Our family is being hit with the flu this year -- hard.

Our doctor has confirmed that it's not H1N1 (fortunately), but this is the first time I can remember the kids getting so sick so quickly.

When I went to the store this weekend to get medicine for them, I found the shelves empty of ibuprophen, which tells me we're not alone.

I wonder: is your family struggling with the flu this year? Are your friends or relatives? Where do you live, and what are you doing to prevent or treat the flu?

It went through our house shortly after school started which is the norm I guess. It was just a minor case of the flu though, no biggie.

We've had the typical start-of-the-school-year viruses, too. But this is different and *much* worse.

It takes a lot to ground my crew, and this bug has them down for the count for days on end.

No not so far. We havent had the flu in over three years. The last time we had it hubby and I had it and had to go to the hospital for help. I am diabetic so if I get it I get really sick and end up in the hospital

That's a relief. I have a bloggy friend whose daughter is diabetic. She just posted about flu and H1N1 and her daughter's diabetes. She's opted to go for the vaccine. Do you think you will?

not this year. I have read t much that scares me on it. I dont go any where and my kids are home schooled. So I feel ok about not getting it this year.
    3. MidwestMom
That makes sense. Mine aren't homeschooled, so every germ that enters the classroom seems to make its way home to us.

I had the 'flu', the internet told me it was most likely H1N1, so I was given my tamiflu voucher.

As I am round sick people a lot, I took the tamiflu, was horrible first few days, but then it started too work.
    1. MidwestMom
Ah... you're a patient of Dr. Internet.

We've never taken Tamiflu. We're just keeping home and resting. (And I'm making lots and lots of soup.) My youngest ones have been the hardest hit -- this is truly wiping them out!

      I was indeed

They didn't want germy folk going to the doctors, so you either had to phone up or use this:

      www.pandemicflu.direct.gov.uk/

I couldn't see the mumborg in hospital unless I took the medication and waited for five days afterwards.

As long as you ate before taking the tamiflu, it was fine.
    3. MidwestMom
Actually, that makes a lot of sense.

I've been lucky that my Doctor's office has been willing to talk with me by telephone. Others aren't so lucky. One of my commenters' kids just got over H1N1, and they were told to get an appointment if they wanted medical advice. (I think here in the States, many doctors' offices are too busy.)

Diagnosing via internet avoids that whole issue. ... as long as you disinfect your keyboard afterward...

(And good for the mumborg's hospital! It's good to know they're protecting patients by keeping away the sniffling doodlers!)

Yeah it was nice and simple, also kept others from getting it

I will be taking the vaccine too, if I can.

The one and only time I got a flu shot, which was about 35 years ago, I got the flu. Since then, I've never had a flu shot or had the flu. I'm just lucky, I guess.

I hope your family is healthy and active very soon.
    1. MidwestMom
      Thanks.

We're not flu shot people, either. Or at least we haven't been. After this bout of illness, though, my mind may be changing.

you have got to be kidding me. those vids have nothing to do with reality. I have read many many many biology related books written by recognized incredibly intelligent doctors/scientists and anytime the topic of vaccines is mentioned, they agree that the science surrounding vaccine production is advancing and vaccines are getting better. Vaccines are perfectly safe today. Don't let pseudosciences, postmodernists, and/or extremists, convince you otherwise.

Here is Q & A from the Centers for Disease Control on H1N1 and flu vaccines. (To balance out the links a bit.)

      Sway,

Do you own pharmaceutical stocks? I have a hunch you haven't even watched the videos...

The first speaker is a neurosurgeon and professor of neurology (known also for having introduced innovative techniques in brain surgery). He points out most physicians have only summarily studied immunology, and have hardly delved into the subject of vaccines.

The second speaker is an infectious disease expert who is more worried about the effect of the vaccine than the swine flu itself... speaking from his own personal experience with patients. [he points out the level of mercury in vaccines is 2500 times higher than what is deemed acceptable in foods].

      @MM,
Thank you for posting the offical position of Rockefeller inspired Big Pharma
Srsly, what people should be looking to do is to boost their immune system...

Almost everyone around currently has it or has had it. So far I have been okay. Im wondering if I have an immunity. I didn't get the shot because I feel it would be irresponsible for me to get one when the vaccine is in such short supply and Im a healthy person who rarely gets sick.

I had it a couple of weeks ago. I don't think it was H1N1 but I did feel miserable for about a week. All better now, from the respiratory tract anyway.

I'm glad to hear you're feeling better.

It made its way through our house. Us parents did not get it but both my daughters got it. One came home from school with a fever and sure enough my other had a fever the next day. They didn't get hit as hard as some people have been tho. They had high fever that wouldn't go below 103 with meds and a cough. Towards the end they had runny noses. They were bad enough but nothing like the stories I have been hearing. I really only get sinus infections and that is it so I will not be getting the flu shot. Had one years ago and that was the only time I had any flu symptoms. I made it through my kids laying on me, coughing on me and all without getting it.
Was crazy though we were not allowed to leave the house and nobody was allowed in the house, the doctor was worried that I could carry it to somebody as I was not sick but exposed to it. It was hard to find children's advil when they got hit too! I had to alternate children's tylenol and ibuprofen every 4-6 hours for the fever and robitussin as needed for cough. Plenty of fluids and soup. Hope you guys feel better quickly!

      Thanks, Chicky.

I'm glad your family is through that rough patch. Mine seem like they're holding their own.

I made a big pot of home-made chicken soup yesterday, though. It may be an old-fashioned home remedy, but there's something about comfort food like soup that helps them feel better.
