As more and more people join the blogging community, I find so many are becoming so full of ads.
Have people given way to money over quality?

Hi all,
I hope not, I think many are lured into blogging by stories in the news how this blogger makes this many 1,000's of dollars and they start off that way, usually they give up or start to blog for real.
I've seen some excellent blogs here and I think it's a learning process for all of us, the ones that take criticism usually end up with a better blog with a more balanced layout even with ads.
Good point though, I think the ones with tons of ads are just starting out, hopefully they will get tips and advice and end up with better blogs, like I did, and all the advice I got was from here, thanks guys/girls.

Tony, I agree with you. I actually put my blogs up for review and got some very good feedback, some of which had me alter my layouts and even font size. I guess like at school, I like to give a good presentation. I strive for quality content. Sometimes though on my personal blog, I am just writing what is going on in my everyday life. Though boring to me, those that read always give me good feedback and comments.
Here is to quality blogging,..with or without ads

I would say "less personal blog" more "commercial blog". In fact Commercial blog might be more quality than personal blog in term of niche content.
I personally hate advertising too much. So when u visit my blog you would expect less of those ads, more of text.
Cheers,
Binh-
Cheers Binh. Everyone wants to blog about blogging. Which is cool I guess. The problem is after awhile they all look the same. Most folks just take what other folks write and start their own "I know how to get you rich type of blog."
My personal blog is just that personal. I don't do it for money. I do it because I love writing and sharing a part of myself.

I don't think so--I think that there are more quality blogs now than ever. There are just a lot more bad ones, too, and so you have to work a little harder to find the good ones in the sea of splogs.

I decided to limit the number of ads on my blog, I only have two google ad boxes. As for whether or not I have a quality blog, that really gets determined by feedback, and only one person has left a rating on my profile page here in BC. I would like to read some more feedback as it helps to write better quality posts. Although while I check my stats using google analytics, I've noticed that recently my ratio of new vs returning visitors is becoming lopsided as there are mor returning visitors than new visitors. Maybe I do have a quality blog, you decide!

I think the problem is that so many blogs aren't personal expression--they're about making money. There may be the occasional personal post, but a lot of blogs are writing promotional reviews of web sites for pay, huge banner ads flashing in your eye, and a dozen other ways to make money. True personal blogs fall on the quality side of this question, to me.

Depends what you looking for and if the blog lives up to its promise! Advertisers have approached us but so far we've resisted and just stick to sending flowers anywhere in the world!
Blogs are easy to start for 3-6 months but its hanging in suring the low periods that keeps them alive and builds them...
Group hug? -
I treated my blog as my shop. Selling my photography services. It is important to have a lot of people to visit and notify and affirm my works. But it is still not the main point of having this blog. Quality or not a blog is not only define and determine by the design, layout, content or even traffic ... is is a relationship between the blog and you (the author). All you need is ... care her, introduce her to other and bring others to her too. Feed her, dress her up and on and off kiss, hug and care her. Bear in mind - dont push her so hard to others when she is not ready to meet others. You might not know she also need time to grow. HA HA too dramatic...

John Chow is a very good example of too many ads. I really think people saw his site and think making money on the Web would be so easy. I love having readers and I love getting feedback. It is the only way I know I am doing the right thing. I do have ads on my site, but I try to post about the things that piss me off. I think that people think one way but are too "shy?" about mouthing off.

What's odd is that this discussion was originally posted the day I started blogging (11/19/07). Perhaps I was an answer to the predicament described.
"Behold, and the good people shall haveth a thoroughbred horse racing blog of divine wisdom."
And of course the good people did then feast upon sleuths, and orangutans...... -
I can see where you're coming from, but I didn't just start blogging about 3 months ago and when you do first start out you have no clue about the best ad placement, the rules of blogging, etc.
I will say I started out blogging because people loved my opinion on different subjects I would write about and at first my blog was more personal...but in turn I decided I wanted to do more with it and make it a little more professional. So I now set my blog up as a Women's Blogozine (coined the term, lol). There are ads up but I don't place anything on my blog that I don't think will benefit my readership and I do try to make sure that my ads aren't intrusive.
Anyway overall I'm still learning and still improving over time, so hopefully the others will learn and improve over time.

