   I live on a beautiful forested Canadian island we are surrounded by gorgeous beaches. Unfortunately, the affluent and upwardly mobile, primarily Americans have purchased their "second homes" here and have driven housing prices up to the point where those who actually live here fulltime cannot find "first houses" to purchase for a reasonable price. Even the "modest beach cottages" are now priced over a half a million bucks. The cottage rentals are insanely priced and our local government has responded to their electorate by banning the use of residential homes for short term vacation (less than 30 days) rentals. Quite aside from that the negative imapcts of toursim on the island environment by far outweigh the money the tourists and rich folk bring into our community.

   Caye Caulker, Belize - I love it there. Caye Caulker is an island off Belize and is very laid back, the people are friendly and the beaches are quiet. Beaches houses are very resonable about $50 per night (3 night minimum), monthly rates are even better. The food is fabulous - Mestizo and Creole. Plus, English is spoken.

   St Simons Island, Georgia is a beautiful magical island with lots of vacation rental property available but be careful - once you go there, you may never want to leave!!!
