Ok my son is sitting in the floor playing and talking to his self. So I thought does any one else do this? and if so do you answer your selves back? And is this considered a mental problem?

If it's considered a mental problem, there would be very few people not in mental institutions.

    wait...

Sure, all the time-but nobody's listening.

that's why I have pets. otherwise, I'd be talking to myself all day long.

I thought it was a sign of intelligence to talk to yourself... I guess we are GENIUSES

I talk to myself when I'm playing tennis: "Focus on the ball... focus on the damn ball..."
  8. rickyjr
I was with satijournal, normally when I need to focus.... either in bball games, surfing comps, or just playing golf with my friends, i sometimes talk to my self to focus.

All the time. I grew up as an only child. If I didn't talk to me, who would?

Presently, I Am Advised Not To!

As Far The Question, It IS A Mental Health Issue If Done In Excess. Excess Of Anything Is Bad, Right?!

      Of course, doesn't everyone?
If I don't respect myself enough to correct myself for wrongdoings, forgive my failings and start anew, who will?
If I don't like myself enough to celebrate my successes, and make plans for achieving more of successes, who will?
If I don't love myself to encourage and support myself through all of life's changes, who will?
And, if I cannot take care of myself by conducting an inner dialog deep down inside my "self" then what will I have to offer anyone else in relationship with me?

No. What do you mean you want chicken? We are not having chicken. I said no!

I talk to myself constantly--and no, I don't consider it a mental problem, unless your argue with yourself and don't win.

I had an invisible friend named Bimby when I was young. I talked to Bimby all the time. Bimby was also responsible for broken items in the house, cookies missing from the cookie jar, and other things that Melinda would have *never* done.

I sometimes talk to myself in the car, e.g., reciting grocery lists I need to remember, tasks I need to remember for the coming day, etc.

I also silently speak to people I'm thinking about at times. I know that such messages can't be directly heard, but there is more than what science tells us, I believe.

I identify with your last two sentences. I do the same and I sense there is more than what science can provide answers for.

I clearly heard my sister's voice calling my name in the middle of the night. I awoke and within moments the phone rang. Another relative was calling me to tell me to book an airplane flight and get to the hospital in another province ASAP as my sister needed me.

@TT and Green: I believe I have experienced this myself.

I will be thinking about my daughter some times ans she comes in the room and asks what I need.

I think talking to yourself can mean a lot of things, but not mental problems. I talk to myself to remind myself of things I need to hear or say out loud to remember. I talk to myself when I think somethings funny, or think of something funny...I talk to myself pretty often.

My mother says talking to yourself is normal...when you start to hear responses from yourself...that's when there is a problem.

    I prefer singing to myself.

Although I tend to have inner dialogue all the time, I try very hard to be aware of moments when I answer back. The first time this happened was about three years ago.

To be honest, it scared me a lot. O_O

i think depending on how and what you are talking to your self about makes it a mental problem, for example i was state champ in college wrestling , i use to talk my self to victory all the time , i would see my apponent slip up and tell my self 'go now mark he's wide open ,9 out of 10 times i was correct.

I talk to myself all the time. At my desk, working around the apartment, walking down the street. Everywhere. Sometimes I realize how bad I'm doing it. Then I start talking to myself about how I'm always talking to myself.
  23. Selbon
    Oh yes! I always talk to myself, everytime I drive alone to my work. psst, I even sing duet with myself...;
  24. bsilvia
    Of course, I do!
  25. hatingtherain
Not often. But I talk to my computer, and I'm usually calling it unrepeatable names.
    1. hatingtherain
I'm a lot nicer to my laptop. I normally call it "Baby"
  26. anticsrocks
    I talk to myself.
No I don't! I told you not to admit that!
Shut up, you're not the boss of me!
    I am you, be quiet!

    Um, no. I don't...
  27. mademoiselleparis
I do but in my head. As a mute conversation
  28. idealpinkrose
My mom said that I used to talk to myself when I was young but in front of the mirror. I still do sometimes but quietly.

It is so normal for kids to talk to themselves. I have only one son and being the only child he speaks to himself while playing with his toys especially cars. There is no mental problem involved here. I too speak to my self if I happen to have an argument with my hubby.
  30. thought
i talk with myself amply but without moving my lips.
