I know of instances when a commenter leaves a link to a better and relevent blog post, only to have the blog owner REMOVE it.

Are you threatened by the fact that your readers will be exposed to better blog posts than yours and so do you remove such comments?

I personally don't remove comments in my blog that link to anything, unless it links to questionable content.

I believe sharing links in the comment is one of the ways of sharing knowledge in the blogosphere and if I lose readers in my blog because they found better content, then I don't deserve to have them anyway. And sooner or later my readers are gonna be exposed to better content than mine - the web is full of wonderful stuff.

What is your view?

    If the link is relevant I don't remove it. And why worry about people moving on to better blogs? Someone is ALWAYS going to better than you at something. That's why it's good to give readers something they may not find elsewhere: your unique voice or writing style... or so I've heard.

    No. I don't care if you leave links unless I can't view it around my children. My comment box is to have a conversation with you. I don't care if people are looking for other sites through my blog as long as it's clean.
  3. ThriftShopRomantic
    If a link is relevant to the discussion and useful for readers, it stays. If it's put there solely for blog advertisement purposes, that's just tacky, and I don't publish the comment.

    But then I also don't view my blog that competitively in terms of my discussions versus others in my genre.

    I concur, if it's relevant, it stays.

      i didn't mention YOU anywhere in the discussion, did i?
      i don't see why youi had to take it personally.
      this discussion is not about you, it's a result of a blog post i read.
      i hope you understand.
  5. crkian
    why worry about it, someone would still have to come to your blog to see the link in the first place

    @timethief, you said.....

    I deleted your comment because you did not make an actual comment. What you did was post a pseudo comment only for the purpose of promoting your own blog post. I'm astonished that you would spend 2 days hounding me about this, rather than getting on with your life.

    However, if you spam my blog posts or my guest writer's blog posts again I will delete the pseudo-comments again.

    It makes absolutely no difference to me what policy others choose to have on their blogs. On my blog I set the policy and none of the passive aggressive manipulative tactics you employ will be effective.

    ---------

    I didn't mention you anywhere in the discussion. This is a general discussion, please don't make personal references!

    I prefer not to reply to your accusations. You won't be able to provide any proof that I have been hounding you for two days, cos I haven't.
  7. Shiley
    I did this once to someone not w/ the intent to "spam" I just really thought they'd prefer my other 2 blogs to the My Thoughts blog.
  8. yahooinsider
    well, we all are here to group together. why to delete someone's link ? :-) We all are friends here.
    1. timethief
      Provided that the bloggers commenting are actually adding something to the discussion I do not remove their links. However, if they are just link dropping in an attempt to divert readers to their blog post then I do not feel the same way.

    I mark the comment as spam, if there is viagra, penis, or a celebrity name in the URL ... if there are more than 2 links in the comment, my Akismet automatically marks it as spam and puts it into moderation and I never un-moderate .. I'm too busy for that. For the legitimate individuals who comment and leave more than two links and it still is in moderation and then they send me a contact form notice - I might release the comment from moderation.
    1. PetLvr
      but - I will add ... it's pretty bad etiquette for bloggers to comment in someone else's blog - and then after the comment leave a 'signature' or link back to their blog. It's already there when you click your name on the comment - the duplicate signature URL you add is truly spam. STOP IT! thanks.
    2. timethief
      @PetLvr
      I use the same process with one exception. I place no value on comments that appear to be submitted only for the purpose of dropping a link back to the commenting party's blog. I do not mark such comments as "spam" I just delete them.
    3. PetLvr
      If you edit in wordpress and/or label them spam - your akismet will remember them for future comments and save you 15 seconds of your life by automatically deleting them for you.
    4. Shiley
      I swear I'm being completely serious. Really? I didn't know this.

    @PetLvr
    I know that but I have yet to choose to use it because I assume that people learn equally well from their failures as they do from successes. Perhaps a 3 strikes your out policy may be worth considering.
  11. timethief
    @Shirley
    Akismet "learns" so if we wordpress bloggers feed the spamdragon a pseudo-comment after several "feedings" the next time that party comments again their comment will go directly into the spam queque. Also note that we wordpress users have the ability to blacklist as well.

