Just wandering how many people personally know people serving overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan. I know less than 1% of the population has served, but wonder how that carrys over with those that serve in support of loved ones and family.

I don't know anyone personally, no.
This thread reminded me of a very sad blog I read earlier, though, by a military blogger who had written and saved in his drafts his 'last post' in anticipation of his possible death and someone on his blog posted it for him yesterday.
I apologize, I don't mean to threadjack, but here is the link if you are interested:

I did. My Dad just got back from Iraq in November.
A couple kids from my highschool have been over there, but none of my close friends.
Thanks for your service and be safe. -
It doesn't matter... contractor, soldier, teacher.... my hat's off to you lynyrd... Come back safe....

My "adopted" son is serving in Afghanistan. While we didn't literally adopt him, he is as close to me as a son can be. I have now "adopted" his entire brigade and recently created a blog to honor them. As soon as we receive approval from his chain of command regarding OPSEC regulations, I'll be posting their personal stories. Personally, I find this War on Terror to consume a large portion of my life. The worry and fear sometimes get the best of me, which is why I decided to blog about it. I will definitely be including a link to Andrew Olmsted's Final Post. That was one of the most beautiful things I have ever read. Thanks for sharing the link!

My boss's son just shipped out for Iraq the other day. Back home, I lived not far from Ft. Rucker, Alabama, a big army base for helicopter training, so a lot of my friends were from military families. Since highschool, at least six of my friends have been over in either Iraq or Afghanistan. I'm not sure if any of them are over there at the moment. I wouldn't be surprised.

It’s simple really, as you look at their name. Remember that they were born of a mother and father just like everyone else. That someone took pride in their first steps and words. As they were children once that they laughed and played. Did they have a favorite toy? Maybe a dog? Remember how they fell off their bike, or tripped and scrapped their knee? How they would wake when the story stopped. They just couldn’t seem to wait to get their first car, and sometimes even their first ticket. You see, you do Know them.
