DO YOU BLOG for MONEY or JUST FUN?
User Comments

I was starting blogging as a hobby. Now I try to monetize it and earn some extra money for my next vacation.

Neither, I'm blogging to build a strong writing portfolio. To teach myself to expand my range of knowledge, to share my life, and to meet new people that will change my perspective on the world.

The money isn't an equal exchange of time I spend blogging - but it allows you to sort of experiment with maximizing content vs. advertising... So your a journalist and a bit of marketing junkie at the same time... But it all falls under the fun category.

I just looked at my Google Analytics stats for the last month. People from 47 different countries have read the words that I wrote, and some of them have probably laughed. THAT'S why I blog. To connect with the rest of the species and maybe get a chuckle or two out of them. There's no money in the world that can take the place of that feeling. I do use some affiliate programs, but not with any overblown gusto. If by some crazy miracle I end up making money too, I'm not opposed to it. It's just not my focus.

I blog for fun but I have picture links to my jewelry designs that I sell on Etsy. I'm never sure if people are using my blog to go to my shop or not!
I just enjoy people reading my blog and commenting, I love when I get comments!

If you write so much you can eventually produce an ebook then yes.
Quite undeliberately I have now amassed a whopping 20,000 words (which grows by 1000 weekly) re dating and relationships and an ebook and perhaps even a paper book is now my next project.
Also my blogging is what brought me to my present spot as relationship columnist and paid blogger, so it can pay. But not without considerable effort.

I'm happy to say that I was blogging full-time in under 6 months. It's great to be able to say that.

I started my blog to get me to 'journal' my inspirations and the process of art making for my own work. So, I guess it is for fun and to hopefully allow people into the experience of a working artist. Maybe I'll use it for making money later, but I doubt it's the best candidate for that!

Making money from my blogging is all good, but I am so obsessed with blogging it's beyond imagination!!
I blog because I love it! I live to blog! I love reading ten different bloggers forums and posting on them! I love BlogCatalog! I love StumbleUpon so much!
I carry a notebook with me all the time, just to write down all my ideas for my blog! There have been so many nights when I am blogging intensely and I look up at the clock and it's 7AM in the morning already! Yeah, I blog a lot of all-nighters! How else do ya think I'm gonna be able to network with 2200 MyBlogLog bloggers? It's hard work but it's a labor of love!!
I blog because I LOVE TO BLOG!!!
Ready...................Set.....................BLOG!!!!!!!!!
BTW....Check out my blog!

Since last year, I've grossed rougly 3 bucks in adsense revenue...so hopefully, I'm not doing it for the money. Though I would love to figure out how to make my blogging more lucrative. Maybe more traffic would help...

Life is ridiculous. Read about it here. -
Isn't making money fun?
I do it for fun; but also welcome some pocket money, even though not getting! -
-
I think I do both because I have two main blogs.
I started with DatCurious.com for fun and DatMoney.com was to try to make money... and so far so good! -
I blog to improve my writing skills and push myself to try new things in my profession and in life. Only a little bit of it is about money.

Both and neither. I've always blogged for fun on LJ, but it's been friends-only. Friends I've known for years, rather than the web 2.0 version. I started on Cafepress and Squidoo to earn a little money on the side.
But now I've started a blog as a service, for whoever's out there that's looking for the content I'm trying to write.
I've got some obscure knowledge and interests and skills which would've looked really good on a "Bard" resumé in Celtic society (or Greek, except women didn't get to be bards much). But where are bards employed nowadays? Not in a 9 to 5 job.
So I've decided to take bardic arts to the blogosphere and see what happens. I hope to make a little money to brush off self-doubt: "hey, that's not a REAL job!" But that's not what the blog's for. It's something I should do, because it's something I can do, and give. That's all.
Which probably sounds totally loony toons to y'all.

I hope to one day make money somehow, either "end game" (sell ventures and make millions) or just afford a nice vacation once a year .. and, maybe contribute to some household expenses .. My ventures are more than a hobby though, as I need to keep throwing fuel on the fire to keep it going. Sometimes it's fun . sometimes, it's not as fun.
-
Money, but it's fun, too. I'm trying to find a way to make a living without going bonkers.
I probably wouldn't be posting as often, or as regularly (two distinct concepts), if I wasn't trying to generate revenue.
The need to make money has a wonderfully focusing effect on one's attention and actions. -
I started my blog 3 years ago, and I'm still writing just for fun, because sometimes I have things to say that maybe nobody matters, but I need to take off my head. I don't care about making lots of money online, because I have a good job now ('good' not for the money, but I simply enjoy my job as a creative web developer)... but of course, every extra $$ are welcome.
Cheers from someplace else in Buenos Aires city. -
Definitely for fun. Right now I don't make any money off my blog. Occasionally I get free tickets to dance performances and events or exclusive parties and that has its own benefits. However, I am hoping to learn more about putting ads on my site so I can at least finance my dance classes with my blog. But whether or not I make any money I am going to continue to do it because it is so fun.
-
Money. But, I agree, if it wasn't fun, we wouldn't stick to it. We're experimenting with a number of different ways to make money online.
Sure we're journaling our adventures about making money (Hey we've only lost $260 so far, but we're gaining ground! webdiggin.com/130/cashflow-feb2008/), but we also blog about other things: Japanese-Canadian cooking (gohanyo.ca), travel (whattheduck.ca), good things in life (ripplesofkindness.com) and crappy things (snitchandbitchcafe.com)
It'd be nice if the money part was easy as the bloggin part, though. -
well, blog for fun and make money, to me making money is always fun. Just like watch your son coming from the mother's womb : )

I don't think my blog is nearly popular enough for me to be able to make any money on it, mainly because the topic is quite narrow. It's all my more or less random thoughts about the country I come from, Norway.
Thus I blog mostly for my own amusement.
But another maybe more important reason is that I use my blogging as a way to stay somewhat intellectually involved with what is going on back home, since I no longer live in Norway. I feel that if I write about stuff, it forces me to have more articulated opionions and to think things more through.
Also, blogging is a great way to improve my writing skills.

I started this blog ( rosescollection.blogspot.com/ ) as our blog shop and it is very helpful.

Made $4.70 with Adsense in 3 weeks, can't quit my day job just yet. Blogging has become more of an addiction these past few weeks.
-
For both, my mission is to create good writing cutewriting.blogspot.com It is a monitized blog in order for me to write freely on it . I need to promote good writing as a cause.

Fun and money.
We got tired of talking to ourselves in the blogosphere, so now we're trying to build up our readership. We're taking on sponsored posts to make some cash, and then we're giving it away to people just for commenting on our site or subscribing to our site.
Last month, we made $75 in sponsored posts, so our plan is to run a $25 comment contest for the next 3 months...
