Discussions

I am presently trying to teach myself (with books and cartooning forums etc.) how to draw cartoons and have created a blog to share my early efforts with others wanting to learn the art of cartooning.

www.cartoonsbyleah.com

(no ads, no affiliate links, nothing to sell on this blog, it is purely for fun, hobby blog)

Please pass by and let me have your feedback.

With all things like this feedback and encouragement as well as handy tips and advice is all important.

I have also created a group here to discuss and share all things cartooning.

In the meantime, do any of you draw your own cartoons to accompany your blog posts as that is what I hope to use my new cartoon skills for.

I think it will add to the readers experience if there is a cute, funny, satirical image to go with the text.

Nice cartoons you've got. Being a cartoonist is one of my frustrations. May I learn through your blog...
    1. CelebrityIcePop
Thanks and yes you can, we can learn together.

I joined a cartoonist forum yesterday and those guys are awesome!
I have started a group here too (see my groups via profile) not sure if we can post pics there though?

The book I bought is very helpful (mentioned on my blog). It basically says practice, practice, practice! Hence yesterday I drew about 5 cartoons!
  2. bringbackpluto

    1. CelebrityIcePop

    1. CelebrityIcePop

  4. dereksmithers
I prefer to rely on my ability to articulate.

But in my spare time, I draw doodles of sexual organs.
    1. dereksmithers

Well I use different software but my main tool is Photoshop CS3 and a Wacom tablet... I believe as well that practice and intensity are main ingredients in becoming a good artists... If you want I can give you some great websites that you can visit so that you can develop your skills.

    1. claudiorodval
Ok I wrote some cool tips on the cartooning forum
  8. DaniG
I am a cartoonist - but have not put my cartoons on my blog (except for the masthead). I've done cartooning for over 30 years, but have only made income with cartooning for the last 15-20. I remember my dad telling me I could be anything I wanted to be in life...except an artist. He said they always starve. Yet, I can say, my cartooning has always bailed me out when I've been up against the wall. Besides, it's one of the most fun jobs I've ever had. Also the one I have to be the most careful with. People have pink lace feelings sometimes. Good luck. What cartoon forum did you find?
    1. DaniG
Nevermind, I see it right above my post. I got interrupted writing my post and didn't see you added the forum. Terrific!
    2. CelebrityIcePop
Hi the main cartooning forum I found I'll list on the cartoon group on blogcatalog as I don't want to risk post being deleted here.

Meanwhile, do you have any samples of your work I'd love to see them!

      Thanks

      Leah
  9. DaniG
Hi Leah. Regarding samples, it's complicated. The short version is that I'm just about to launch cartoons onto my blog. That was the original intent, hence the title. But my blog width does not fit my cartoon width. Because I do all my cartooning by computer now (never touching pen to paper) and my strip is a 3-panel editorial strip, I have to fiddle with it to either widen my blog, or shrink my cartoon, neither of which I am tech-savvy enough to do (which is another story.) Professional artists cannot believe that I do all my cartoon work using Quark. It was the only computer program I had access to - we couldn't afford Adobe Illustrator at the time. Since then, we bought AI, but by that time, I was too comfortable with Quark, so changing programs was frustrating to me! I feel like a cave-woman with a rock and a stick, trying to grind out an understanding of blog designs, etc. Originally, I thought it would only take a week or two. I've now had my blog up since August, and the only example of my cartooning is on the masthead. I've got hundreds of my published cartoons ready to be uploaded. But I have to either get my theme page reworked, or redo each cartoon, neither option attractive.)

At any rate, I'll let everyone know when I finally get my cartoons posted. (I'll be singing it from the mountain tops.) Until then, I'm just posting comical stories, and stories of the stone work I've done on my house.
    1. CelebrityIcePop
Aww that's a shame but I do understand, I am also a technophobe!!
  10. LGramlich
I don't, myself, but I have a blog friend who's blog is completely illustrated; carolinescrayons.blogspot.com/

    1. CelebrityIcePop

  13. PetLvr
I've always wanted to do that .. good job!
(and good artist signature too :D)
  14. gentledove
I do scribbles, nowhere near as good and talented as yours and yet people like them and I get alot of compliments, also some have become search items in themselves.
    1. CelebrityIcePop
excellent, I shall check out your site.

