Have you ever heard about Steampunk ?

Just until a few months ago I had never heard of that. It is currently one the most popular and one of fastest growing Movement. I have decided to add my own touch to this era with some creative handcrafted design that stands out of the crowd.

Steampunk is fiction. An era that should have been, I imagine a sophisticated world in wich technology and nature coexist in harmony. Everything is powered by steam and magic. It is a mix of ancient and modern.

Many movies are taking place in that era , The golden compass , The video game Myst and more ...

Let's talk about steampunk .

What do you know ?

The spider-like contraption in Will Smith's "Wild Wild West" is an example of Steampunk. My husband is a mechanical engineer and he just loves it! I also likes watches...I'm hoping to find a steampunk watch for him for Christmas.

    Cool stuff!

That thing was neat as hell, and I hate spiders! It looked like it could be real, and that is what steampunk is about, you know it couldn't and probably wouldn't work in reality, but it looks like it could! All that brass, wood, steam... nice.

OMG, I so want that keyboard. Do you suppose they made an ergonomic version that they're just dying to sell for cheap?
    2. CollettesTreasures
That is creative and beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
    3. TazFromOz
If by cheap you mean over a thousand dollars legbamel then yes, they'll sell you one =S.

Doesn't make them any less sexy though. I think I might have to keep an eye out for old typewriters and give this a go. First though I think I'll try and make a steampunk watch.

If you want to see some good virtual steampunk, join Second Life. There's an entire world there called Caledon that is based on Steampunk. Lot's of great things that should have been.

I'm definitely a steampunk fanatic. (I blame HG Wells for this) I used to call it "clockwork sci-fi"... then I learned earlier this year that there was an actual word for it. I wrote a very brief article about it in my blog a while back. Okay, well it was more like me gushing about the genre and what-not: www.tonyamoore.com/index.php?option=com_mojo&Itemid=93&p=15

Being a licensed steam engineer, I have a hard time seeing how steam and nature coexist in perfect harmony. Every environmentalist I've faced has looked upon me with suspicion because of the steam trade, with every evil attached from water pollution to global warming.

I'd like to see how this works. It would help the trade.
    1. mikodragonfly
...this is all fantasy. I don't actually believe that it's possible to build an elevator to the moon...or in a ramjet could time travel of it's slung 'round the sun fast enough. Steampunk is just a genre that imbues that romantic perception of certain types of fiction. It's being entertained and inspired by the improbable.

As far as actual steam engines go, I don't know much about that but I doubt it's the steam that's the problem. Wouldn't it be the by-product of whatever powers that kind of machinery that would be suspect, instead?

I too was introduced to steam punk within the last year, and think it's pretty darn cool... love "his dark materials", and oldschool speculative fiction, ...I think it can be overdone and is bound to be a fad/trend all too soon that will make it uber mainstream, but whatchagoinado? ... Appreciate all trends but those not done in earnest, but out of attempts to be cool, need to be followed in moderation. People on the cutting edge of trends like steam punk can go all out, but once everyone else falls in line, the coolness factor greatly dissipates.

As for the practicality of studying the what-ifs and has-beens of the industrial revolution, I think there is much we can learn from the looking at the mistakes and decisions that were made at the source, and imagine and attempt a reality that is parallel, and perhaps more healthy, and environmentally sound compared to this "reality" we live in.

I also have noticed a certain amount of sexism that accompanies steampunk ideals that romanticize certain aspects of victorian womanhood that should not be wished on anyone.

Steam is not the problem , it is toxic fumes , i didnt say fumepunk . What if the tinkerer at that time had already tough about how to control polution , what if the course of history had been changed by the wisdom of a mad scientist . This is what makes Steampunk fantastic , it is not just a trend but also a way for us to go back in time , yes it's possible to travel in time and use your imagination to view a different course of action , from my point of view it is where technology and nature coexist in harmony ,Where clean coal powered robots plant trees , where machine are magical wonders , very different from the reality of our world .

Check out my blog , im slowly but surely from time to time ...adding post about my imaginary world .
