Neither, I'm blogging to build a strong writing portfolio. To teach myself to expand my range of knowledge, to share my life, and to meet new people that will change my perspective on the world.

The money isn't an equal exchange of time I spend blogging - but it allows you to sort of experiment with maximizing content vs. advertising... So your a journalist and a bit of marketing junkie at the same time... But it all falls under the fun category.
    1. StyleSwag
Oh boy , you said it. The money doesn't equal the time put in so I guess the fun makes it worth it. Making money from it would then make it LOTS more fun!
  5. kdawg68
I guess both. I don't earn direct money, but my blog is about horse racing and the wagers I make on them....so it kind of tracks my supplemental income adventures.

  20. Merlyn73
I just looked at my Google Analytics stats for the last month. People from 47 different countries have read the words that I wrote, and some of them have probably laughed. THAT'S why I blog. To connect with the rest of the species and maybe get a chuckle or two out of them. There's no money in the world that can take the place of that feeling. I do use some affiliate programs, but not with any overblown gusto. If by some crazy miracle I end up making money too, I'm not opposed to it. It's just not my focus.
    1. webdiggin
It's neat seeing the statistics and maps of where all the visitors come from. I've noticed that since I've started to comment on here, more people have visited our site, which is cool.
  21. VioletsVintage
I blog for fun but I have picture links to my jewelry designs that I sell on Etsy. I'm never sure if people are using my blog to go to my shop or not!

I just enjoy people reading my blog and commenting, I love when I get comments!

Just for fun. I love to write and I love to uncover interesting vintage items, so together the two activities keep me (and I hope my readers!) merrily entertained.

    JUST FOR FUN...

is it really true blog can earn you money?
    (hmmm.....)
    1. jazevvox
yes its true, there are some bloggers somewhere that sure make some/lots
    2. CreativeFossil
If you write so much you can eventually produce an ebook then yes.

Quite undeliberately I have now amassed a whopping 20,000 words (which grows by 1000 weekly) re dating and relationships and an ebook and perhaps even a paper book is now my next project.

Also my blogging is what brought me to my present spot as relationship columnist and paid blogger, so it can pay. But not without considerable effort.
    3. webdiggin
      It's exciting that you're making an e-book.

Have you been successful in generating income with an ebook, or is it a free giveaway to get email names to do targeted outbursts with later?

  31. artscapes
I started my blog to get me to 'journal' my inspirations and the process of art making for my own work. So, I guess it is for fun and to hopefully allow people into the experience of a working artist. Maybe I'll use it for making money later, but I doubt it's the best candidate for that!

There have been so many nights when I am blogging intensely and I look up at the clock and it's 7AM in the morning already! Yeah, I blog a lot of all-nighters! How else do ya think I'm gonna be able to network with 2200 MyBlogLog bloggers? It's hard work but it's a labor of love!!

  43. estertey
actually both...but sometimes its stressful to think how to make more money esp if you're not a full time blogger.

I think you should always keep in mind to have more fun than making money from your blog. Money is just one incentives in blogging.
  44. happyfoodgirl
I do it for fun, but I hope to do this on a full-time basis one day. The net is the only place where I can say what I want and not be worried about HR pulling me aside.

Yes, it's fun and if I ever get super-traffic, I'm still not sure if I'd like to 'sell out' or not. Money can't hurt, that's for sure.

  61. Kraziquban
Well I'm definitely not making money, so I guess I'm having fun. You need to offer other choices...why indeed.
  62. Greekgeek
Both and neither. I've always blogged for fun on LJ, but it's been friends-only. Friends I've known for years, rather than the web 2.0 version. I started on Cafepress and Squidoo to earn a little money on the side.

But now I've started a blog as a service, for whoever's out there that's looking for the content I'm trying to write.

I've got some obscure knowledge and interests and skills which would've looked really good on a "Bard" resumé in Celtic society (or Greek, except women didn't get to be bards much). But where are bards employed nowadays? Not in a 9 to 5 job.

So I've decided to take bardic arts to the blogosphere and see what happens. I hope to make a little money to brush off self-doubt: "hey, that's not a REAL job!" But that's not what the blog's for. It's something I should do, because it's something I can do, and give. That's all.

