I was interested by TTs thread www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/its-no-great-sacrifice-to-protect-the-env... and it made me think

I know I don't and I have to wash them by hand

  5. dbowles1017
    Does my mom count?

I have never in my life had a dishwasher. I don't see what the big deal is, it takes maybe 10 minutes max to wash them.
  6. jflower36
Less water is used with a dishwater than washing by hand...so go for a washing machine.
  7. Friday13

"it takes maybe 10 minutes max to wash them"

yeah right, not in my house!!! 4 kids, 2 adults and lots of times an extra body or two, try dishes after Sunday dinner at our house
    1. dbowles1017
sounds like my childhood. I'll bump it up to 15 minutes.
    2. siralmo
well hang on how much do you have to wash??

      6 plates
      6 forks
      6 knives
      6 glasses
      a pot or pan?
    3. timethief
It took me 25 minutes to wash the dishes and pots and pans accumulated in one day by 2 people. My husband it the cook. He's a great cook but he uses so many dishes and utensils and pieces of cutlery that I have to remind myself not to whine lest be expected to cook.
    4. siralmo
i think you guys are just out of practice ... unless you are including drying time
    5. timethief
Yes, I include drying time and cleaning up the whole kitchen, stove and fridge and all counters and sweeping the floor too. I only wash dishes once daily but we pre-rinse them all immediately after we eat.
    6. siralmo
in that case how many meals do you eat at home?
    7. timethief
All of them. We rarely eat out.
    8. siralmo
that might be why it take 25 min
  10. HollytheHousewife
i sure wish I could get ahold of someone! b4 hubby says lights out
    1. siralmo
cause thats not random at all
    2. cookingasshole

  14. Arcticulates
I have a dishwasher now... and I am not about to give it up.. I have hand washed dishes for a family of 10 and 12 most of my life and I don't have very many luxuries other then this computer... so the dishwasher stays!!
  15. flamingpoodle
    No, I'm not married.
  16. BetsyIckes
Yes And the electronic panel board needs fixed! Dang!
  17. Alcomum
    oh yes indeed
  18. footiam
The people here don't use a dishwasher. I don't think they sell it in the shop too and that's a shame!
  19. xmarks
My wife does. Its called a husband.
  20. exit2013
No dishwasher...just hot water and strong hands for me. I've broken many a plate or two. Lol!
  21. SweetViolet
    Yes. Her name is Thandiswa.
  22. Kowgirl
Everyone has a dishwasher whether it be human or an appliance.
;-) I have an appliance dishwasher but I sometimes have to clean my pots and pans with my hands. The expensive ones say not to put in dishwasher or it will dry up the no stick coating on them. So much for technology. Maybe in the future we will have throw-away pots and pans like we do with paper plates, plastic cups and tableware. Why not, some of the foods we buy now are in these type of paper cookware. Or in bags that can be used as steamers. I use them a lot. No dishes, pots or pans to wash.
  23. jafabrit
I never had one until I came to the USA and while I find it convenient, I don't feel it's an essential part of my kitchen.
  24. chrissymarie321
It is an essential part of my kitchen, it has taken me 28 years...............where is Articulates, she understands
    1. Arcticulates
Don't worry... I got your back Chrissymarie321 lol!
  25. Jeunelle
Yes I have one but I only use it about 2 times per week.
The rest is handwash cause the lighter stuff is quicker, easier and faster to finish,
plus uses less electricity and my home is ALL electric. (got to save on them electric bills)
  26. iyaayasmoderator
I have a dishwasher, and I have someone who washes the dishes, she'll be 13 in a few weeks. Wonder if the allowance has to go up now.
    1. Floormodel
      I think they do
  27. Floormodel
why do you think I had kids?

I do have a dishwasher now but I like washing dishes so I do them by hand unless we're using a lot or it's a holiday.
  28. sarahalisonstargir
i havea dishwasher. his name is colten.
  29. MidwestMom
I have a dishwasher (the appliance) as washing dishes is the most hateful form of drudgery.

I would rather wash 10 loads of laundry than do dishes.
I would rather clean 5 bathrooms than do dishes.
I would rather vacuum my entire house than do dishes.

... but honestly, I would rather play with my children after supper than do dishes -- and that's the truth.
    1. legbamel
Ditto for me. We only run it once a week, and I wash normally wash pots and pans by hand unless we're about to run a load anyway. But by the time I fill the sink (we have terrible water pressure in the kitchen) and get everything washed, rinsed, dried, and put away it's been the better part of an hour. Between cooking, dishes, and homework I would get almost no fun time with my kids before bedtime. Screw that!
  30. mashlidesign
Who can live without one? I don't remember the last time I washed my own dishes
  31. intarso
I don't, and I find them to be a colossal waste of water. I always find caked on bits of crap on dishes that have been washed in dishwashers.

I'm not a big fan of caked on crap, and I rather enjoy washing dishes.
  32. satijournal
I thought only the most destitute of the most impoverished nations didn't have dishwashers. Hmmmmm.... Makes you wonder how some people survive.
  33. polybore
Polybore has a dish washer. The main advantage of the dish washer, and it is a biggie, is the temperature of the water it can use ie 65 degrees Celsius. This temperature is significant because it is sufficient to kill all food related bacteria.

It is difficult to achieve this kind of cleaning by hand washing because human hands cannot tolerate water temperatures of 65C. However it is possible if you use the two sink method (one soapy sink one sink very hot water) but awkward and potentially painful.

One way to cut the energy consumption of your dish washer is to attach it to your domestic hot water supply rather than to the cold supply (check that your dishwasher manual to make sure it can do this). In this way the dish washer does not have to heat the water from cold to get to 65C thus saving energy. This also will extend the life of the washer as the element does not need to do so much work.

The typical hot water supply runs at about 55C so the dishwasher just needs to heat the water by 10C rather than about 45C (or more) from cold.

    Eh=c_pmΔT

    Where Eh= energy Joules
c_p= the specific latent heat capacity in this case of water
    m= mass
    ΔT= change in temperature.

Whoa OTT! Polybore has actually managed to bore themselves here.

I have and I hate it.
That's what my kids are for.

Every time I hear that thing running I see $$ running out my front door.
  35. lnclark1950
