I was interested by TTs thread www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/its-no-great-sacrifice-to-protect-the-env... and it made me think
How many people have a dishwasher?
I know I don't and I have to wash them by hand

"it takes maybe 10 minutes max to wash them"

Everyone has a dishwasher whether it be human or an appliance.
;-) I have an appliance dishwasher but I sometimes have to clean my pots and pans with my hands. The expensive ones say not to put in dishwasher or it will dry up the no stick coating on them. So much for technology. Maybe in the future we will have throw-away pots and pans like we do with paper plates,plastic cups and tableware. Why not, some of the foods we buy now are in these type of paper cookware. Or in bags that can be used as steamers. I use them a lot. No dishes, pots or pans to wash. -
It is an essential part of my kitchen, it has taken me 28 years...............where is Articulates, she understands

I have a dishwasher, and I have someone who washes the dishes, she'll be 13 in a few weeks. Wonder if the allowance has to go up now.

I have a dishwasher (the appliance) as washing dishes is the most hateful form of drudgery.
I would rather wash 10 loads of laundry than do dishes.
I would rather clean 5 bathrooms than do dishes.
I would rather vacuum my entire house than do dishes.
... but honestly, I would rather play with my children after supper than do dishes -- and that's the truth.

Ditto for me. We only run it once a week, and I wash normally wash pots and pans by hand unless we're about to run a load anyway. But by the time I fill the sink (we have terrible water pressure in the kitchen) and get everything washed, rinsed, dried, and put away it's been the better part of an hour. Between cooking, dishes, and homework I would get almost no fun time with my kids before bedtime. Screw that!

Polybore has a dish washer. The main advantage of the dish washer, and it is a biggie, is the temperature of the water it can use ie 65 degrees Celsius. This temperature is significant because it is sufficient to kill all food related bacteria.
It is difficult to achieve this kind of cleaning by hand washing because human hands cannot tolerate water temperatures of 65C. However it is possible if you use the two sink method (one soapy sink one sink very hot water) but awkward and potentially painful.
One way to cut the energy consumption of your dish washer is to attach it to your domestic hot water supply rather than to the cold supply (check that your dishwasher manual to make sure it can do this). In this way the dish washer does not have to heat the water from cold to get to 65C thus saving energy. This also will extend the life of the washer as the element does not need to do so much work.
The typical hot water supply runs at about 55C so the dishwasher just needs to heat the water by 10C rather than about 45C (or more) from cold.
Eh=c_pmΔT
Where Eh= energy Joules
c_p= the specific latent heat capacity in this case of water
m= mass
ΔT= change in temperature.
Whoa OTT! Polybore has actually managed to bore themselves here.
