Absolutely not. Everyone was convinced the world was going to end in 2000 as well but just like it has for the last zillion years, New Year's came and went without incident. No planes fell out of the sky, the world didn't implode on itself and we're all still hanging around...with the exception of those weirdos who jumped out the window or joined a doomsday cult and poisoned themselves.
Now, the new fad is 2012 because the Myan calendar says so but what proof do we have? How do we know that the calendar-updating dudes didn't just get sick of predicting? The Myans died out, afterall, so maybe that's why their calendar just abruptly stopped. Can't write if you're dead!
Are we so anxious to die that we'll believe in anything? -
Has any one bother to ask today's Mayas (yes, they are still around) what do they think about the whole thing?
I'm pretty sure that a prophecy of that importance would have been passed on though many generations. I have not read or heard of any real Mayan talking about this.-
Yes, I wish I could find the article I read, about a Mayan fellow who had returned from abroad and reported how sick and tired he was of people asking him about the end of the world in 2012.
He pointed out that no one panics before the new wall calendars are out for the next year, and that this is basically the same thing. The world won't end, the Mayans just didn't print a new calendar.

I don't believe that the world will end on that day. earth is too young to die. It may live a few more millions of years before it goes off.
Here is another interesting blog on this topic with a video.
