Do you have a remedy or product you turn to when you have something needs a fixing, either physically or around the home?

I use all kinds of stuff - mainly duct tape and baking soda, though

Oh, and cloreseptic throat spray will help you rid your tub of hard water stains.

Ok, what do you use baking soda for?

And the throat spray thing... does that really work? WOW!

Mine secret fix-all product is JB Weld. If you don't know what it is, it's basically a cold weld product. I've used to fix transmissions, motorcycle fairings, gears, broken vases, household appliances, etc. etc. Whenever something is broken, I just weld it together.

doesn't super glue also do that? Bringing the parts toghter of course (transmissions, motorcycle fairings, gears, i wouldn't use super glue for these materials of course!)
    2. trailofpen
JB Weld is like super glue X1000000.

LOVE that stuff! Its worth was proven when my aunt wanted a screen door on her Phoenix apartment. The building was cinder block, and the landlord said it could not be done. He actually *bet* me it could not be done.

A masonry drill, some JB Weld and 45 minutes work ...and Aunt Norma became the only resident with a screen door. Twenty five years later, it is *still* the only screen door on the apartment complex. Gotta love it.

That's awesome. I've seen people JB Weld custom car headers together instead of real welds, some crazy stuff.

Rubbing alcohol. Usually does a lot!

Yes vinegar is an awesome thing. Just wrote about it on my blog a few days ago and it's my most recent post: www.funkkeejooce.com/blog/

White vinegar is good for a bunch of things, from deodorizing pet accidents to taking the sting out of a sunburn. I wrote a post about it here: cheaptricksntips.blogspot.com/2007/12/saving-money-12-practical-uses-for-on...

Baking soda is another wonderfully versatile product: cheaptricksntips.blogspot.com/2007/12/saving-more-money-25-cheap-tricks-wit...

For a stomach problem, PeptoBismol seems to fix everything from rummy tummy to liquid exhaust. So much so that, when the stash that I brought from the US was finally depleted, Hubby found a website that will import stuff for you, and ordered four bottles to be sourced and delivered to us here in South Africa!

Wow, that's a great post about baking soda. I once blew up a microwave with a hot pocket in a crisper sleeve that filled the whole house with smoke (There was literally black smoke pouring out of the house which made it look like it was on fire). Baking soda was the only thing that could take away the burnt smell.
    2. SweetViolet
yah, it's very good for deodorizing! When I had cats I used to mix it with the cat litter, and I still keep a box of it in the fridge!

Cranberry Vodka and Orange Juice, and a phone book to call a handyman

      Funny :]

Nail file -- I never leave home without it. It can be a pry bar or screwdriver or defensive weapon. It can even get you out of jail (esp. if you use it as a defensive weapon.)

Plus, it keeps my nails looking nice.
    1. trailofpen
Oh wow. I'm going to have to watch out for women with nail files now. Reminds me of this movie where this girl stabbed a guys eye with her high heel. Dangerous.

I might think about keeping one handy though, incase I have to pull a MacGuyver.
    2. MidwestMom
In that case, wrigley's chewing gum, a lighter, and a pack of dental floss might also come in handy.

      Because you just never know...
    3. trailofpen
      Lol, true, true.

Duct tape fixes any and all problems
    1. trailofpen
I'm going to have to add that one to my toolbox.
    2. dbowles1017
It is required that you be near a roll of duct tape at all times. It should never take more than 5 minutes to find and return to the problematic area with duct tape.

I used to be a believer in this, until I started taking them every day. Then I just thought I was addicted.
    2. LolitaV
no, i take it once in a while when i cannot stand the pain. I hate meds and will usually let aches wear off.

    Medicinally speaking: Tincture of Myrrh

    Around the house: Oil Eater
    1. trailofpen
Wow, I've never heard of tincture of myrrh. I might have to try it out in the cold season.

Do you know if oil eater can absorb really old oil spills?
    2. Hayseed
Tincture of Myrrh: (backstory) My Dad was one of the great Swing Era musicians & arrangers. In 1922, his music teacher told him about Tincture of Myrrh to revive 'trumpeter's lip.' Also told him about near-miraculous healing powers, including skin cancer. Yes, it's the same myrrh used in Biblical times.

      It tastes like licorice, and is made for abrasions & sores of the mouth as well as stomach disorders. Used to be able to get it at 'most any pharmacy until a few years ago when Cornell started doing studies on its healing powers. Now, only health food stores and such carry it. Can tell you one of many stories about it: Dad lost the tips of several fingers on right hand in shop accident. Poured Tincture of Myrrh on those fingers ..played trumpet gig that night; fingertips healed & nails grew back. He did dance around quite a bit with each application ...tincture refers to an alcohol base :}

Oil Eater: by Kafko. Can now buy it on Amazon, occasionally at auto parts stores and Costco. It's been part of our household for +/- 20 years and used at Dad's shop, on the crew's work clothes, kids clothes, the house & car, any greasy spills & stains. I spray it around cabinet spaces to keep out ants, spiders, mice and such. Like good ol' WD-40, it's non-toxic, non-corrosive and biodegradable. And yes, it does work on old stains.

    omg wrong... THREAD!

    Indifference.

Except for something medical ignoring the problem usually works.
    1. MidwestMom
      I'm ignoring that comment.

      (...hey! works great!)
    2. nothingprofound
You're learning, Midwest Mom. You're learning.

Glue sticks using my trusty glue gun.
    1. trailofpen
I used to have a hot glue gun and would glue things all the time. The only problem is, what do you do when it falls on something accidently like clothes?
    2. exit2013
      I have no idea.
  12. trailofpen
Another do-it-all product I use is laundry detergent. It's a great degreaser, floor cleaner, all purpose cleaner, and also a liquid/oil absorber. It's also great to have around when you are working on cars or machinery. Just put some in your hand, add a little water, and scrub oil and grease off your hands like magic. Better than Gojo.

Vinegar is a cure all. And suct tape. If you cant duct it F$%^ it.
    1. trailofpen
Omg, wow. I didn't know all of the uses for vinegar besides cooking, taking off hard water marks, and making mini volcanos with baking soda.

Btw, I'm writing down all these solutions. This is all very useful information.

Tea tree oil for all kinds of skin issues from acne to mosquito bites.
    1. SweetViolet
Oh yah! That stuff is great!

I got 2nd & 3rd degree burns on my hand a few years ago and the hospital treated my with a gauze impregnated with an aloe gel with tea tree oil in it. Healed up fine and didn't even leave any scars...also took a lot of the pain and inflammation out of it.

      Wonderful stuff!!

    Lots of garlic and ginger.

Jack Daniels on Poison Ivy (applied to not oral lol). I had an old man tell me this several years ago and it has been my trick every since. I even kept some with me while hiking on the Appalachian Trail this year for those little encounters with sumac.
    1. trailofpen
Um... is this for real? I'm kind of wary of such a combination.
  17. Arcticulates
Vicks Vapor Rub. Takes the itch out of mosquito bites instantly. Heals severely chapped lips overnight. Great skin moisturizer on freezing cold days. Repairs squeaky hinges on doors. Not to mention it's other well known uses, rubbing on chest and under nose to clear congestion. It is fantastic stuff. I keep it handy all the time.
