The older I get, the more I think about this. I wonder if there is an actual electro-magnetic field inside of us or around us, an aura so to speak, that is our spirit. I've often thought that if every living thing has a spirit, then we're in for bigger things in the next life. On the other hand, I have a friend who thinks we're just biological beings, like machines. Like a machine, when our body breaks down, the docs fix it but when the break down is permanent, everything just stops working and that's the end. Because of certain experiences I had as a young man, I tend to believe that there is a spiritual side to all things and possibly an unseen world of spirits out there.
A good book to read about this is "Return From Tomorrow" by Dr. George G. Ritchie
and a good movie to watch is "What Dreams May Come" with Robin Williams. Here's a trailer:

    Without speculating on the electromagnetic nature of the spirit/soul, in the order of existence or Being, what is common to our concrete and abstract modes of existence, and is therefore neither concrete nor abstract, is our substance/soul.

      Thank you for pointing out that link. Duh. Should have searched.
      I think the soul is a combination of body and spirit. Once the body dies, only spirit is left. If there is no spirit or continuation to life, man, that's not good if your number gets called early.

      @videoman,
      It is true that spirit is an ambiguous term. It we understand spirit as intelligence, then it is one of two potencies of the soul, the other being will...

    To me, the spirit is an individual's attitude toward life. There's nothing esoteric or metaphysical about it.

      "To me, the spirit is an individual's attitude toward life."

      Thats sound good to me but sometimes is difficult.

      What governs the mind? The brain and the thoughts in the brain? Is it all just cells and neurons or is there more to us than just a human machine?

    I believe in the "around us" version, but definitely I believe in spirit/soul. I believe the brain is a receptor of souls thoughts, not the producer of them. It feels silly to me not to believe in soul, it's a bit like saying animals don't think or feel.

      I have thought for a while that it makes sense that our brain is just an "interface" for our spirit/soul. There is no doubt in my mind that our experience here is about learning and maturing as a spiritual being. much like a caterpillar becomes a butterfly, we will eventually not need our body and will be free from physical constraints...It is exciting to think how our perspective would change about life.

    Not only do I believe in the divine spirit, I am able to see most people's auras. I have had many incredible "psychic" paranormal visits as well. As an RN, I have been in the room with many people when they have died and I can tell you, the energy is tangle. I once worked with a woman from Barbados, who insisted that we open the door or window so the spirit leaving the body could leave the room. Fascinating.