Quality blogs will rise or fall to the level that the majority of readers would like to see and appreciate. Why is it that magazines often have trashy articles? Why are there mobs of photographers following celebrities when they go into a store?
Many readers don't have time to get into the substance of a blog. Some do and we appreciate them a lot. But I doubt they are the majority.
So I wouldn't necessarily put it on bloggers. The readers get to share some too. -
It depends on the purpose of your blog as to whether ads can help or hinder it.
For example, all the blogs I have with ads (as not all do have them) are niche blogs rather than random thoughts about anything.
So the ads and book store are very content specific and totally in accordance with the blog. So as the reader came to my site searching for a particular type of information, it may be the case that if not found on my site it can be found via one of those ads.
Take for example my dream site. www.dreamsanalysed.blogspot.com
It has ads that relate to dream dictionary sites.
My X-Posed blog www.girltalk-ladiesonly.blogspot.com has ads which relate to relationship dilemma's.
My writers site www.writersadvice.blogspot.com has Ads that advise on SEO etc.
But my random thoughts sites which are more personal to me carry no ads as they'd be very random and of little help to the reader. I also don't promote them, they are just 'found'.
There is no need to recruit readers if you only write for pleasure. Writing to inform and share information is slightly different, as it requires (if serious) more effort to get the information out there. -
(Another November thread that I apparently missed the first time around.)
I wouldn't say quality blogs are dying, but it is inevitable that an exponential increase in numbers is going to involve a lot of crap too. This even happens on cable TV, which has fewer channels as well as content that people actually pay for. -
You just have to find the good blogs which is hard since those don't shout out too much. Most blogger tools which were intended to help you find quality blogs end up being spammed by the junk blogs who for some reason always seem to get massive amounts of traffic, yet not a single comment. I wonder what the read-rate is of those blogs.
BlogCatalog is one of the best ways to find good blogs, but you have to look for them yourself. Search the directory and you'll find something you'll like. -
I must admit that my greatest frustration with blogging is the notion that I have written something very good or taken a picture that is good (and I'm not saying they are objectively good but that I feel this way)and they just sit there. Then maybe five or ten readers will look at them. Nobody comments about them. And then they gradually go towards the back of the blog.
People are possibley most interested in blogs that help them do something. I'm not sure many of us have time for aesthetics or interesting writing. Even readers who are not bloggers seem more interested in particular subjects. Sports. Swimsuits. Electronics. Things like that.
It's a buyers market. I admire bloggers who can just enjoy it without getting any feedback. And I may become one of them if things keep going in the same direction. -
I personally don't mind what people do with their blogs anymore than I mind what people do with their scrap books or photo albums. If I don't like what I see I can elect to move on. I don't judge or condemn I just mind my own business.
It is also a matter of personal taste.I see some blogs which have a reputation as funny, some as informative yet to me what I see is dull or full of copyrighted material. But I don't comment, I just move on as is my perogative.
I really sometimes think people are just too wrapped up in what others are doing, almost to the point of obsession when what they need to do is their own thing without worrying about others who are not and never will be part of their life.
Be yourself and make no excuses or apologies for being so.
Meanwhile if I come across a blog it is accidental, requested or recommended. I generally don't make it my busines to plough through the blogs of others as there is enough quality information available in every other form without having to rely on blogs.
Blogs are not the be all and end all.
I know...blasphemy!!
And me blogging bonkers too!-
No, not blasphemny, at least to me. I agree with your comments creativefossil. What others do on blogs doesn't really impact me, and comments or not, I would still do my blogs because basically they are just another art form for me to play around with, use and enjoy. When the blogging era is over, I will apply my art to another format or venue.
I really don't get why people care or get so bothered with what others choose to do on their blogs anyway, nobody is forcing us to read them.

of corse they are dying, mine borned dead

took the google ads off my personal blog and have only little small icon for bookstores I like, but no pay per clicks.
Other blogs need to be redone that way also, but I will test this out.
Quality blogs are something that is slipping away because more of them are based on how to make money Even though some of the money blogs I really like.
looking to see what the author is doing and how the money making biz is goin for them is still good reading for me.
Some blog on the other hand have no good info but more ads than writing and that is just poop -
I think it is because people are tired, that is what happened to me and my blogging crew. We just became tired of keeping up with posting and the latest. We are trying to get it together though.