    Up until now I have not chosen to use either one. I am patient but the 3 times and you are fed into the spamdragon's belly policy is beginning to sound like the way for me to go.
    1. Shiley
      Well, I don't go bezerk I only did it one time. I truly did feel that they'd like the other blogs better (in all honesty I like the other blogs better) I would never be so tacky as to do it more than once. One time is enough.
    2. timethief
      Shirley,
      You have never done this on my blog so not to worry.
    3. Shiley
      As I said only one time I don't do stuff like that.
  12. dotartdude
    I keep comments with links that are relevant to a post or a discussion among the comments. If someone has something to contribute, I welcome what that person adds to comments.
    1. timethief
      @dotartdude
      So do I provided that the bloggers commenting are actually adding something to the discussion. If they are just link dropping in an attempt to divert readers to their blog then I do not feel the same way.

      BTW I do have a published comment policy. And, on my free hosted non-commercial, no advertising allowed blogs wordpress[dot]com blogs, I remove any commercial links that those commenting may choose to include in their comments.

    @Petlvr,

    that's my comment policy too.

    The duplicate sig thing is cheesy, to say the least.
    I never mark ordinary bloggers' comments as spams, no matter how much they might get on my nerve. Only Spammers get that medicine.

    thanks for your concern and your work here"

    @Shiley,
    "Well, I don't go bezerk I only did it one time. I truly did feel that they'd like the other blogs better (in all honesty I like the other blogs better) I would never be so tacky as to do it more than once. One time is enough."

    What if the commenter thought that the comment didn't appear the first time due to some problem? And THAT'S why (s)he posted the comment the second time??
    Maybe the commenter had a problem as described below?
    en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=26922

    And what if the commenter clarified the issue in the other blog? As in the case below?

    thanks to every one. it is hard to carry on a conversation if what you see is gone the next moment after you hit the "publish" button".

    you will not find the comment that I reported. It was edited by the author.

      IMO you are neither respectful nor intelligent. You lied. What's worse is that you are now making false accusations re: personal attacks after you had my responses above "removed".

      However, the other bloggers here are not dull of wit. They read what I posted prior to you having my responses removed and they are now seeing that what I stated you were up to is exactly what you are doing.

      I deleted your comment because you did not make an actual comment. What you did was post a pseudo comment only for the purpose of promoting your own blog post. I'm astonished that you would spend 2 days hounding me about this, rather than getting on with your life.

      I have no more time, energy or respect for you at this juncture. I have a life to live so I'm off to live it.

    I have learned a valuable lesson today. Never make a comment in Blogcatalog while the other person still has the time to edit his/her comment. Or else, you will end up looking like a fool, since what you responded to doesn't exist in the actual form any longer.

    It's hard to tell who your true internet friend is.

    BTW, i started this post because I was concerned about a comment in my post a few days ago.
    shongjog.wordpress.com/2007/10/19/bloghopping/#comments

    And then I found this post today in a friend's blog and got me thinking even some more.
    ewordpress.wordpress.com/2008/04/12/amit-agarwal-dont-respect-your-comments...

    I was looking for opinions in this thread, personal reference was not my intention, but I don't like being the scapegoat either.

    Nobody prefers that, especially if the attack is direct, blatant and personal.

    (p.s.: I wonder why i was accused that I lied.)
  19. sanjidas
    @Timethief,
    you said.....

    ---------------

    "What's worse is that you are now making false accusations re: personal attacks after you had my responses above "removed"."

    -------------------------

    I would never in my wildest dreams imagine that I have such a big influence on the community to make them remove a comment. I merely reported the comments, they removed them because that's what they thought was appropriate.

    you further said,
    ----------------------------------

    "However, the other bloggers here are not dull of wit. They read what I posted prior to you having my responses removed and they are now seeing that what I stated you were up to is exactly what you are doing."

    ------------------------

    as for others reading your reply prior to it being removed, they can STILL read it. I have it quoted in one of my comments. So they and new readers know what I am "up to".

    I do wish that you have a successful blog and live a wonderful AND healthy life.
