Do you expect the blog owner to reply your comments?

Just curious, how many of you actually wants a reply, and how many don't?
You see, most of the time I don't reply to comments that I feel not expecting one. Cos I don't know whether the commenter clicked on the "Email follow-up comments to ..." check box. And whether he/she will actually come back to see whether I've replied.
But I will definitely reply to comments that asks me a question.
Another tip, for those who doesn't have one, please do have a "Email follow-up comments to ..." check box cos I DO want to know YOUR reply to my comments.

i do expect a reply because a blog is something interactive. if you allow comments in your post, it means you'd like to hear from your readers, and so of course commenters would like to read your response to their comments in return. also, it's only polite to acknowledge a comment made, whether the commenter will come back for your reply or otherwise; even if they don't check the notify follow-up comments through e-mail, they might check back when visiting your blog again the next time. and i think that replying encourages silent readers or future readers to leave a comment if a post provokes their thoughts.
just my two cents, and also speaking from experience.

While I appreciate it, I don't expect it. Everyone has their own style for blogging, and some bloggers comment back, and some don't. I figure I'm going there to see what the blogger themselves has to say, not whether he or she is going to or able to make the time to give me individualized attention.
I do try to respond to my own comments, and yes, users may come back to see the response. It's a nice way of building relationships. I just know everyone's time is limited, so can't be offended if there's no response. -
When I leave comments on blogs I like I do come back to see if they replied. On my own blogs I always reply back.

I comment only for the purpose of leaving my url on your site for others to see.

I really like to see it when someone replies to a comment I ask but I understand that everyone is busy in life and may not have the time some times to do that.
I myself try to answer when I can but I too find myself just having enough time to keep a blog sometimes.

I hope for a reply but don't necessarily expect it. I am more likely to read a blog if the owner is very interactive. I try to reply to every comment I get.

Frankly, I'm confused by this question. If I have a blog with comments enabled, yet don't reply to the readers comments...Why do I have a blog in the first place. What is the point?
Comments are very important to a blog. Firstly, they let the blogger know that people are actually reading the posts. Comments are the blogger's feedback and validation for putting in the effort of writing the blog and keeping it current. Comments are also the reader's contribution to the blog's content.
Why would you not do the commenter the courtesy to reply? I just don't get it. It is part of the equation when you start a blog...to provide the time not only to post, but to reply to your reader's comments. If you cannot find the time to comment, find a college student that can use a few extra bucks a month and outsource your replies.

I agree! Why would I go to the effort of having a place for comments if I'm not going to reply?
On the other hand, if I make a comment on someone else's post, a reply is appreciated, but not expected!
I make a point of taking time to reply, simply because return traffic is the best traffic. To encourage comments, I installed the Comment Luv plugin, which gives a back link to the visitors last blog.
The Subscribe To Comments plugin notifies visitors that I have replied, or that others have commented on the same thread.
Lastly, the Better Comments Plugin allows me to edit/reply to comments from my dashboard.
Since installing these plugins, and replying to comments, I have seen an increase in traffic, as well as the numbers of people taking the time to comment!
Note, these plugins are for Wordpress, and I have no connection with the developers, other than being happy to recommend their work!

"If I have a blog with comments enabled, yet don't reply to the readers comments...Why do I have a blog in the first place. What is the point?"
That's the way I see it, but there are alternative approaches.
Some blogs seem to have such a lively set of readers, that an active 'dialog' takes place without the blogger's intervention. Unhappily, the places I've seen that happen have been on political advocacy blogs - and the 'dialog' often reminds me of two cages of monkeys, throwing stuff at each other.
I'm inclined to agree with your approach.

I agree that I typically appreciate it when they do respond to my comments, but unless I ask a question, I don't usually expect it.
I almost always reply to comments that say something interesting or helpful, but if it doesn't seem necessary, I don't unless there's a question or a request for a reply. -
you have a good point, suppose I have been inconsiderate to many -not that I want to but I still do not know how to handle some things if someone makes me a "friend" i do not know how to put them in my friend list sometimes it works but I am sure I have shunned some and I really do not want to so I usually put a shout answer and do appreciate all the neighbors and friends I have, if I have not answered its because I am not as good at this as some of you and its not intentional

I always check the "subscribe to comments" box. It's one of the first plugins I looked for when I started setting up my WP theme.
But I like when blog authors respond to comments. And even if not right away, I always check to see if they have.
Of course not answering comments is fine, too. It doesn't detract from my enjoyment of the blog.
I answer comments on my blog and it's that much more enjoyable because the people who comment are always good for a laugh -
-
I'll distinguish between wanting a response, and expecting one.
In general, I enjoy seeing responses to what I write: but often what I've written doesn't require one.
I think that your policy of responding to questions, and the rest, is a good idea.
Thanks for starting this thread. -
I have no expectations, but I am happy to get a response from BCers. I use my blog also as a vehicle to let my friends outside of BC know what I am up to. They usually respond with phone calls and emails. Those types of responses don't show up on the blog comments, but they let me know that they stopped by. - Nards

Amongst crafty blogs very rarely do people respond to comments, not because they are being rude just because no-one usually does it! In fact I go back to the author of the comment's blog to respond to craft questions!
In many cases it is a bit like bad etiquette, talking to oneself so to speak!
As time has gone on and my blog has diversified into painting and photographs, increasingly I find myself responding to some of the visitors, especially if there is questions...
Reading this I am a little horrified, some people must have thought me awfully ignorant........ :-(-
I don't know. I think you're quite right about the craft/home blog genre... I have a blog in that niche myself, and it's true that while folks there may visit each other's blogs, they don't necessarily comment on their own comments.
I wonder if many bloggers don't view their blog as an output-- like a series of newspaper feature articles. People may or may not choose to read it or choose to comment. But most people don't expect a response from the author of a newspaper article.
Blogging has taken on something different. And while I certainly do believe visitor interaction is a marvelous thing and I respond to comments myself, I occasionally get the impression from reading the boards that visitors feel they should have more control over other blogger's material than they do.
Or maybe it's just a misperception on my part.

