is good for the Republicans ESPECIALLY when it lets Republicans do what they want.

    6. Free markets keep people free
That is true, now if Republicans didn't support monopolies it would be great.

I held back, I was a Republican not too long ago.
    1. crazyTsu
I play by the rules, but I am a jackass now because so many people didn't play by rules and changed them in their favor
  13. HollytheHousewife
Well,if we could be a republic the way it was intended then I say HELL 2 the YEA!
  14. drjay1966
    This is a joke, right?

Here are a couple of corrections, to put these more in line with the actual values of the Republican party:

    1. We're fortunate to live in America when a Republican is in office. Otherwise we talk about secession and military coups.

    2. If you're rich, we'll help you get richer.

    3. Helping those around you is for socialists.

    4. A government run by and for big corporations and their stooges is better than one run by the people. Also, while we're against regulations for big corporations, we're all for controlling people's sex lives.

    5. We believe in spending your money on unnecessary wars, rather than providing health care to the needy.
    1. jeremyjanson
Where the heck did you get #3? Some of the most charitable, honorable, giving people I know of are Republicans, including economically libertarian Republicans.
  15. HollytheHousewife
How is that so different than what's going on um like RIGHT NOW, grover?

Nope not a lot has changed AT ALL,cept dems hold a mop a different way than the GOP. In the end they aren't cleaning up s*** just spreading it around in a different way....

    DUHHHH