I love looking at cartoons, and the great thing is that they can be simple, simpler the better as it's the story that matters.
  15. Friday13
I've only drawn something specifically for a post, one time:

It was done using Inkscape (vector graphics app.) because I couldn't draw to save my life

I should try more often, because it's so very easy.
    1. CelebrityIcePop
this is good, how did you embed this image in the post??
    2. Friday13
You can embed images with the IMG tag:
      www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_IMG.asp

      @shade

if you pop along to my blog or to the group here, I am lsitng resources as I come across them re learning how to cartoon.
  18. Rivy
My posts always include drawings. Some fall into the cartoon style. Comics were a big inspiration for my art. I use whatever mood strikes the moment. Good to see what you are doing. Keep doing and you will find your style. Your path. Your direction. Your signature. And it is an enjoyable trip along the way.
    1. CelebrityIcePop
cool, I'll check out your site.

Maybe we should have a directory of bloggers who cartoon too?

    2. DaniG
      Sorry, that didn't work, either.
    3. DaniG
Try #3. If this doesn't work, I'm going back to pencil and paper!!!

      cartoon_watershortage
    4. DaniG
OK, in an earlier post, you asked how to embed pictures and haven't gotten your answer yet. You are able to embed pictures by copying the html img link and copying it into the dialog box. The problem I was having was that I could not get the size right and the cartoon was HUGE! Now, it is too small, and I don't think you all can click on it to enlarge it enough to read it. I'll work out that kink another day. The pictures, I think, must be published somewhere to get that html img link right. Gosh, I hope that helps. Certainly, if you all have microscopes, you can enjoy this photograph of one of my cartoons. I still haven't figured out how to take the art from a Quark file and get it to come out on my blog correctly. That, my dear friends, is enough to give me a MASSIVE headache!
    5. CelebrityIcePop
Cartoon pic looks great but I can't read it unfortunately
    6. DaniG
When I wake up a little more, I'll see about getting these where they are big enough to read, but don't take over the entire screen. That was too hard to do yesterday. Glad you figured out the loading process. Your cartoons came out great! My problem is that mine are almost all the same 3-panel strip, so dividing them either takes up so much more screen space (don't know if I should worry about that - it's not like I am cutting down trees), but it would be nice if you could see them like I do - where they are read-able.
  21. morgantj
I've made some comics with Pixton - pixton.com/+/morgantj
  22. offendedblogger
    Nice!

I don't draw cartoons, but I did draw my self portrait for the header of my blog: offendedblogger.com
  23. CelebrityIcePop
I'm gonna experiment with this image loading thingy

    child and kitten

woohoo it worked!! Excellent, now we can post cartoons to the cartoon group

Thanks all and I'll check out all those blogs with cartoons.
  24. CelebrityIcePop
This cartoon is from a strip I created called Sibling Rivalry. It is based on my two children Ad and Soph.

The title of this strip is:

    The Last Word

    the last word pic 1

    the last word pic 2

    the last word pic 3

In the groups section of blogcatlog (via my profile and linked somewhere in this thread)you can access the new cartooning group. I have added a thread to allow members to submit their own cartoons (as above). Please do join and contribute as it will be great fun!
  25. MrPoo
Hi. You are doing a great job with your cartoons. Nobody is born as pro, so practice, practice and practice. I have done it for a while and I think they are getting better and better. I just posted a cartoon about zombies, and did put it in a funny "Safety Guide"
    Have a look at

    mydirtytoilet.blogspot.com/2009/10/zombie-safety-guide.html

I draw them on paper, then scan them as bitmap and color them on photoshop. Photoshop is good to put color, but freehand is even better.

Continue with your great work. I just plan to continue my zombie theme.
    1. CelebrityIcePop
Thanks, I will take a look

I hope all you cartoonists do add your blogs links to the group here on UKBF.

Meanwhile I am about to buy my most essential piece of kit:

      pencil and eraser

It's clearly been too long since I did any drawing!!
  26. HikingArtist
    Hi
I got a blog with my cartoons - hikingArtist.com - its all about practice, I would say, I started with a three weeks course in 1989, to learn it... thought that was enough - now around twenty years after I still have so much too learn...
I put up my cartoons for free downloads and use on blogs here hikingartist.com/art for those that want to use my work for free.
    1. CelebrityIcePop
Hi Hiking artist, I am familiar with your great work. Very inspiring!
  27. TheCrazyhorse

  29. moooooog35
I've done a couple of cartoons..but for my blog, my bread n butter is modifying Google images using such high tech tools as "Microsoft Paint."

    Don't worry...I'm a professional.