Which probably sounds totally loony toons to y'all.
  63. Fedor23
    for your pleasure

We blog for mostly fun, but we've got to admit we're using it to build up buzz about our books!
  65. bluecyberman
It's fun to blog for money and make friends around the world...cheers!
  66. jas
Just for fun. I don't think I'd realistically make any money or profit from it unless I was writing stuff people went goo goo gah gah for.
  67. 7masterheathen
I blog to vent my insatiable hostility toward an insane society that tears at the very fabric of the space-time continuim.... Did I spell that right? Continium? Communism? Ah, yes, well. Something was being torn. And it's for... uh... fun. Yes, fun.
  68. gosmelltheflowers
For f-f-f-f-f- fun mainly with occasional giveaways and flower sales around the world to top it off.....

Do whatcha love - $ will follow!
  69. PetLvr
I hope to one day make money somehow, either "end game" (sell ventures and make millions) or just afford a nice vacation once a year .. and, maybe contribute to some household expenses .. My ventures are more than a hobby though, as I need to keep throwing fuel on the fire to keep it going. Sometimes it's fun . sometimes, it's not as fun.
  70. smcsharry
I do it for both...because making money IS fun!
  71. atomickarma
Bit of both - I'm hoping that my work on Quintessential Comedy and Led Zeppelin Love can be developed at some stage into something more than "just" a blog.

but it's all fun, and stumbling upon blogcatalog has been an eye opener
  72. bulos45
both I guess... I blog for money and if money comes that would be fun.

    I blog for beer.
  76. harvey96
Me too! tired of blogging for $$ now.
  77. dannyvice
Most people who earn minimum wage or above will make more giving an hour of their time at a job than they will from their blog...so I think it's fair to say even those who try to glean a little income from a blog, aren't really, truly after the money.
  78. Norski
Money, but it's fun, too. I'm trying to find a way to make a living without going bonkers.

I probably wouldn't be posting as often, or as regularly (two distinct concepts), if I wasn't trying to generate revenue.

The need to make money has a wonderfully focusing effect on one's attention and actions.
  79. aleare
I started my blog 3 years ago, and I'm still writing just for fun, because sometimes I have things to say that maybe nobody matters, but I need to take off my head. I don't care about making lots of money online, because I have a good job now ('good' not for the money, but I simply enjoy my job as a creative web developer)... but of course, every extra $$ are welcome.

Cheers from someplace else in Buenos Aires city.
  80. friendsofmissi
I blog to relieve my soul...
  81. hartcone
yeah, it's just for fun, but if can makes money why not? but i never made money from my blog...
  82. atimetodance
Definitely for fun. Right now I don't make any money off my blog. Occasionally I get free tickets to dance performances and events or exclusive parties and that has its own benefits. However, I am hoping to learn more about putting ads on my site so I can at least finance my dance classes with my blog. But whether or not I make any money I am going to continue to do it because it is so fun.

  88. webdiggin
Money. But, I agree, if it wasn't fun, we wouldn't stick to it. We're experimenting with a number of different ways to make money online.

Sure we're journaling our adventures about making money (Hey we've only lost $260 so far, but we're gaining ground! webdiggin.com/130/cashflow-feb2008/), but we also blog about other things: Japanese-Canadian cooking (gohanyo.ca), travel (whattheduck.ca), good things in life (ripplesofkindness.com) and crappy things (snitchandbitchcafe.com)

It'd be nice if the money part was easy as the bloggin part, though.

I don't think my blog is nearly popular enough for me to be able to make any money on it, mainly because the topic is quite narrow. It's all my more or less random thoughts about the country I come from, Norway.

Thus I blog mostly for my own amusement.

But another maybe more important reason is that I use my blogging as a way to stay somewhat intellectually involved with what is going on back home, since I no longer live in Norway. I feel that if I write about stuff, it forces me to have more articulated opionions and to think things more through.

Also, blogging is a great way to improve my writing skills.

If you have any interest in the topic of my blog, here's the address:
    randomthoughtsonnorway.blogspot.com/
    1. jazevvox
Norway is a great topic, there are plenty of people who are interested to visit and travel Norway.
    2. kennethnygaard
Actually, you are right - a lot of people seem to be interested in Norway. In fact, I have met quite a few people in other countries that have a great interest in Norway, and who also speak some Norwegian.

    Fun and money.

We got tired of talking to ourselves in the blogosphere, so now we're trying to build up our readership. We're taking on sponsored posts to make some cash, and then we're giving it away to people just for commenting on our site or subscribing to our site.

Last month, we made $75 in sponsored posts, so our plan is to run a $25 comment contest for the next 3 months...