I love to read comments on my blog-- scholastic-scribe.blogspot.com -- btw. I also reply to comments if it looks like the person commenting expects a reply. And, if I ask a question in a comment, I always go back to that person's blog to see if they've replied.
-
I always try to respond to comments left on the blog, although sometimes it does take me a little while to get round to it.
At the same time, I don't expect blog owners to reply to comments I make, especially if what I've said isn't extending the debate they've started. For instance, if all I've said is something like "Thanks for the resource", I wouldn't expect them to thank me for the comment - it's redundant and just takes up everyone's time.
We all blog differently and so we'll all have slightly different approaches to comments; none are any more right than any others and I for one don't feel insulted or slighted if a blog owner doesn't reply to my comment.
On a side-note, I would join with ozegold in recommending the Subscribe to Comments and CommentLuv plug-ins for WordPress; very handy. Also Brian's Threaded Comments is a good plug-in for those bloggers who get lots of comments. -
I've just visited the Comment Luv site to see if it is available for blogger.
The developer made a post on April 7 saying that a plugin for Blogger may be on the way! Here is the link in case you wish to keep an eye on it!

I hope that helps.. -
not really. especially in blogger where the comments aren't arrange according to thread.

Gosh why even have a blog if you aren't going to respond to the comments? I just launched my blog about a month ago and have had about 15 comments per post to respond to at the most. I can do that in my sleep! Even if I had a thousand comments every time I wrote something I would still make a concerted effort to interact with my readers. I chose blogging exactly for this reason. If I write for a magazine or newspaper whatever I say just gets barfed out there and you have no idea how it affected someone, changed their life, or maybe you have no idea that they think you are a complete lucid freaking IDIOT but bad or good it all makes it that much more interesting...
-
I would reply to all comments if someone left me any (boo hoo)
blogorious.blogspot.com/ -
Definitely not, if someone comment just for the sake of commenting. then i guess blog owners should be talkative? so he/she would response to comments whole heartedly
-
I respond to all the comments on my blog. If they ask me a question I always reply in detail, and if something is important, I may even right a blog post about it.
If many comments are words of appreciation.. I reply to all of them in a single comment..
And yes, I do expect a reply to any comment that I make at any blog. I don't really mind no-replies to not-so-important comments that I make.. -
-
Seriously, I am just dyingggggg for comments or messages. And like a cheap blogger, I would reply to just about anything!
-
I look forward to replies... it's good to know you are building relationship, you know... and i always interact with my readers... though ssometimes im pretty occupied with my work and personal activities. :-)
-
Well I think I know why Windmillofmymind doesn't get many comments. Its bacause of the comment box, it asks for an email and doesn't say that it will not be shown when commenting. I try not to splash my email address everywhere because the spam filter can't cope, LOL!
However, you are right, a bloggers compendium would be an excellent idea. -
I find that people who take the time to comment often become regular visitors, and some even become evangelists for my site, bookmarking it and telling others.
To make it easier, I use the plugins that I mentioned above, and am now in the process of trying to speed up load times etc. by resizing images and removing anything that slows it down.
On the other hand, if I go to a blog that takes a long time to load, or has multiple pop up windows, and/or doesn't appear to hide my email address, I just click away. -
I always respond to all of my comments. It does take some time but it's worth it. I'm disappointed when a blogger doesn't respond to my comments so I imagine others would be.
On a somewhat related topic, I have had a regular commentator not receiving the follow up emails. Using a plugin with Wordpress. She's subscribed to about 30 posts, we've checked spam, I've checked forums for tips. Can't figure out an answer. I'd hate to reinstall the plugin because I have a lot of subscribers I don't want to drop. Any ideas? And as a side note, I've been forwarding my responses to her manually, which she thought was above the call of duty. Responding may not matter to some people, but it may matter to that "one" person who will come back again and again. You don't want to not find your "one" or "two" or "three" persons by not responding to comments. -
I do not personally expect site or blog owner to reply back the comments. Respect should be there and freedom to reciprocate should be respected too.
We comment to make a point for that particular topic to share ideas or informations. Thus replying back to comment is not a necessary protocol.
This removes the constraint to comment and reply procedure. Be happy and comment. -
I attempt to reply back to every single person who is kind enough to post a comment to a post I've written. That doesn't make other who do not comment back wrong, however. Please don't get me wrong. That's just me. Of course, some fall into the cracks as I am only one person...and others...well...I've learned the hard way...need to be ignored.
-
I appreciate every comment that I get. I try to reply to most of them because the commenting section is where you can get some vital info and have great discussions. Hey, never underestimate commenting like I said www.datmoney.com/2008/03/never-underestimate-commenting.html
-
Yes Yes Yes, especially when I ask a question, also I find it can keep a dialog going concerning the post

These few days, I feel I've made a few friends... Those who comment quite regularly on my blog. They are : knittingdragonflies.blogspot.com/ and www.skyewolfwrittenworks.com/. And now I want to leave a few extra comments in their blog as well. Or just visit more often, if I don't have anything to say.
